Joseph Kosinski's OBLIVION is one of those projects that sounds incredibly badass in my head and yet I have nothing visual to associate with it. Sure, there are several pieces of art created for the graphic novel that OBLIVION is based on, but nothing of the footage that wowed audiences a few months back.

What we do have now are a couple of blurry photos from the set of OBLIVION featuring Tom Cruise looking like a character straight out of THE HUNGER GAMES. Not much can be garnered from these images other than that Cruise will don a beat up leather jacket with a weapon slung on his back.

Plot: Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one mans confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind. Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jacks mission is nearly complete. Living and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

With OBLIVION still a full year away from theaters, we have plenty of time to see the finished product. Hopefully soon we will get to glimpse that CinemaCon footage. In the meantime, I guess I will just have to rely on my imagination to fill in the blanks on this one.

OBLIVION hits theaters July 19, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: JoBlo Triva Challenge: How many times has Tom Cruise played a character named Jack? Post your answer in the comments below. The winner gets a shiny new nickel, minus my customary five cent processing fee.
