First look at the new Ecto-1 from Paul Feig's Ghostbusters reboot

07.08.2015

Ghostbusters Paul Feig Kristen Wiig Melissa McCarthy Leslie Jones Kate McKinnon Banner

It's been a busy week or so for GHOSTBUSTERS news, with multiple casting announcements and the first looks at the new proton packs and uniforms, and now director Paul Feig has shared the first image of the new Ecto-1.

So what's the verdict? Well, its design doesn't stray too far from the original version, but like the proton packs and uniforms, part of me wishes Feig and company had gone with a completely new looking GB vehicle for the reboot. Not saying the new Ecto-1 should be a Mom van or Smart car, but I'd be OK with an overhauled design, especially since the reboot won't have an connection to the original movies.

While I still have mixed feelings about the reboot, I am going to give it a chance. Production is in full swing for GHOSTBUSTERS, and it is set to open on July 22, 2016.

I wonder how it feels to be making a film that absolutely no one cares about or wants to see? How do you even muster up the courage to get out of bed in the morning and go to work on this thing? Oh yeah I'm sure the millions of dollars they got paid helps a little. Still has there EVER been a more hated film in production????/

Too late for hate to stop this thing

... but now I have a kind of Pavlovian response to any news about this movie. Just "dislike dislike dislike"...

Maybe it will be just as funny as Spy

which means not funny at all with some noisy and annoying women who run around the whole movie.
Oh yeah and a lot of screaming at each other.

Like the proton packs and costumes it just looks like a cheap rip off of the original, but without the charm. At least they're being consistent.

It feels like one foot in, one foot out on this reboot. Why are they using the same logo if the original Ghostbusters never happened?

I've never heard anyone mention as if the original Ghostbusters never happened? Either way changing the logo would seriously piss off fans even more.

It reminds me of one of the fan made cars you'd see every once in a while... maybe during a convention. An effort, but realistically a failure. I was expecting more from this guys "own" vision of the movie.

The problem for me is that none of these design choices show any reason for this reboot to exist. Feig keeps saying new and different yet all I see are rehashes of Reitman, Aykroyd, and Ramis' original ideas. Ghostbusters is a fun idea that can be expanded upon, but everything I've seen just seems lazy and not creative at all.

Perhaps what we've seen is only the first stage of things in the first half of the movie. Remember in Raimi's first Spider-Man movie how Parker's first "costume" was nothing more than sweat pants and a mask? Maybe that's what we're seeing here, and by the end of the movie, they will have completely updated uniforms, gear and vehicles.

Liked what I've seen thus far

Not really upset by this film because it's not trying to crap over the originals like so many of these sequels tend to do, it's about finding a balance. Jurassic World is the perfect example of a tribute to the original while being something completely new. I'm hopeful this Ghostbusters film is just that.

I think I love it

Just like the Ecto-1 in 1984, this '80s era Cadillac will look just out of place enough amid modern NYC streets & hybrid cars to be interesting & endearing without being cartoonish. And they didn't festoon it with too much gear on the top like Ghostbusters 2 did. Can't wait to see it swing around a corner.

shoulda called it the ECTO-2

hey at least it isn't modern PT Cruizer or something contemporary.
its funny that every comment is picking on the oversized yellow light, which I found funny, who cares really?
I think its the CAST we're worried about (and yes I have my reservations too) why did it have to be a gender swapped remake in the first place?
the car? no complaints, it looks fine.... in fact at first I thought it was the original ECTO-1

Jesus! Could that yellow light be any bigger???
I hate to pick at all the details of this film, cause you know a lot of people will, but I hate big police lights just like the giant yellow bucket on top of the new echo one. You see these police lights on southern police cars in 1970s tv shows and movies, they're annoying. It's bigger than a KFC Family Size Bucket! It's almost as big as Melissa McCarthy, Boom!

Please get a bigger yellow light!

I'm baffled if this is not in any way connected to the original why does everything look like it was ripped right from the original but with a lower budget. Everything about this movie so far is simply spitting on the original. Let me guess they will use a Ray Park theme song but it wont be who ya gonna call, but who ya gonna text.

Looks a little hearse like from the side, the court is still out on whether its even fit to brandish the "Ecto-1" plate!

I like the design. I was afraid instead of a hears it would be a mini-van or a camper or something. I don't remember if the ghost hood ornament was in the original movies or not, but I think that's a nice little touch.

Is it just me or does the car look extra lame with that piece of trim cutting the logo in half? Could the not have just taken that off?

I wonder if in 'The very near future' we will be looking back on this as the Era in cinema of failed Reboots?

The voices of an entire generation of filmmakers have been lost to rebooting echoes of the past. You bet future filmmakers and critics will be writing about this as a lost era.

Popular film has always relied on sequels, remakes, and adaptations. Its silly to think this will really stand out during this era.

I dont think it is silly at all. Agreed there have been remakes before, Scarface being a classic example. But I do not remember a time when remakes were this bad.Plus my original comment didn't include sequels or prequels.

For God's Sake, Feig! Do you have some kind of need or urge to ruin every design of the original movie? I'm sure there're actual Ecto-1 cars on display somewhere out there and the owner of those cars would prefer them over this sorry excuse for an Ecto-1. How can Sony greenlight this design? Even that Chrysler Ecto-1 from fanmade film years ago looks better than this new one.

Exactly Leadhand83! I'm not a religious guy, but I pray that this "re-boot" will bomb bigger than the A-bomb testing in the Nevada desert.
