First rumors begin to fly about the plot of the new Star Wars films

Oct. 31, 2012by:

I have a good feeling about this.

Sorry, had to do it. Anyway, it does feel pretty damn awesome to be writing about a new STAR WARS trilogy and knowing that it will be STAR WARS: EPISODE VII and not another prequel. Sure, I liked the prequels, but they did not live up to the expectations that I or any other fan truly had.

Now that we know STAR WARS: EPISODE VII will be released in 2015, we can begin to rampantly speculate on what the movie will be about. Many of you already have voiced your desire to see either the Thrawn novels or an Old Republic set trilogy. From these first sources, it looks like neither of those will be what we see on the big screen in 3 years.

For the longest time, Lucas denied his vision for a nine or twelve movie series. But, now that the man himself said the next trilogy is already in the planning stages, he seems to have contradicted himself. With that in mind, The Wrap spoke with Dale Pollock, author of Skywalking: The Life And Films Of George Lucas, who claims the original outlines for the next three films are the “three most exciting stories...they had propulsive action, really interesting new worlds, new characters. I remember thinking, ‘I want to see these 3 movies.’” He also states the Luke, Han, and Leia characgters would have been in their 30s or 40s. That would mean either recasting the iconic roles with new, younger actors, or advancing them to their 60s or 70s in the story to fit with the actors current ages.

E Online also reported a source as stating there are no directors or writers selected yet and that the films are fully original stories and not adaptations of any comics or novels. So, that rules out Thrawn and many other dream stories for us fans. Granted, Disney doesn't have to abide by the existing treatments unless that is somewhere in the language of the merger. I would think Lucas would be open to changing the plan, but as was stated yesterday, Disney is locking in these first three movies for 2015, 2017, and 2019 and plan to continue making more every 3 years after that. So, even if Thrawn or Old Republic stories do not get made within the next 7 years, that doesn't mean they never will.

No one will be fully satisfied with STAR WARS: EPISODE VII unless it is the complete opposite of the prequels. Knowing that Lucas will not write or direct these new films definitely puts a lot of fans at ease. It remains to be seen what the plans will be, but you can be sure we will let you know. With such a short time before the first film will hit theaters, expect lots to develop over the next months include writers, directors, and casting announcements.

I think if Mark Hamill played a small part that's all I would really need to feel connected to the original trilogy. Having Harrison Ford would just be icing on the cake. I just hope he doesn't get all Bill Murray on us and flat out refuse to do it. Recasting a younger Luke, Leia and Han Solo would be the worst idea you could possibly do.

Lucas is giving all the money from the sale to charity

Funding education and other charitable causes. That's the best reason I could imagine for him to sell his baby. Truly amazing on his part.
That said, for the first time in a long time, I'm excited about Star Wars again.

I suddenly got very sad after reading this. I mean I'm already 39 years old and if they decide to make the Old Republic Trilogy right after this with the same spacing, I won't see it completed until I'm 54 years old. My god, where does it all go....

The only way that numbering the next movies as 7, 8 & 9 makes sense is if it remains the continuing story of the Skywalker family. Mark Hamill would be in a perfect position now to play an "Obi-Wan" mentor role to the next generation of Skywalker children. Whether that means ignoring the novels or embracing them, who knows. But good luck trying to convince Harrison Ford to come back... don't see that happening AT ALL.

No recast!

This is a very sensitive matter for many fans but in my opinion, Ideally, the story would take place 30 years after episode VI and Mark Hamill, Fisher and Ford would be back to reprise their roles not necessarily carrying the movie or the story on their shoulders but doing more than a cameo in order to introduce us to new worlds and characters. In case these actors are not available then I am absolutely against any type of recast. Please do this well Disney!

No recasting

I'm not even that big a "fan" of Star Wars. Certainly not a "fan boy." But I did like the Original Trilogy, and lately - before this whole Disney news - while lying in bed at night I've imagined a new Star Wars movie with Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, etc. I thought about how cool that would be. Especially if it looked "real" like the originals did. Real people, in real spaces, with real grittiness. You don't need massive CGI landscapes for this. Imagine Han Solo sitting in a little grimy bar. Or

Imagine Han Solo sitting in a little grimy bar. Or living in a little hut somewhere. Throw in little touches of The Force and light sabers, and it would all just seem so much more magical than a big green-screened pile of nothingness. And anyway, yah, use the same actors for sure. We're all getting older, and it would take us all on a journey along with the characters. We want to see that when we get older, we can still have adventures and dreams. In real life, we can't recast ourselves as younger every 20 years. So it doesn't take us to a magical place to recast Luke Skywalker with Chris Pine. It just kind of reminds us that we're old. But seeing Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford still out there in the universe, saving the day - That lets us dream that every day can be an adventure, whether in a galaxy far far away, or right here at home.

