First trailer for Relativity's animated pic Free Birds with Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, and Amy Poehler

06.19.2013

The first trailer for FREE BIRDS, the new Relativity Media has gone online, starring the voice talents of Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson, Amy Phoehler, Dan Fogler, Lesley Nicol, George Takei, Colm Meaney, Keith David, Eddie Sotelo, Josh Lawson, and Danny Carey. The pic follows two turkey's who travel back in time to the first Thanksgiving in order to get the bird off the menu forever. Hijinks ensue. Take a look, then we'll talk some history.

Gobble it up!:

Yeah, this looks pretty "meh" to me. Historically, the problem is that turkey wasn't even on the menu for the first Thanksgiving celebration. The other problem is that, now that it is, I don't want these talking turkey's to succeed in their mission. I want them to fail and be eaten. Why? Because turkey is damned delicious and I don't want my yearly roasted bird to be sacrificed because of two talking animated animals. Right, I get it, it's a kid flick. But, I couldn't look my own kid in the eye and tell him that we'd never eat a turkey after watching this in the theater, because we absolutely will. Shit, we may go see this after Thanksgiving dinner. How's that for irony?

Here's the synopsis:

In this hilarious, adventurous buddy comedy for audiences of all ages, directed by Jimmy Hayward (Horton Hears a Who!), two turkeys from opposite sides of the tracks must put aside their differences and team up to travel back in time to change the course of history – and get turkey off the Thanksgiving menu for good.

FREE BIRDS is let loose on November 1, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: Maybe it sounds harsh, but I'm not going to treat turkey's like Santa Claus. I have enough fictional characters to keep alive until my kid wises up. I don't need food to be one of them.

Man, this looks pretty bad.
Plot almost looks like it was written as they went along.

Okay, that sucked

You'd think seeing what Pixar's doing would convince more animated studios to up their game. Apparently not. I suspect this will bomb big-time, and everyone will come up with an elaborate and totally implausible reason why it failed.

And then movies will no longer have the word "Free" in their titles for several years, as studios will believe it'd associate them with this disaster.

The quality of the animation looks several years behind what seems to be the standard, and the trailer makes it look like it pales in comparison to Rio - which was a great animated bird movie.

I think turkeys could make great characters in a kids movie. But not as protagonists. Having actually grown up in a house where, at various times, we raised turkeys, they really are pretty moronic, and only suitable for Minion-like roles. Also, how do you name something Free Birds and not play Freebird during the trailer?

I'm with you Paul Shirey, turkey tastes too good for me to give a damn about any of this.

If this movie ended with the protagonists being served up on a platter and eaten, I think they could turn it around. But, we know that deliciousness ain't gonna happen.
