First look at Spielberg's War Horse, lots of horse, no war

We’ve been covering Steven Spielberg’s next effort WAR HORSE for a while now, but we haven’t had a whole lot to talk about.

Now the first official images from the film have been released and…well there’s still not a lot to talk about.

The film is based on a best selling book which became a well reviewed play, and though there aren’t any aliens involved, I'm sure Spielberg’s version of it will be pretty quality.

It’s the story of a young boy who bonds with a horse, but then it’s sent off the fight in World War I as part of the cavalry (we were still using horses for war then? Yikes). He can’t forget his friend, so he sets off to find him.

Check out the horse bonding above and below.

Extra Tidbit: I always wondered how they filmed horses falling down in movies without accidentally breaking their legs. Anyone know?

Interesting

Spielberg's a genius, so anything he does is gold. Actually, scratch that, "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" was not very good, but other than that, the man's a cinematic genius. This movie should be good since it's helmed by Spielberg.

I don't know anything about this movie but based on the pics I'm already digging the visual look. Just have to wait for a trailer now.

Extra Tidbit ...

What MSGelter said below works pretty well and a lot of times in newer films will either use the "falling horse" method or the choose to use models of horses for the close-ups.

But back in the day when animal rights weren't as paramount as getting a good shot they used a device called a "Running W", created by legendary stuntman/actor Yakima Canutt, that used wires attached to the ground and the front of the horse to stop a horse immediately at full gallop. It has since been deemed inhumane,

It has since been deemed inhumane, although it didn't necessarily injure the horse it did shake them up quite a bit.

As far as WAR HORSE I am pretty stoked. I love a good WWI flick (There are so few good ones) and any excuse to see one is a good excuse for me. Spielberg rarely disappoints so I can't wait to see how it turns out!

..."a well reviewed play." Wow that's an understatement.

You come up with that yourself...?

Horses falling down . . .

. . . is actually quite easy. When I was a young lad, I was part of a Civil War re-enactment outfit (cavalry), and you simply train the horse to go down with the right kind of pull on the reins. Horses can easily go down on their "knees", and they will hit the knee before "collapsing". Watch footage in slo-mo, and you'll see what I mean.