I'm ok with new Star Wars movies, but I'm not sure I want the films starring Luke, Leia, and Han. I love those characters, but I made my peace with the series and that their stories were closed. I know there are the novels which expand upon their future after the movies, but they never captured me the same way the movies did. Honestly, re-casting doesn't interest me, and I'm not sure what can be gained from having the older actors back. Star Wars is such a huge universe with so much potential.

If its me...I go with a small story, told on a grand scale. Like Empire Strikes Back. I want to get to know the interior of some spaceship a la the Falcon, relish some playful romantic tension between main characters, watch them outsmart and outmaneuver all manner of evil Imperials and freaky alien monsters.

Get away a bit from all the Jedi & geopolitics that dominated the prequels. Oh, you can have some Jedi about, even a main character...but I want more space cowboys, fighter pilots,

A female Han Solo or Boba Fett-like character. Indeed, a bounty hunter as a main protagonist offers up a world of possibilities, given they're treated as pure criminals and villains in both trilogies.

25 years after we defeated Hitler we were on the brink of WWIII with the Cuban missile crisis. 10 years after the Soviet Union fell we saw 9/11. In the real world, every time a dictator's statue falls and people rejoice in the streets there isn't long before some new crisis comes along threatening war, oppression, chaos. Doesn't mean it wasn't an amazing thing to liberate the concentration camps, tear down the Berlin Wall, or kill Bin Laden. Thats just how the world works.

In the first film, Obi Wan refers to the Jedi as having been the 'Guardians of Peace.' So perhaps an interesting way to go would be a scenario in which the New Republic & the Jedi seek to PREVENT or peacefully resolve a major conflict. But other forces (Sith, ex-Imperials, enemies unknown) seek to incite such a war for their own purposes. Still plenty of opportunity for large action sequences, even battles...basically half the James Bond movies were about preventing WWIII.

The Star Wars universe is nothing if not realist in its themes. A galaxy in which every conceivable technological, social, spiritual advance has been mastered...every reason for it to be the utopia every human dreams of...and yet there are still evil and corrupt forces that require constant vigilance to suppress & defeat.

Wow, I really don't know how they'll pull this off, especially with regards to the actors returning to their iconic roles, since many of them have moved on to other things - Carrie Fisher is a writer, Mark Hamill does voice acting, Harrison Ford is pretty much an acting legend thanks in part to Star Wars but he isn't the world's biggest Star Wars fan...I'm sure recasting the parts would cause a lot of controversy. I've always thought that a new Star Wars trilogy would be set in the same world,

I've always thought that a new Star Wars trilogy would be set in the same world, but with a different cast of core characters, but it would certainly be nice to see Luke, Leia, Han and gang all back on the big screen. While it seems they're probably not doing the Thrawn trilogy, I would love for Mara Jade to figure in this new trilogy somehow!

It will be a fucking disaster if you recast those roles. Mark Hamil age 70 has as much box office draw reprising Luke Skywalker as Chris Penn or Chris Hemsworth at age 30.

No Han Solo

If the writers choose to take this in a way that allows for the original cast, them they are going to be hard pressed to do something for Han Solo. Harrison ford has expressed his wishes in the past to remove himself as far as possible from the iconic role. I expect trying to get him to sign on for another turn at Han Solo is like asking bill Murray to sign on for another Ghostbusters, and we are all witnessing how that is turning out. Perhaps he might be willing to cameo or shoot a scene in

Be ready for that disappointment if original casting is a must for the new story.

They should do a story where a now older Luke Skywalker is forced to layover on a desert planet and while there finds a young slave boy who resonates strongly with the force and in order to free him from his master the boy participates in a pod race which he wins in dramatic fashion. Upon being freed he then leaves to begin his Jedi training. Or they could just do 2 hours of a monkey sh@itting.

