First official look at Matt Damon in Neil Blomkamp's Elysium

Jul. 4, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Very little has been seen or heard from the production of director Neil Blomkamp's follow up to the now-classic DISTRICT 9, but today we have our first official look at the film, which toplines Matt Damon. ELYSIUM is expected to debut some footage at Comic Con this year, which should get the gears grinding for the pic, if not more so than they already are.

Grab the clippers:

I'm not a huge fan of Damon's, but he has proven to be able to deliver on the action front (re: Jason Bourne) and the political subtext of the film will likely suit his sensibilities, as he's always quick to remind us where he stands on that front. What political subtext, you ask?

Here's the synopsis:

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesnt stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

DISTRICT 9 was a phenomenal and surprising film, given that many didn't expect it to be much more than a cheaply made sci-fi romp. It ended up being a massive success and brought a lot to the sci-fi table. Mostly, it was just brutally awesome. I think we're all hoping for that same intensity for Elysium.

ELYSIUM stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, William Fichtner, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, Wagner Moura, and opens on March 1, 2013.

Oh, Alice Braga, you minx, you...

Extra Tidbit: After seeing his Halo test film I still can't shake the dream of how awesome a feature-length film of the videogame series would be as directed by Blomkamp. Perhaps someday...

Pretty sweet! That gun has got to be designed by Weta Workshop because it looks very similar to the ones they designed in Avatar, which only means they design guns to how they will realistically evolve.

Just what we need, another battle of the classes movie. I can watch this crap on TV every day.

Sounds like it will be a solid action film, but I can hear conservatives complaining already about how "liberal" the film is. Sadly, this is probably highly accurate. The rich WOULD use their money to save themselves, leaving the poor to fend for themselves.

I make less than 20k a year and I would never expect someone with a lot of money to help me out. I work hard to get what I have and don't expect people to hand me something I didn't earn.

This may be the first time I've ever heard someone say he/she doesn't like Matt Damon.

How can you not love the guy? He's a stupendous actor, is immensely versatile, seems to be a great guy and he has an excellent resum. But hey; opinions, assholes...

The picture looks very enticing, should be gritty and original if anything

Lovely lets use a sci-fi film to take a jab at people who don't want criminals and terrorists running unchecked across our borders everyday. If Damon was really concerned maybe he could have gone to the local Home Depot and picked up an illegal to take his role for him.

From what I have heard this much more than just a rich vs. poor movie which is really good because I don't need Hollywood liberals preaching when they make a ton of money and are in the top 1%.

"Secretary Rhodes"

Likely a reference to Cecil B. Rhodes, the British-born champion of Colonialism and racially-stratified labor in the diamond mines of turn-of-the century South Africa. He was a xenophobe and helped put into place the social, economic, and political systems that acted as the precursors to apartheid. LOVE Blomkamps not-so-subtle yet INGENIOUS social commentary.

I think you mean Cecil John Rhodes, but great (and likely accurate) observation!
