First official image of Christian Bale in Ridley Scott's biblical epic Exodus

Dec. 30, 2013by: Paul Shirey

So far we've seen a few set pics from Ridley Scott's new biblical epic EXODUS showing a Robin Hood-esque Christian Bale who is playing Moses in the cinematic retelling and Joel Edgerton in Egyptian Pharoah attire as Ramses, but nothing official has surfaced until now. Following on the heels of Darren Aronofsky's own biblical epic, NOAH, Scott's film tackles the tale of Moses and Ramses' rivalry, which led to the parting of the red sea and the Ten Commandments. It's one of the more popular stories in a number of religioous texts, including the Hebrew Bible, The Qur'an, and Baha'i scripture, making it a story that crosses over to many different audiences. Bale's Moses looks to be in the age range of when the initial slave revolution began, which sent him on the ultimate journey to free his people and lead them to the desert.

Let my people go!:

I'm always excited to have Ridley Scott working on an epic production as very few filmmakers can handle them as well as him. GLADIATOR and KINGDOM OF HEAVEN are magnificent examples of what the filmmaker is capable of in this genre and even his less-beloved ROBIN HOOD had its charms. With a cast that includes Bale, Edgerton, Aaron Paul, Sigourney Weaver, Ben Kingsley, and John Turturro, EXODUS certainly has a lot going for it. I'm sure that Aronofsky's NOAH will play some role in determining the hype for EXODUS, depending on how audiences warm up to the biblical films, but the final test will be simply whether or not they're good films, regardless of their genre.

EXODUS opens on December 12, 2014.

Ridley Scott at the helm of a Biblical epic - sold!

He doesn't look particularly Moses-y here though.

Why did Bale bail on Noah, only to be in this? I'm not being cute, I genuinely want to know.

If I had a choice with working with modern-day Ridley Scott or Darren Aronofsky - that's not really a choice.

As long as Bale doesn't use his Batman voice, I'd say we got a good movie on our hands.

A Prometheus tie in? I know, never in a million years, but....

Do the Engineers from Prometheus show up? Remember they originally were thinking that the reason the Engineers wanted to destroy Earth was in retaliation for us killing their messenger. Aka Jesus.

That hair cut of Bale's looks like that Moses has just come from the office..not the right hair cut for this film I think.

The only reason I care about this film is Aaron Paul. That's not entirely true, but it's like, THE reason I pay attention to any EXODUS news. GIVE US AARON PAUL, BITCH!

Really excited for this one. If Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven are anything to go by, then we are in for a great time.

Wouldn't it be great if Aaron Paul turns to Bale towards the end and says "Part that sea, bitch!"

Sorry, this may rub people the wrong way and Im not trying start another "race war" like the "black Johnny Storm" debate. BUT, I would like to have seen someone with a slightly darker complextion, someone that is or can pass as middle eastern. This is nothing against Bale, but Im tired of Hollywood casting white actors for ethnic roles, like Prince of Persia or The Last Airbender. Maybe its me but after having lived in the general area during my time in the military, its just hard for me to

You mean like Charlton Heston? Yeah, I understand your point, but this is not the first Moses to be portrayed by an actor with light skin. The only Moses portrayal that I know to feature an ethnic appearance was in the Dreamworks animated film The Prince of Egypt, and that was drawn . . . and voiced by the very white Val Kilmer.

@BrokenDreamer, yes, because something has been done a particular way before is an excellent reason to never change it. What a great line of thinking.
