First official image of Tom Cruise from Christopher McQuarrie's Jack Reacher

Jun. 27, 2012by:

The first image of Tom Cruise as JACK REACHER, the hero of author Lee Child's "Reacher" novels has arrived, featuring a clean-cut Cruise in the midst of a car chase.  The Christopher McQuarrie directed film is the first attempt at adapting the character for the screen and has the potential to set up another franchise for Cruise.

“He is an extremely pragmatic, matter-of-fact person,” McQuarrie says of Reacher. “He’s very solitary, but he can’t walk away from a situation that needs to be made right. His own sense of right and wrong tie into that situation and he can’t leave until it’s been resolved. That’s his Achilles heel.”

Have a look:

“He is free from any sort of anxiety. He is truly not encumbered by all the bulls–t that makes up our daily lives,” McQuarrie says of Reacher's character. “He literally and figuratively has no baggage.”

I'm actually in the middle of reading the book this is based on, One Shot, and I think it will be interesting to see Cruise pull this off.  JACK REACHER is definitely a more stoic character and kind of an asshole, which isn't really Cruise's forte these days.  However, he's got the chops to pull it off and I look forward to seeing just how he does it.  Despite the height difference from the book.

“For those of you who know the books, I’m obviously not 6-foot-5, like Jack Reacher,” said the actor, who is 5-foot-7. “But Lee felt that I was the right guy to drive fast cars and kick the s–t out of people onscreen.”

JACK REACHER stars Cruise, Rosamund Pike, Richard Jenkins, Robert Duvall, Jai Courtney, and Werner Herzog and is set for a December 21, 2012 release.

Extra Tidbit: If you've never seen Christopher McQuarrie's Way of the Gun then you have homework this weekend.

Werner Herzog plays an assassin!

This is the primary reason that I am geeked about this movie.

If you have never seen Way of the Gun you can't call yourself an action fan.

Reacher isn't so much an asshole, as he's a guy who doesn't take any shit - and can sometimes be pretty ruthless on some baddies. I like Cruise, on and off screen, but as a Reacher fan as well, I'm still finding it a tough time to see Cruise as Reacher.

Cruise is the man. Was really happy they bumped the release date up for this. And then we got Oblivion next April. Glad to see Cruise rising back to the top of movie stardom where he belongs. The man rarely (if ever) drops the ball on a performance of his. And how the hell is he about to turn 50? Still looks 40

I'm not acquainted with Jack Reacher, but Cruise can play an asshole like few others. While it is true that since he became a super-star (at least since Mission: Impossible), only Magnolia and Tropic Thunder really qualify, but going back to his Rain Man days, it was hard to find a Cruise role that wasn't just a little bit a-holish.

Don't forget Collateral. Vincent may be a cool asshole but an asshole nonetheless.

I remember comedian Ben Bailey saying that he really wanted the role and was bummed when they cast Tom Cruise, mainly because Jack Reacher is meant to be a tall character (as mentioned in the article) and Bailey himself is pretty tall while Tom...isn't. Cruise is a good actor and I mainly hope he makes Reacher sufficiently different and distinguishable from his other characters.

I am Pro-Cruise

Outside of the movies, I can't say I'm crazy about Tom Cruise. On that note, though, I don't read Us Weekly, I hate reality television, and I don't give a fuck what celebrities do outside of a set. So Tom Cruise as an actor? I think he's one of the greatest. Truly.

He knocks most (if not all) of his roles out of the park, and I always look forward to seeing what else he brings. Looking forward to this.

It may be good, but the title sucks.
