First official look at the new Smurfs movie

Jun. 16, 2010by: Mike Sampson

These are The Smurfs. Very....smurfy, huh? I'm not wild about the design of the Smurfs from the upcoming movie from Sony Pictures Animation but then again, I was never wild about the Smurfs (give me "The Snorks" any day). While the film features the animated Smurfs, the movie features the live-action talent of Neil Patrick Harris, Hank Azaria, Jayma Mays and Sonia Vergara. The trailer for THE SMURFS will be online later today so keep an eye out for that (I'll update this article with the video once it goes live).

What do you think of the Smurfy trio above? (And if you couldn't tell, that's Grouchy, Papa Smurf and Clumsy in the photo.)

This Looks Shopped

I can tell from some of the pixels and from seeing quite a few shops in my time.

really - you don't that's a picture of real smurfs? Or do you mean its fan made? If it is - give them an award - 'cause they just release a full teaser trailer.

This movie will only confuse it's target audience (anyone born after 1995) and will be forgotten when the next over-advertised pile of crap comes out.

Ick, these things scare me. I do not want to stare at THAT for two hours. These look horrible. Why someone thought this movie would be good, I have no idea.

I like the design of the Smurfs. They look like I'd imagine them in such a thing.

However, I'm still on the fence about the movie itself.

kids movies today suck ass!

Whatever happened to the Sandlot's and the Goonies, The Secret of Nimh. Movies that kids and adults could BOTH enjoy, even though the target audience was for kids. Those movies don't exist today, and are just shit ass Chipmunks, trendy, celebrity bull shit.

Thumbs

"failed? not financially."

Qualitively, they did. Most of the time, box office says squat about how good the movie is.

I def see your side of the coin. Sometimes these movie announcements make me want to slap an executive, too!

looking forward to your reaction for the inevitable BeastMaster remake.

These computer animated remakes of old cartoons is what I like to call "Whoring Out the Classics".

There's been Garfield, Scooby-Doo, Alvin and the Chipmunks... they all failed.

failed? not financially.

and where the source materials really that classic? watch them side by side with some warner brothers of fritz freleng or walter lantz. they were shitty assembly line cartoons that happened to come out when you were too young to know what is good.

I really don't understand all the hate

The Smurfs look cute and completely realistic for animated characters. I'd take this over another chipmunk movie any day.

Confused...

I'm not sure I understand why everyone is so angry... were you all really that invested in The Smurfs as kids? Does it really matter if they visit the city as opposed to spending the entire film in their tiny mushroom houses?

I'm quite sure this film isn't geared towards you. Trust me when I tell you, when movies like this are brought about, it's with the hopes of appealing far more to TODAY'S youth than it is yesterdays.

You guys all need to chill out. Our kids are going to love

If it is targeted toward TODAYS youth then why are they using characters that WE grew up with and todays youth didn't? Just sayin.

I agree with Brer B8a. And having it set in New York is relevant to kids TODAY, how?

They're making this for nostalgia so that we'll bring our kids to it. It's kind of like if they made a Transformers movie and focused on the humans instead of the robots. That would be silly wouldn't it? Wouldn't it?

@Brer B8a
- If it worked once, surely it could work again?

@Noct
- Umm...how is having it set in New York NOT relevant to kids today? Particularly kids who happen to live in NY?

One could argue that setting it in a fictional mushroom town that exists no where would be far less relevant...no?

I dig your rip on TF, though. F*ck that shit show...

rel·e·vant   [rel-uh-vuhnt]
–adjective
bearing upon or connected with the matter in hand; pertinent: a relevant remark.

New York isn't relevant because it has nothing to do with the Smurfs. It's like playing George Jones at a rave party. Sure you can do it, but it's not relevant.

Also relevant in your case would include having the Smurfs in Paris, for all the kids in Paris. Or maybe the Smurfs should go to Space. Kids love space. Probably even more than they love NY. Maybe it should

Maybe it should have taken place with Pirates. That's still pretty big right now. Maybe they could be in a Lady Gaga video wearing cigarette sunglasses and yellow police ribbon around their private parts. That's quite relevant.

New York, in regards to the Smurfs, is irrelevant. Simply by definition. You may find it quaint or charming. But relevant it is not.

Sorry.

Sigh. This is a bad idea. I so badly wanted this to work. Only God knows why I wanted to work, but I did.

As far as the design goes I don't know what else you could do to make them look more like CG Smurfs. I loved the Snorks too but they were just knock of Smurfs.

Red smurfs?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the Smurfs criticized or canceled for it's communist themes. With all those T party folks about, look for this film to be heavily protested with signs of Papa Smurf with a Stalin goatee.

What the Smurf?!

I do not recall any episodes of The Smurfs where the smurfs were in Times Square. We are off to a very bad start.

I don't see why people were even remotely excited about this one. First of all them making a movie based off of saturday morning cartoons is already suspect but then as soon as we heard raja gosnell's name attached to this, it doesn't matter how many Neil Patrick Harrises or Hank Azarias your cast has i already know this movie is going to miss the point entirely and be a complete waste of time.

They'd have been better off either reviving the tv show or making an animted film in the original

They'd have been better off either reviving the tv show or making an animted film in the original handdrawn style and definitely NOT HIRING RAJA GOSNELL TO DIRECT IT. Keep that man away from cartoons i like and keep him away from a camera and directors chair. That is all.

Then they're back and Neil Patrick Harris's bachelor pad riding around on the top of a spinning vinyl record, eating cheesits and knocking over lamps while Patrick shouts things like "No no no don't touch that ohhhh!".

i expect the belch sound effect count to be at least in the 100s for this one.
