First official look at DiCaprio, Maguire and Mulligan in The Great Gatsby

12.13.2011

Despite almost no official press yet at all, THE GREAT GATSBY is topping a lot of must-see lists for next year. The film is directed by Baz Luhrmann and has assembled quite a cast for itself with roles for Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton to name a few.

Today we have our first official look at the cast of the film in costume. Nothing mind blowing to be sure, but kind of cool to see and at a $100M budget for a movie like this, it should be interesting to see what Luhrmann does with it.

Here's the plot in case you skipped the required reading in 11th grade:

“The Great Gatsby” follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.

Oh Leo...

So close to that Oscar, yet, so far away.

Genuine question

I'm not trying to be insulting here, nor am I criticizing the man...But, is it just me, or does it look like DiCaprio has lost some weight in his face? He looks much more lean than he has in the last couple years.

For all the great writing Gatsby has, it really was a dull piece of literature, and these days with shows like Mad Men, a simple adaptation won't be enough. The book is outdated and is nothing more than a bunch of caricatures of mostly terrible people collected in one book. People will hate me, but I find this and Catcher in the Rye to be two pieces of "classic" literature that are completely overhyped. So, I have a hard time thinking this movie is going to be the least bit interesting, even

The first film was a bore, I don't see how they can make this one any more interesting.

Another movie about people boozing it up, slutting it up, and generally making incredibly stupid-as-all-fuck decisions, thereby ruining their lives in ways we saw coming from a million miles away. *YAAAWN* I see enough of this mindnumbing dog shit in real life. I'd like to see a movie where these people are treated as villains, rather than protagonists. Elliot Ness should bust out of god damn nowhere and gun them all down.

Film is going to be terrific. Just wish Cooper was playing Tom Buchanan instead of Joel Edgerton.

I suppose if I can't get a version w/ Vincint Chase and Scorsese, this will be a good runner-up.

I have a lot of mixed feelings about this

Ive only likes 2 of Baz's 4 films, and i do like the cast. But the Great Gatsby was one of the most overrated books i have ever read. I probably will end up seeing it eventually, but i'm not really looking forward to it.
(also, i always imagined Gatsby as a larger gentleman, interesting casting that really changed how i viewed the character)

Is it me, or does Carey Mulligan looks so good with short hair. Her style is so beautiful.

I think Tobey Maguire is going to put on an awesome performance and finally get respect as an actor. I think his Spiderman role hurt his career but if you have seen the movie Brothers you know he can pack a powerful performance. I hope the best for him.

It's good to see Dicaprio accepting his pretty boy image and going with it for a change to woo some ladies since he was trying to escape it after Titanic and Romeo for so many years. Hope this is good.
