First look at Grant Gustin as The Flash a.k.a. Barry Allen in CW's Arrow, plus a pilot update

11.19.2013

Grant Gustin will soon make his first appearance on CW's Arrow as Barry Allen a.k.a. The Flash in episode's 8 and 9 of the second season, but he's no longer going to be doing a "back-door pilot" as was originally planned. In addition to these first photos of Gustin as the speedy superhero (see below) in his alter ego of Barry Allen, we also have word that rather than introduce a fully-costumed Flash in episode 20 of Arrow, producers will instead create a stand-alone pilot for the character. The reason for this shift is both for budget and reception, according to Deadline:

Filming a stand-alone Flash pilot would allow the creators to better flesh out the superhero’s story and his world on a bigger budget, as pilot budgets are significantly higher than episodic ones. While no longer a full-blown spinoff, The Flash still will be tethered to the Arrow universe since the the character (as Barry Allen) will first be introduced there.

Here's the character synopsis for Barry Allen on Arrow:

Barry Allen (Gustin) is a Central City assistant police forensics investigator who arrives in Starling to look into a series of unexplained robberies that may have a connection to a tragedy in his past.

There's been a lot of rumbling about a feature film version of THE FLASH as well, but it's mostly just that: rumbling. Rumors range from high to low in that department, with his possible introduction in BATMAN VS SUPERMAN to the potential of Gustin portraying the character on the big and small screen have floundered about the interwebs, but nothing is confirmed in that department. For now, it seems that the small screen Flash is the only thing on the race track.

CW's Arrow is on Wednesdays at 8/7c.

are these pictures spoilers?

anyone else notice that Quentin Lance is standing there with Oliver, Diggle, and Felicity? does he know who Arrow is by the time this episode comes around? just seems weird he's there with the whole team looking into something.

Diggle and Felicity work for Oliver at Queen Consolidated too, so no.

Looking forward to it. Arrow has turned out to be really enjoyable and I'm glad they're mining the comics for supporting characters in addition to giving us original ones. Sure, it has a tinge of that soap opera feel now and again, but for a DC fan, seeing a live-action Deathstroke is a thrill that's hard to match! Also, the Birds of Prey being based in the Clocktower...the ship being named the Amazo...so much squee. Looking forward to the Flash and I hope it will be as good, if not better.

I think he looks lean enough, like he has a runner's build.

Arrow season two is just brilliant...with each episode, talk about upping the ante! I try to stay away from the reports as I want to go in to each episode fresh but SPOILER ALERT for those that have not seen the recent episode, Amanda Waller showing up was great. F**k, they're introducing so many subplots; I have no clue where this season is heading. They’re definitely got a long term plan in place. WB's seem to be making a pig's mess of the DC cinematic universe, but in Arrow, they're

WB's seem to be making a pig's mess of the DC cinematic universe, but in Arrow, they're doing everything so well. I'm not sure how Barry Allen’s inclusion will go but it seems he won't have his powers during any of the episodes and given the brilliant way Canary's sonic scream was handled, I have every confidence in them doing it well. Agents of Shield should be taking notes :o) The recent mind your surroundings reference still brings a smirk to my face and is miles better than any reference Shield has had so far (though the Fury appearance in Shield will take some beating). I've seen three incarnations of Arrow now - Justice League Unlimited, Smallville (he was the best thing in it) and this - never read an Arrow comic in my life - but the character has been done very well each time – interesting that he’s only a B list hero.

Is it just me or does this guy look vaguely like Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker?

Especially in that first picture.

Seeing as The Flash, and Nightwing I believe, is being introduced in Arrow, wouldn't it make sense for Warners to use Grant Gustin and whoever in future Superman/Batman films?
Arrow is popular with non comic fans right? so there's that dilemma of introducing characters to Superman/Batman solved.

(or am I not seeing the forest for the trees?)

Where did you hear they are introducing Nightwing on Arrow? I thought they were doing that through Superman/Batman. However, Nightwing could make for a decent tv show - that would be a better spinoff from Arrow than The Flash. That way they can capitalize on the Batman element for TV and leave the door open for a big screen treatment for Flash.

There is no way in hell I want to see Gustin as The Flash in the future [link] League films. For television, it's fine i guess, but I want a man playing The Flash and not some person who looks like a teenager.

I'm excited to see The Flash, but I just wish they had casted better for the role. I can't wait though to finally see the character in action. And hopefully he won't screw up the perfect dynamic they have on that show.

As for the big feature film, I just got done watching Man of Steel again and I can't wait to see how Snyder and co. bring all the characters together for Justice League. I'm still hoping Bradley Cooper, Chris Pine, John Krasinski, or Charlie Hunnam gets to play The Flash.
