First poster for Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug!

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

It was announced that the first trailer for THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG will be online very soon but the first poster for the movie is going to have to tide you over until then. While it isn't boring the poster also isn't an instant classic and it's about what you'd expect of a poster for the Peter Jackson film.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug poster

Although THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY had very mixed reviews the second film should have less filler than the first one. Fans of the book have said that Peter Jackson added quite a bit to the first film that wasn't in the novel. Hopefully THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG will feel more like a proper return to Middle Earth than what many fans experienced when the first film came out last year.  One thing THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG has going for it is red-hot Benedict Cumberbatch appearing as the dragon Smaug. Since the actor will portray Smaug through motion capture I'm very interested in seeing how the character turns out and to be completely honest the idea of a wicked dragon with Cumberbatch's voice scares the shit out of me.

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG will be in theaters on December 13th, 2013 and the final part of the trilogy, THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN is scheduled to be released on December 17th, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: Will THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG perform better or worse than the first one? How much do you think the negative fan and critic reaction towards THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED RETURN impact its box office gross?

I expect a boatload of thumbs down but I found the first Hobbit movie to be absolutely boring, after watching an hour, I had to turn it off. This is coming from someone who loved the LOTR trilogy.

I'm digging it

As someone else said, it's deceptively simple and epic. I especially like the red and smoke in the doorway letting you know that something evil is inside. It's simple and gets the point across. A very successful poster, IMO.

And yes, the art does have a real Allan Lee feeling to it. There are a few visual cues to the Halls of Khazad-Dum in there, which tickles this fanboy.

Sweet poster!

So sick of all the complaining & cash grab talk. They're also showing what went on AWAY from Bilbo & the Dwarves quest. Its enough to expand the story & link it to LOTR.

I've never read the book, its on my list but never got around to it. But i did enjoy the first movie. I kinda went into it expecting more of a kid friendly film than the last series and i felt like it delivered on that part and was entertaining.

I'm excited for the second film. Since i havent read the book i wont be disappointed comparing the two. Im sure it will be just as solid as the last one but again, nothing as epic as the first trilogy.

Good thinking! Don't watch the Hobbit movies! Don't watch Man of Steel! Don't watch Avengers 2, 3, 4! They all just want your money!

In reply to andris:

Man of Steel hasn't really appealed to me, and I wasn't too big on Avengers either. Of course, I thought the first Hobbit film was too long, inconsistent with its pacing, and probably could have been one strong film rather than three panned out films.

EDIT: It looks like the fanboys are out in force! 15 thumbs down to the initial comment, as of this writing.

"their not getting mine."

I'm guessing your money didn't go to a proper education either?

Like it... simple, clean and has the feel of the first three movies posters.

I still haven't gotten around to seeing the first part, but as soon as I do, I expect to be up for this second installment. Smaug and Bard are the big draw for me in a Hobbit movie anyway. I wonder if they'll work the Battle of Five Armies in or save it for the third (unnecessary) installment.

Very "Two-Tower-y". Maybe just like "An Unexpected Journey" was as lighthearted as "Fellowship of the Ring", this will be a little darker like the "Two Towers".

I wonder if they built the entrance to the Lonely Mountain in the same place they built Helm's Deep and Minas Tirith. Anyone remember that they tore down Helm's Deep when they were done shooting TTT to get Minas Tirith up for ROTK?

This is the first poster of this franchise so far that has the visual feel of Allan Lee! I love it!