It will never live up to expectations...

Just don't expect the original trilogy of awesomeness. Expect Phantom Menace. That way when it is 10x better than PM you will be very happy with the new trilogy right?

Also, Luke and Han are a MUST (to be played by Mark and Harrison only of course, or nobody at all)

A movie idea

I agree that there should not be a huge galactic menace again if it follows the events of RotJ so closely. Give the universe a room to bread... But you know what would be cool? Having a group of mercenaries, they might or might not be Luke, Leia and Han, and it might or might not include a Jedi within the team, hunt down the remnants of the Empire, like they're some sort of WW2 Nazis hidden all over the galaxy - the team would go to different planets, the criminals would be different creatures

You could even end one movie on a cliffhanger of a Sith temple.

Forget the Thrawn trilogy. The Prequel Trilogy was roughly 40 years or so separated from the Original Trilogy. There's no reason that the new Sequel Trilogy won't be set a significant amount of time after the Original Trilogy.

We could see Luke playing a kind of elderly Obi-Wan character. Perhaps Leia is a wizened senator, akin to Mon Mothma.

I know it's a snowball's chance in hell, but it would be great to see Ford play Solo as a grizzled bearded general. Maybe he could be convinced if he gets the death for the character he wanted in Jedi early on.

At any rate, the best parts of the Original Trilogy are the parts where Lucas' involvement was minimal, so this may actually turn out to be something great. I do think they ought to stop at IX though, and not go into infinity and beyond. If they need to make movies after that, they should start an entirely different story line in the same universe. Maybe do Johnston's proposed Boba Fett Movie. [link]

Revenge of the Jedi

The death of Han could be the catalyst that the movie needs to get going, perhaps his old enemies finally catch up with him and collect a bounty for an unseen gangster which leads Luke to hunt down this mysterious underworld kingpin for his revenge which leads to the discovery of a new alliance forming led by this kingpin.
That way Ford doesn't have to do the movie, Luke and Leia could return along with Chewbacca and the droids and presumably a young padwan for Luke to suck in the younger

I say focus on jedi academy with a group of fresh recruits first learning about the force. Throw in an awesome sith bad guy as well as someone slowly going sith and you got the makings of a franchise right there. Another possibility is try briding the gaps between the two trilogies with focusing on the force unleashed. That had an interesting story especially considering the suggest lore of how the rebel alliance was created. Yeah there is plenty for disney to work with on this franchise. Hell

Another thought.

The Prequel Trilogy was extremely adolescent, particularly Episode I. That doesn't seem to bother 5 year olds though, who watch it and love every minute of it.

The Original Trilogy was a bit more mature, probably aimed at 13 or above.

In keeping with this trend, I would actually like it if the Sequel Trilogy were even more mature. Not NC-17 or anything like that, but with more sophisticated themes on the order of a Blade Runner or 2001. Perhaps dealing with the

In this way, a person could literally grow up with the saga from the age of a toddler all the way to post middle age.

i really think the new film, first one anyway, should have mark hamill play a 70 yr old skywalker who is the head of the new jedi order in a yoda-like fashion training new blood for the past 40 some years ,give or take, and more or less pass the torch for new jedi characters. i understand the novels follow this approach more or less although i've never read any.

Having Luke and Leia's kids go on an even somewhat similar epic adventure trivializes the events in the original trilogy. What, is there an evil empire that needs to be thwarted like every 20 years in this universe? What adventure could they possibly go on that would even warrant a story without making it seem like destroying the Empire was practically pointless?

Actually, yes. Have you ever read or heard of any of the EU storylines? There's always an Empire to destroy in the Star Wars universe. The Empire wasn't even destroyed after Return of the Jedi. Books made sure of that. All it did was create a civil war between rival Imperial naval offices stationed in other parts of the galaxy.

Note: I never said the EU was great.

Frankly, as long as it's been taken out of George "untalented hack" Lucas' hands I don't much care who directs it at this point.
The child in me wants to see it returned to its former original trilogy glory, but the adult in me wants it to die a painful Michael Bay directed death with Shie LeBeouf (sp?) playing Luke Skywalker.

If they gonna recast, which I think they should, Nathan Fillion absolutely needs to be Han Solo. Charlize Theron for Leia and either James Franco or Tom Welling for Luke.
