First look at Steven Spielberg's Terra Nova

01.07.2011

I was beginning to wonder if Steven Spielberg's Terra Nova would ever actually make it to TV, but these first photos from the show seem to indicate it's moving along in some form or another, despite previous production problems.

The show focuses on a group of humans who travel back in time to avoid their dystopian future, and end up co-habitating with dinosaurs 150 million years ago (or 6,000, depending on your religious views). Terra Nova stars Jason O'Mara of Life on Mars and recently picked up AVATAR's Stephen Lang as the "charismatic and ruthless leader of the Terra Nova settlement." Sound familiar?

Check out the sadly dinosaur-less photos from the show below, and enjoy an incredibly lengthy synopsis below that. Does this show really have the budget to render a prehistoric landscape and CGI dinosaurs convincingly? I have my doubts.

Extended synopsis from press release:

In the year 2149 the world is dying. The planet is overdeveloped, overcrowded and overpolluted. With the majority of plant and animal life extinct, devotion to science has brought mankind to the brink of destruction, but has also provided its only hope for salvation. Knowing there is no way to reverse the damage to the planet, a coalition of scientists has managed to open up a fracture in the space-time continuum, creating a portal to prehistoric Earth. This doorway leads to an amazing world, one that allows for a last-ditch effort to save the human race … possibly changing the future by correcting the mistakes of the past.

The series centers on the Shannon family as they join the tenth pilgrimage of settlers to TERRA NOVA, the first colony of humans in this second chance for civilization. JIM SHANNON, a devoted father with a checkered past, guides his family through this new land of limitless beauty, mystery and terror. Jim’s wife, ELISABETH SHANNON, is a trauma surgeon chosen through a global lottery as a new addition to Terra Nova’s medical team. JOSH SHANNON is their son, mourning the girl he left behind, as he’s torn between two role models – his father and the charismatic COMMANDER FRANK TAYLOR, the leader of the settlement, and the heroic first pioneer through the time portal. MADDY SHANNON, Jim and Elizabeth’s teen daughter, is as independent and adventurous as her parents, but her distrust of authority soon leads her on a dangerous path.

In addition to blue skies, rolling rivers and lush vegetation, TERRA NOVA offers new opportunities and fresh beginnings to its recent arrivals, but the Shannons have brought with them a familial secret that may threaten their citizenship in this utopia. Additionally these adventurers soon discover that this healthy, vibrant world is not as idyllic as it initially appears. The areas surrounding Terra Nova are filled with dangerous dinosaurs, and other prehistoric threats, as well as external forces that may be intent on destroying this new world before it begins.

But perhaps even more threatening than what lies outside the protective walls is the Shannons’ realization that something sinister may be happening inside TERRA NOVA as not everyone on this mission has the same intentions of how best to save mankind.

Extra Tidbit: This is on Fox, so if it turns out to be supremely awesome, expect it to be canceled immediately.

They better save their ammo cause if their stuck in the past their gonna run out! I bet what happens is they get to the past and begin to correct mistakes, then get lazy and say screw it we'll just live here and let everyone in the future die! Cool idea though. Guess we will see.

This sound more and more like EARTH 2, one of Spielberg's previous attempt to do TV Sci-Fi (to the cast, with an actor usually used as a bag guy as one of the heroes), and we know how it ended (a great show canceled after one season). And having humans in dino time... Did Steven forgot about time paradoxes (Back To The Future) en dino/human relationships (Jurassic Park) ? What movie's tagline was "change the past, destroy the future" already ?

Oh boy....

...if this plot is not a recipe for cancellation, I don't know what it is. My prediction: Two seasons. At best.

If your going to travel back in time to save mankind it's probably a better idea to travel back AFTER a giant asteroid is destined to strike the earth destroying all life on it.

Haha, true. However they go back 150 million
years. The meteor hit earth about 65 million years ago. Thats 85 million years later. By that time humanity, if not extinct, surely will have left this planet and this solar-system. ;)

So they go back in time and to the dinosaurs' time and then shoot them all up? Man, our future is going to be filled with a bunch of dicks!

BITCH BITCH MOAN MOAN

As if it didn't look enough like Avatar already they had to add Stepehen Lang. This looks and sounds big and stupid. I know movies are migrating to TV but it looks like they're taking their bulky "Epic" baggage with them. This just seems to flashy and i'm wondering if a trailer could prove it has any depth.

Also my initial excitement at seeing someone from Life in Mars in this disappeared when i realised it was the american version. GAH.

abcdehacademy, you're insult shows a lack of reading comprehension. Read Jmontilla's post again. After one season, Fringe got moved to a different time slot where it got slaughtered by it's competition. Which resulted in it's third season being thrown into the Friday night death slot.

abcdehacademy, I don't even watch Fringe. I saw the first two episodes and lost interest. But be glad you got at least 3 seasons. I'm a Whedon fan and I lost Firefly after only a partial first season and Dollhouse after the second. Anyhoo, Jmontilla may not have worded his comment the best way possible but this IS the internet. Grammar sucks on here. You need to develop your INTERNET reading comprehension skillz. For what it's worth, I apologize for insulting your reading ability.

us whedon fans gotta stick together and defend Fox... yeah they shat the bed on Firefly, but no other network would have given us a second season of Dollhouse AND two extra seasons of Arrested Development... as for Fringe, i can't express how much better it gets after midway through season 1...
