The main focus of THE RUNAWAYS is the relationship between Cherie Currie and Joan Jett, played by none other than NEW MOON co-stars Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart.

In case you don't know, THE RUNAWAYS were an all girl rock group started in 1975 by drummer Sandy West and rhythm guitarist Joan Jett. Micki Steele served as the bassist until new members were added. A year later in '76, lead singer Cherie Currie and guitarist Lita Ford were added to the lineup. This was one of the most popular hardcore group of chicks to rock out and look just as sexy doing it.

The film is loosely based on Cherie Currie's book, Neon Angel: the Cherie Curie Story. It chronicles the band's stardom, the break-up, her intimate relationship with Jett, acting career, drug use, and many other turbulent occurrences. The cast is made up of a group of interesting young ladies including Scout Taylor- Compton as Lita Ford, Danielle Riley Keough (Lisa Marie Presley's daughter) as Marie Currie, and Alia Shawkat as Robin, who is a fictional member of the group. Helming THE RUNAWAYS is Floria Sigismondi, who is responsible for many amazing music videos (The White Stripes, Marilyn Manson, David Bowie). Joan Jett is serving as executive producer, and is also riding Stewart's ass hard so she gets her rock 'n' roll persona. Today, Apparition picked up the film for distribution and it will release it March 19, 2010.

I'm more intrigued than anything. I still have no desire the see the film, due mainly to my hatred of Dakota Fanning, but it's certainly interesting casting.

And Cherie Currie was only 16 when she was in the Runaways.

I was seeing this te second Floria Sigismondi was announced as the director, her video work (especially her Sigur Ros clip) is awesome.

BTW,

Lita Ford was the lead guitarist for the Runaways, not the bassist. Micki Steele, who later joined the Bangles, was the first bassist before they went with a ton of others. This 'Robin' character is probably the stand-in for all those other bassists.

I'm on the fence about this flick but, it could be cool if Jett and Currie are on board.

I meant to write guitarist. I definitely know that since I've only seen that "Kiss Me Deadly" video played in my house 80 million times as a child.
