First look at the Green Arrow costume for the CW's pilot Arrow

Mar. 19, 2012by: Paul Shirey

The first shot of Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow in the CW's new pilot for ARROW was revealed today and it's not too shabby.  Designed by Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood, who recently worked on SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN, the design is more in line with the comic character and less like the version portrayed on SMALLVILLE.

Take a look:

Looks pretty good, but I'll still need to see a promo that knocks my socks off before I buy into this one.  Anyone remember that AQUAMAN pilot with Justin Hartley (who played Green Arrow in SMALLVILLE as well...got all that?) and Ving Rhames?  Yeah, nobody does.  It's definitely a risky move, tackling another superhero property since SMALLVILLE ran its course (I'd still rather see a Superman show with Tom Welling, but whatever).

David Nutter, the director/executive producer of ARROW, had this to say about his version of Oliver Queen:

“When I directed the pilot for Smallville, I knew that making Clark Kent relatable would be the key to audiences believing in him as a hero. Arrow is a different show — darker and harder-edged — but it’s the same core idea. We’re creating a real, believable world in which Oliver Queen can do incredible things. Colleen Atwood’s great work on the Arrow costume reflects that effort.”

Here's a bare-bones synopsis:

After being marooned for five years on a remote island, former billionaire playboy Oliver Queen returns with a mysterious agenda and a lethal set of new skills that he uses in a war on crime.

CW has yet to announce a premiere date for the pilot, but expect it soon.

Extra Tidbit: Which DC character would you like to see in their own TV series? My vote is for Deathstroke.

I'm digging the costume. We'll have to wait and see though for what the show would end up seeming like.

Extra tidbit: I'd love to see a cop drama based in Gotham City where we have Commissioner Gordon being the main character while dealing with the various villains in the Rogues Gallery.

Doing this on the heels of Smallville, on the same network, and not casting Justin Hartley and not making it a spinoff of Smallville seems like really bad idea. And yes, Hartley's Green Arrow was my favorite part of the last half of Smallville's run.

I agree except that this gives them an opportunity to recast Black Canary, etc. Geoff Johns (the Chief Creative Officer for DC Entertainment) wanted Black Canary to have a bigger role in the last two seasons but the actress who played her was rarely available and they chose not to recast her. Same thing with the actor who played Impulse: they would talk about him as if he were running around doing stuff for them but they wouldn't show the actor on screen, possibly because they had regretted

Now all these roles will no doubt eventually be recast. There probably won't be anyone playing the big three though (Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman).

Not too shabby!

Aquaman actually showed promise, the pilot was perdy damn good. It was cancelled simply because anything filmed on the water gets it's ass kicked by production cost overruns and they weren't prepared to do that.

I got bored with Green Arrow as a supporting character after a couple seasons of smallville, so I really have no interest in a whole series around the character. I see this show going the way of Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Birds of Prey, The Cape, and other failed superhero shows.

I can see it now...

Cut to WB executive: "We put out Green Lantern last year and it bombed. What was the problem? I got it! No one likes Green! Therefore, in order to make sure the Green Arrow TV show is a hit, we will just title it 'Arrow'. Yes, it HAS to work! I mean, dropping the descriptor worked for John Carter, right?"

It can be interesting, as I was a big fan of Smallville back in the day. BUT only if they has the proper budget to do a SUPERHERO series....The last 3 seasons of Smallville were prime example of how a good concept on paper can be AWEFUL & sucks ass(Doomsday! Zod!! Darkseid!!! ...meh) only because of very very poor CGI, production value and set design. I know that the CW shows never have a decent budget comparing to other networks, sometimes it doesn't matter because of clever screenplay & good

X.T. After the Nolan trilogy, instead of doing the impanding reboot (yeah, its happening), take a break from movie, and do a Batman series like Smallville on Tv, but not as teen drama, more like adult Bruce Wayne equivalent of the last season of SV....then that way I can have the Justice League of SV including Batman someday. I know I know, but this is just wishful thinking.

Supernatural does a pretty great job with sfx and the like... creators of the Arrow show should definitely ask them for some tips on working within the CW budget.

Thats what I was saying about "clever screenplay & good storylines"...but even Supernatural is falling now. Just compare the first 4/5 seasons with the last 2s, the production value & CGI work is really starting to lack. Example, the whole western town set of season 6 episode 'Frontierland' was just 100% copy paste from Se.2 ghost town set of 'All Hell Breaks Loose Part 1', not even a slight change. Supernatural itself is going to need some help I think.

i will give it a shot

I think it can have a shot.i still believe they should do a nightwing show and call it bludhaven, have nightwing with a bunch of gadgets like batman and make it a coming of age of a superhero.it can work if done right.

I was really excited for this show until I saw who they casted. I just don't think this guy is the right guy to play Oliver Queen/Green Arrow.

I would have loved to have seen Justin Hartley back playing him in a spin off show or something, but can understand (to a point) why they would just reboot the character in his own show. I just though Hartley played the character perfectly and will be a little sad not seeing him reprise his role.

I'll give this a shot for sake of the character

Could go either way. Can't say much at this point in time anyway now can we.
But all I will say is remember Aquaman and Wonder Woman...

Deathstroke is cool but I really don't think he'd be able to carry his own show. My pick would be Cyborg. Call it "Jump City" or "Cy" or something like that.

Really stupidly minor, but I love that they aren't using a crossbow or compound bow like they did at times in Smallville.
This looks more authentic to me which means I like it more.

I used to enjoy Smallville way back when, so this could be good. Who knows. I'd actually like to see a darker, longer lifespan take on Batman. Not something that WB would do, something darker that we might see on a cable network. I know Batman has been played out pretty well, but I still like the saga and would like to see a different take on that story.

Smallville was horrid

I never understood why people liked Smallville? Trying to make this hick town where Superman grew up into a Hipster filled, hotty filled, troublesome around every corner place. For god sakes they made Superman growing up with Lex, how fucking stupid is that?
