First look at Ryan Gosling in Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives

03.01.2012

I think it's safe to say: "THE ARTIST can go f*ck itself." Myself and the vast majority of you felt the primo film of 2011 was easily Nicolas Winding Refn's DRIVE, which featured a dynamite performance from one of our very best young actors Ryan Gosling. So when we heard that the two would be re-teaming for a film called ONLY GOD FORGIVES, we film fans collectively splooged.

And now thanks to Wild Bunch, an international distributor attached to Refn's film, the first image of Gosling's cop killer 'Julian' has appeared online which you can peep below. The indie thriller is reportedly more violent than DRIVE, said to even feature sword fights and shit. GIMME NOW.

ONLY GOD FORGIVES began filming early this year, though there is no official word on a release date as of yet.

Synopsis: Bangkok. Ten years ago Julian (Ryan Gosling) killed a cop and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty. When Julianís brother murders a prostitute the police call on retired cop Chang - the Angel of Vengeance. Chang allows the father to kill his daughterís murderer, then Ďrestores orderí by chopping off the manís right hand. Julianís mother Jenna (Kristen Scott Thomas) - the head of a powerful criminal organization - arrives in Bangkok to collect her sonís body. She dispatches Julian to find his killers and Ďraise hellí. Increasingly obsessed with the Angel of Vengeance, Julian challenges him to a boxing match, hoping that by defeating him he might find spiritual releaseÖ but Chang triumphs. A furious Jenna plots revenge and the stage is set for a bloody journey through betrayal and vengeance towards a final confrontation and the possibility of redemption.

Look forward to this

Cue lots of scenes with Gosling not saying much and scratching his face with a slight smirk on his face...

The concept sounds awesome

Although despite his talent I'll be outspoken and say I can't stand Gosling. Never could. He has the face of an annoying friend from college and I just want to punch him in it. Either way I'll still see it.

P.S. I'm finally gonna rent Drive this weekend to see what all the hub bub is about.

P.P.S. I though Bronson was Winding Refn's best movie...

You have not even seen Drive yet, so your comparisons and judgements are biased. Ryan Gosling blew me away in Drive, so maybe your view of him will change.

I've accepted the fact that Drive didn't get nominated in that categories that it deserved but in my mind, it was the best of 2011. I'm certainly looking forward to this collaberation between Refn and Gosling. Maybe this will be their shot at redemption at next year's Oscars. It looks fucking mean already.

Sheesh

Thank you, SYNOPSIS, for giving away the whole f'ing movie! The thing read like a friggin' Blu-Ray director's commentary.

Why exactly was it necessary to bring up The Artist in this piece? That sort of bias and negativity is what gives internet writers a bad name. Just talk about the actual topic at hand.

Yeah I certainly don't think The Artist was as good as Drive, but it was a beautiful movie.

"your typical run from your computer at home blog site either. stop hatin'" I don't know what the first sentence even means, and how can you support hating a film while asking someone against that kind of biased to "stop hatin'" Are you THAT desperate to use that stupid phrase?

Man is that first line classy.

It's great to know site writers will embrace the kind of polarized bullshit you hear from middle schoolers.

Sounds exciting and different. Which is what I was hoping for. Will be interesting to see Kristen Scott Thomas as a crime lord.

And I would never tell "The Artist" to go fuck itself.

Drive was definitely snubbed in many ways but I don't agree with the hating on The Artist which was great.

Anyway, this sounds interesting and I can't wait to see a trailer.
