First official images from Tarantino's Django Unchained with Foxx, DiCaprio, and Waltz

Apr. 26, 2012by: Paul Shirey

The first official images from Quentin Tarantino's DJANGO UNCHAINED have appeared online and feature the three main stars of the film; Jamie Foxx as Django, Christoph Waltz as Dr. King Schultz (who Waltz describes as "Richard Roundtree meets Clint Eastwood), and Leonardo DiCaprio as Calvin Candie, the film's plantation-owning villain.

In the film, Waltz's German Bounty Hunter, Dr. Schultz, frees Foxx's Django in order to help exact some revenge on a group of men called the Brittle Brothers, who also happen to be Django's former owners. In exchange, Schultz agrees to assist in Django in his quest to free his wife, played by Kerry Washington.

“Christoph’s character is a little aloof to what slavery actually is. He’s not familiar with everything, and when he sees atrocities, it’s Greek to him,” Foxx says. “But Django lets him know this is the way the world is and we got to get used to it. He teaches Django certain things he needs to become a whole man, and [Django] also teaches Christoph that when life deals you these cards, here’s what you’ve got to do.”

DiCaprio's Calvin Candie sounds very similar to Daniel Day Lewis' Bill the Butcher in GANGS OF NEW YORK.  Candie is a business man and plantation owner who makes his toughest slaves fight to the death in gladiatorial combat on his plantation, called Candieland. Django and Schultz have to get in good with Candie in order to find a way to free Django's wife.

The issue of slavery plays heavily into the film, but Foxx says that Tarantino has a good handle on how he's approaching it.  “There’s a beautiful way [Tarantino] found for the characters to talk to each other. It’s mindblowing. You’ve never heard it this way,” says Foxx. “You’ve seen movies deal with slavery — or westerns that never dealt with slavery – do it the safe way. This way is like … wow.”

However, the motives of Django have nothing to do with changing the world, merely his own world.

“All Django wants to do is get his wife,” Foxx says. “He’s not trying to cure or solve slavery. He just wants to get his life back.”

I'm looking forward to this for all the obvious reasons.  Interestingly, I'm more stoked to see DiCaprio gnaw some scenery to the bone as this is his first true villain role.  We've seen so many sides of DiCaprio already and the bad guy part is ripe for exploration from the actor.

DJANGO UNCHAINED opens on December 25, 2012.

Extra Tidbit: I think Foxx is great and will do an outstanding job in this, but I'll always wonder what Will Smith would've done with the role had he not turned it down.

Tidbit: Couldn't agree more. Whenever I think about this film, that eventually crosses my head. Luckily, once this film is in my brain THAT problem will be solved.

Just like Waltz stole the show from 'Inglourious Basterds,' DiCaprio is bound to do the same with 'Django Unchained.'

Can't Wait!

Leo is gonna kill it in this movie, I just have that feeling. I want a pic of him and Kurt together. I think Jamie Foxx will do a great job in this movie, but I'll always wonder what Idris Elba would have done if he had been chosen as he was my choice for the role. He is ready for that big type role I think. Can't wait for a trailer.

That picture of Leo is...

WHOA! Just what I pictured when heard he'd be a plantation owning bad guy....He and Kurt Russell as the evil duo, not to mention Sam Jackson as the slave trainer are what making me the most excited. Oh, and the fact that its a Tarantino film. Hell, EVERYTHING about this film is making me counting the days!

I don't buy Jamie Foxx yet, but I will eventually. But with Leo DiCaprio, I cannot wait to see what he does as a villain, and about time he is too.

Waltz's character is missing the swastika Aldo Raine carved in his forehead. Looks like Waltz is back to reprise the same role, but in a western. So far,it looks sort of promising.

I don't understand where people are getting that-Waltz has made it pretty clear that he wants Schultz to be virtually nothing like Landa.

@TheWalrus; You missed the point.QT will make Waltz's character in Django a lot like Landa regardless on what Waltz say's. QT has the last word.

Well, I haven't read the script (I'm choosing to wait to see the movie), so I can't verify what he'll be like. But I would think QT thinks better of Waltz than to patronize him with a duplicate of his last character.

Will Smith over Jamie Foxx? Really?

Will Smith- 2 time Oscar Nominee
Jamie Foxx- Oscar Winner

Besides, Jamie did a much better job in Ali I was surprised he wasn't nominated for that one.

btw Leo looks sharp rocking that beard :)

I never said I preferred him over Foxx...Just curious what he would've done with the role. Smith sells himself short on the reg and I think this would've revitalized his ailing career, which is going stagnant with rehash. It would've been a bold risk.

EEEEeeeeEEee....

Man, I haven't felt this excited for a film in a long time. My first impression of Leo was "Bill the Butcher a la Tarantino." He looks sharp as hell. And the thought of Waltz as a Shaft-Eastwood hybrid is insane. And while our opinions remain divided on Foxx as a whole, I have NO doubt he will be terrific in this. God, Xmas can't come soon enough.

He also played the good guy. So, this is his first TRUE villain role. I don't think his twin good guy will show up in Django.

Wasn't he the villain in 'Titanic'? I'm pretty sure he played the down-and-out bum who steals the wife of an honest, upstanding businessman. Right?

Can't wait to see each new Tarantino film. Inglourious Bastards was brilliant! It's better that Will Smith isn't in this one.

Looks brilliant. Tarantino undoubtedly has a good eye and his movies are exceedingly stylish, and it looks like this is no exception. I'm glad to see Christoph Waltz not playing the uber-villain for once, and Leonardo looks every bit the slimeball in that costume and hair.

After 'The Dark Knight Rises', this is my most-anticipated film of the year. 'Seven Psychopaths' and 'Gravity' are right up there, too. Also, 'Brave.' But yeah, Tarantino for the win.
