First shots emerge of Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow on the Pirates 4 set

Jul. 2, 2010by: George Merchan

Filming on director Rob Marshall's PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES began a couple of weeks ago in Hawaii, and a couple of candid on-set shots have cropped up online, courtesy of gossip site PopSugar.

Below you'll see Johnny Depp Sparrowing it up once more (is it me or has he got a bit of a paunch in that second shot?). Next to him you'll also notice actor Kevin McNally returning as Gibbs, as well as director Marshall himself. Not the most interesting photos in the world, but I guess they're something.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES opens May 20, 2011.

Synopsis: In this action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise, Captain Jack Sparrow crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz), and hes not sure if its loveor if shes a ruthless con artist whos using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Annes Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesnt know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.

Rush reprises his role as the vengeful Captain Hector Barbossa, and Kevin R. McNally returns as Captain Jacks longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs. Claflin stars as a stalwart missionary, while Berges-Frisbey is transformed into a mysterious mermaid.

Extra Tidbit: An adaptation of an adaptation? As we've known, the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN films are based on the Disneyland attraction of the same name, but the fourth film is also reportedly based on the book "On Stranger Tides" by author Tim Powers.

Astrid Berges-Frisbey as a sexy mermaid? I'm in. And Depp does it well, so why not? Without Bloom and Knightly dragging it down this could very well be an improvement. Only concerns so far are the director (I want Verbinski back!) and Barbossa is back AGAIN?! It was a cool twist the first time when he popped up at the end of Dead Mans Chest but lets face it, without his immortality he's just not as intimidating a villain. Then again neither was Davy Jones in my opinion. It was all look.

McShane? McAwesome

Ian McShane as Blackbeard? That is a casting win!

This could be better than the last two pirates given that it's basically pirates minus Bloom and Knightly, who were frankly boring characters.

Excited to see the new film and I just read a short "cliff notes" version of "On Stranger Tides" and seems pretty sweet. Stoked for this..

I want more Jack Sparrow. I love that character and Johnny Depp RARELY makes a bad movie, and if he does, his performances are always AMAZING no matter how bad the movie is.

Depp doesn't just make movies for the sake of making movies. He makes movies that interest him and he feels are necessary.

He WOULD NOT have signed on to this if he didn't feel it was going to be at least semi decent of a movie. Besides, it can't get any worse than the third one...

While I will admit that the second and third movie were vastly inferior to the first, they were still cool fun films and I can't wait for this one. In fact, I actually have higher hopes for this than 2 or 3 because it seems like they might actually have to good stand alone story rather than the awkwardly manufactured trilogy they attempted to create.

Fuck This Movie

The director is a bloody hack that couldn't make a good movie if it slapped him across the face with it's dick.

As a fan of the original trilogy (yes, I like all of them), I see no need for this movie to exist. I think we've seen all of there is to be seen with this character.

Uhhh huh? "Couldn't make a good movie if it slapped him across the face with its dick".

Pretty sure I couldn't make a good movie either if I got slapped in the face with a dick... Let alone when said dick belonged to a... good movie.

Stop trying to be overly clever with taking already-existing, hackneyed expressions ("if it slapped him in the face"). You make NO SENSE.
