We got our first taste of what's to come from the upcoming IRON MAN 3 via some spy shots, but now we have our first official image from the production, featuring Robert Downey Jr. facing down a line-up of Iron Man suits, from Mark I to Mark VII.

Suit up:

Looking pretty sweet to me.  I'm most excited for director Shane Black's involvement in this above all else.  I really feel like he'll tap into something we haven't seen before and give us more of what we want.  It's a win-win so far.

Here's the announcement:

Following in the footsteps of the record-breaking Marvel Studios’ release “Marvel’s The Avengers,” production on the highly anticipated film “Iron Man 3,” directed by Shane Black, has commenced production in Wilmington, North Carolina. The production schedule will also include locations in Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina, Miami, Florida and China.

Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1963, “Iron Man 3” returns Robert Downey Jr. (“Iron Man,” “Marvel’s The Avengers”) as the iconic Super Hero character Tony Stark/Iron Man along with Gwyneth Paltrow (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2,”) as Pepper Potts, Don Cheadle (“Iron Man 2”) as James “Rhodey” Rhodes and Jon Favreau (“Iron Man,” “Iron Man 2”) as Happy Hogan. Set for release in the U.S. on May 3, 2013, Marvel’s “Iron Man 3” marks the second feature to be fully owned, marketed and distributed by Disney, which acquired Marvel in 2009.

“Iron Man 3” continues the epic, big-screen adventures of the world’s favorite billionaire inventor/Super Hero, Tony Stark aka “Iron Man.” Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing the film. Executive producers on the project include Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Charles Newirth, Victoria Alonso, Stephen Broussard and Dan Mintz.

The creative production team on the film includes two-time Oscar®-winning director of photography John Toll, ASC (“Braveheart,” “Legends of the Fall”), production designer Bill Brzeski (“The Hangover,” “Due Date”), editors Jeffrey Ford, A.C.E. (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” “Captain America: The First Avenger”) and Peter S. Elliot (“Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer”), and costume designer Louise Frogley (“Quantum of Solace,” “Contagion”).

IRON MAN 3 opens on May 3, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: Future rogues I'd like to see: Madame Masque, The Grey Gargoyle, Jack Daniels.

Stealth Armor Version, please.

No mention of ScarJo in that press release. I had read she was popping up as Black Widow again.

Something I immediately notice...

The Mark II Armor is back on the rack...stripped of all the 'War Machine' upgrades.

Raises the question: What will War Machine Mark II look like?

@ Extra tidbit: Jack Daniels! Me too that's one I would have loved to see, but I don't think it'll happen anytime soon. And not necessarily because of Disney.
It would have been great to have the Demon In A Bottle hinted at progressively over the first 2 Iron Man, and even Avengers, for shit to finally hit the fan in Iron Man 3. And then, in Iron Man 3, would've been the best time (and way) to introduce War Machine. Then, at the end of Iron Man 3 cue Tony's "return" to form (and sobriety) to

Quicker IM3 is done, the Quicker we can get a HULK3

I hope that this film turns out better then IM2 did (not that it was bad, just could have been a lot better). Also i hope Ruffalo makes an appearance in this film for more than 2min. Then Marvel can see how popular his character is so they can get on a HULK3 like asap

Just curious how would having Ruffalo in the film show anyone how popular Hulk is? This movie will make incredible money whether he's in it or not. I think all of the reaction to Hulk in Avengers has shown how popular Hulk is they just haven't figured out how to utilize him on his own as well as we'd all like.

Well having Ruffalo in the film (that he's signed on to do 9 films) would help when you do Test screenings? Focus groups? and WHEN (cause they will) they get enormous positive feedback, the marketing team can take it to the CEO. The CEO who doesn't think Hulk deserves another solo film, even after the marketing team said that the Hulk tested through the roof in the Avengers.

So to answer your question further, having Banner in the film and gaining more momentum, proving to the CEO Hulk

The amazing acting of RDJ plus the incredible writing/directing ability of Shane Black makes this my most anticipated comic book movie of next year.
