First trailer for CW's Green Arrow TV show Arrow shoots online

May. 18, 2012by: Paul Shirey

A trailer for the new Green Arrow TV series, ARROW, has found its way online and features enough footage to either win you over or turn you away.  Based on the DC Comics character Green Arrow, the new TV series follows young Oliver Queen from his very beginning, starting with being marooned on an island where he develops his bow and hood-wearing skills, only to return home to a corrupt city, yearning for a vigilante to dish out some justice.  Of course, he's also a billionaire, which always makes crime fighting a lot easier.  It's definitely a mid-to-upper class kind of gig.  Unless you're Kick-Ass and have a scuba suit and some sticks.

Check out the trailer:

I was a fan of Smallville for a time, but the show eventually got way too bloated in my opinion and turned me away.  Still, I felt that the good outweighed the bad for the most part and it was some pretty solid entertainment.  ARROW looks like it's on the right track, but it's just too soon to tell.  The trailer is intriguing enough to get me to catch the pilot, for sure, but I'm not necessarily hooked just yet. Still, it looks promising.

The show stars Stephen Amell as the titular character, with supporting castmembers Paul Blackthorne, Katie Cassidy, and Kathleen Gati.

Here's the official synopsis to tide you over:

After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific.  When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island.  While Oliver hides the truth about the man he’s become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was.  Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance.

As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow – a vigilante – to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory.  By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be – flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle – while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness.  However, Laurel’s father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city.  Meanwhile, Oliver’s own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on – and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine.

ARROW will play on Wednesdays this Fall on the CW.

Extra Tidbit: If not Green Arrow, which DC character would you like to see in a weekly series like this? I'm still disappointed Wonder Woman didn't take off...Palicki looked great in that outfit, man...

I'd rather have a Batman/Batman characters/rogue gallery television show, where every episode doesn't necessarily center on Batman/Bruce Wayne. Almost like a LOST/HEROES with the Batman world. Simply call the show Gotham.

Birds of Prey is nothing like what I am talking about. Birds of Prey didn't involve Batman, Joker, Catwoman, (yes all of those in glimpses.) there was no one other than Oracle, oh and a piss poor portrayal of Harley Quinn. Birds of Prey was pretty much the bottom barrel of the Batman universe characters, that's why that didn't work. I talking the characters from the sixties Batman show(plus others.) but in a Serial drama not an Action-comedy.

Well of course it'll fail, it has Katie Cassidy in it, everything she's in fails.

It doesn't look that bad and I hope it lasts - I too would really love a live-action Batman family TV series, one can dream, right? I hope we get to see villains such as Count Vertigo and hopefully some Justice League villains.

It's like Batman Begins with really bad acting. The production value isn't that bad but that acting is atrocious.

Is this the same thing Smallville did?

Is the whole series an origin story of how Oliver Quinn becomes Green Arrow much like Clark Kent to Superman in Smallville? Don't know enough about the Green Arrow to tell from this trailer. I always thought it was a cop-out from how Smallville abandoned the whole character development phase from the first two seasons and then started introducing a bunch of people to Clark that he would've never met before he was Superman in Metropolis. Aka Lois, the future justice league people, Braniac,

you know, i read the comments while the stupid commercial was running and i think it looks better than a lot of people are saying. Most make it sound like the Cape! Its too soon to be sure but this looks strong enough to carry itself for a few seasons. i know a lot of people who gave Smallville and Supernatural one or two seasons tops. This may be a winner.

i love GA but i wish this show FELT better. maybe he needs to grow the goatee!! i'm gonna have to check it out before i really judge it.

as far as another DC character to get a show: i think nightwing would be cool but how do you not include the rest of the bat family in that? especially the big guy. plus, there seems to be so many "dark" and "moody" comics shows, why not something alittle more "upbeat" like a return of the flash!?!

and for the record, i thought the new WW look

Looks meh. It's probably played way to serious for a superhero show.

What made Smallville fun was the funfactor. Clark getting new powers every other episode, the silly monster of the week episodes, his relationship with Lex Luthor and the occasional nod to other Superman related characters.

This show looks more like Mike Grell's version of Green Arrow.

The trailer doesn't look bad b/c it focuses on Green Arrow. However, since this on the CW I'm guessing there will too many episoeds dedicated to lame plot lines with the supporting cast that causes me to loose interest, like Smallville did at times.

Seems like the found the other super hero...

...where dark and gritty actually works well.

I'm a little irritated at the nonsensical changes to the surce material (Starling City instea of Star City, dropping "Green" from his name even thouth it's in the costume), but overall this looks pretty cool

I think...

I think that HBO needs to create a comic book series. Because it's fuckin' HBO. Plus they can do whatever the hell they want.

So HBO, just do it.

NOT INTERESTED ...

... looks decent, but when interest in the show starts to fade, they are gonna bring in more superheroes, and then it's Smallville all over again. Warner should really start thinking about bringing Batman to small screen, even though they would need more money for that.

The whole name change with the show title and the city is giving me studio interference vibes, and that is never a good thing. They should of learned from John Carter. Taking Green out of Green Arrow is just dumb. Would they do a Batman movie and not have the city be named Gotham? oh, The first 5 seasons of Smallville was fantastic.

I will have to at least check this out. Smallville was great. It did start to get old but it was still a good show for a long time.

I'm not a Green Arrow fan/expert...and I'm yet to see the trailer as I can't play the video from work...but tell me...is that his disguise...or is he happy to show his face to everyone? The guy in Smallville wore sunglasses...if I recall right (I also thought both his Green Arrow and Oliver Queen sides played out very well. Made me think that they so wanted Bruce Wayne/Batman instead of the Green Arrow).
