First poster for Rian Johnson's sci-fi flick Looper with Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Apr. 6, 2012by: Paul Shirey

The time-travelling assassin sci-fi actioner LOOPER from director Rian Johnson has begun it's marketing push, releasing its first poster for the film today.  Starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the film has been generating a lot of positive buzz after screening a trailer at Wondercon last month.

Check out the Loopers:

And here's the official synopsis:

Time travel will be invented, but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they send their target 30 years into the past, where a “looper”—a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt)—is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good. . . until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. the film is written and directed by Rian Johnson and also stars Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels. Ram Bergman and James D. Stern produce.

I've been looking forward to seeing how this one turned out.  I loved Rian Johnson's film, BRICK, and feel that he's a talented filmmaker.  This is definitely a step up in terms of budget and genre, so I can't wait to see what he's got in store for us.  Next week will see a series of character vignettes leading up to the trailer premiere on Thursday, April 12th.

LOOPER time travels to theaters on September 28, 2012.

Extra Tidbit: I am really surprised at how Joseph Gordon-Levitt's career has taken off. He never seemed to be an actor that would become a leading man, but he's been climbing that ladder for a while now. Cheers to the underdog. He's done well.

are you sure this isn't a poster for the new james bond?

If you just look at the Joseph Levitt part of the poster I swear it looks like a James Bond poster. Tell me he doesn't look like a young Roger Moore, or Sean Connery in that poster. Movie sounds dope!

ever hear of...

time travel paradox? How the hell can your past and future self fight to the death? If the future self wins then you unmake your self, if the other way around then you are committing suicide? Why would you even go back in the first place? Sounds like shit, I'll wait to see.

So.....

Bruce Willis is sent back in time to be killed by his younger self? Did the mob really expect that plan to work?

That picture of JGL holding the gun doesn't look a fucking thing like him, neither does his image on the poster.

A lot of comments about this. JGL is wearing make-up prosthetics for the role to look more like the "past" version of Bruce Willis' character. I think that would account for the discrepancy. If you look at the pic of him just below the poster you can see it even more.

It'll be interesting to see this in motion...

Decent and interesting concept for the poster, but it only sort of pulls it off.

The whole "Bruce Willis" make-up thing on JGL is just WEIRD.

one of my most anticipated movies of the year

and it's a decent enough concept for a poster knowing the plot and all... but seriously, JGL looks like a wax figure here, what the hell?

Probably My 3rd Most Anticipated Film

...and, you forgot to mention, Shane Carruth, writer/director of the fucking Citizen Kane of time-travel films, Primer, was brought on as a consultant for this film.

Also, Rian Johnson fans, it has been confirmed that he will be coming back to direct another episode of Breaking Bad this season. Rejoice!
