First look at the Batman: Year One animated feature

Apr. 20, 2011by: Paul Tassi

I'm not a terribly big comic book reader (I know, call for my head on a spit since I work at a fansite like this), but even I've read through Frank Miller's excellent Batman: Year One, and was excited to learn it was getting its own film.

No, it's not a Nolan-made blockbuster, as it's all animated, but it should still be interesting to see how it translates. The film stars Bryan Cranston and Ben Mackenzie, along with geek goddesses Eliza Dushku and Katee Sackoff voicing the principal roles, and we now have out first brief look at the film below.

It's not a whole lot to go on, but it's something. It's altered from the original art style to be sure, but doesn't look too shabby to me. What do you think?

Extra Tidbit: What's your favorite Batman storyline of all time?

I like the direction of the art for the most part. It clearly has taken it's cues from the book but still has a mass appeal to it. Not an easy task. On the tidbit, I was always partial to "A Death in the Family" especially the cover art with Batman holding a dead Jason Todd in his arms... Pretty awesome stuff.

"Year One" is a very tight, artful story. It'll make a fantastic animated adaptation.

Dark Knight Returns, while it has some striking iconography, left me a little cold story-wise.

One of my favorites is definitely "A Lonely Place Of Dying", which introduced Robin #3. As a youngin' that made me a Batman fan for life.

I'd like to hear Batman say once on film: "I'm the God damned Batman!" but my favorite stories are:

1. The Long Halloween
2. Dark Victory
3. The Dark Knight Returns

Looks good. though it is a bit jarring when seeing an animated Batfilm that doesn't have Conroy voicing Bats.

TIDBIT: It's hard to pick one as most mentioned below are all excellent, so I decided to bring up one I like a lot. Bruce Wayne Murderer/Fugitive. I love how he decided that "Bruce" was a liability and how much of a dick he became during the story.

I like it. Extra tidbit: Definitely Hush. The story gathers lots of character without making them look goofy. Hush himself is also a nice villain.

Hush. I know the ending was weak for some but the whole journey to that ending was incredible, got so excited about the arrival of comic day when that storyline was on.

@tidbit

Knightfall was the very first comic series I ever collected as a kid, the covers are what first attracted me to them. I still remember racking leaves for old ladies, then racing to the corner store on my bike to buy more issues from the spinning rack with the money I made. I also would like to see an animated feature set in "No Mans Land" Gotham.

As far as I'm concerned the Animated movies DC produces are far greater than any live action adaptation. Comics just make more since in animation than in live action in my eyes.

I'll get some negs for this but...

My favorite Batman storyline, I must admit...is Hush. It just feels like a Batman comic ought to. Lots of villains, a murder mystery, Jim Lee's unparalleled artwork, and Batman himself just has a certain gravitas.

Don't feel too bad, Paul. This is a movie site. So what if most of the members are also comic fanboys? The rest of us just wanna be entertained for a couple of hours.

Looking slick.

Still wish they would have chosen something other than Year One, but Timm and his crew have been putting out quality products and this should be no different.

1. The Long Halloween
2. The Dark Knight Returns
3. Knightfall

When is it being released?

Oh and I'm waiting for superhero movies to be made in RenderMan (CGI). I really do think that's the next big step for popular animation. So many possiblities without needing a $300 million budget.

Lovin those stills! Batman year one is my favorite batman story arc for sure. It's so raw and gritty. Dark knight returns is second and is an equally cinematic read, followed by knightfall, long Halloween, hush, dark victory and then death in the family. All great stories worthy of a batman animation (which have been fantastic lately).
