First trailer for George Lucas' Red Tails soars into action

Jul. 29, 2011by: Paul Tassi

It seems a bit strange that George Lucas is focusing on something like RED TAILS, a new project backed by Lucasfilm and co-written by Lucas himself.

Not that the Tusgekee Airmen, the all-black WWII fight pilot squad isn't a worthy story, but it just seems pretty random, especially considering Lucasfilm doesn't actually do a whole lot of "film" these days.

The first trailer has premiered for the movie which you can watch below. Looks like the exciting parts of PEARL HARBOR with none of the love story (though keeping Cuba Gooding Jr.). But even if I didn't know this was Lucas writing, I'd still say a lot of the dialogue comes off as a bit cheeseball. See for yourself.

Extra Tidbit: Bryan Cranston is the best actor of the bunch here. That is not racist.

Looks fantastic...

Damn is it weird seeing the Lucasfilm logo in front of something that is NOT Star Wars.

Hmm.. it looks ok.. but lets not forget that all 3 Star Wars prequels had PHENOMENAL trailers and wound up sucking donkey dick. This looks to have the same amount of CGI action scenes and cheesy lines.

George Lucas can make good stories for screenplays, but he can't write for shit. Well he use to be good at stories, but that ended after the original Star Wars trilogy.

Misleading title.

I thought for a moment George had finally gotten around to directing a "smaller film".
Looks like a decent film though. This story has been waiting for an adaptation like this for a while. It's certainly worthy of it.

I'd been wary of this project for a while, but seeing some of the finished product there, it looks spectacular. The HBO movie was good, but all the action was old gun-camera footage. To really bring it to life like this is what those guys deserved.

Being an aviation junkie... I can't wait! There's not enough recent films with aerial dogfights.

Stories of WWII fighter pilots are what inspired the likes of Spielberg and Lucas to get into film-making in the first place. I think he'll deliver something truly inspired for us.

This is definitely Saving Private Ryan of Aviation. You even Bryan Cranston as an Army Air Officer. Which he was in Saving Private Ryan, I'm sold. (fuck you lucas for destroying my childhood though)

Looked fairly solid until I saw the release date. How many good films can you name off the top of your head that were released in January? Cloverfield's is about the only one I can think of...

Four Pluses

I shall see this for four reasons. One, Lucas is a master film-maker, and his work deserves always a look. Two, Lucas studied WWII aerial combat footage for some of his best work. Three, Men of Honor was a similar film examining similar subject matter using similar dialogue. So, the dialogue is an acceptable literary convention--in many WWII war movies actually. Four, Red Tails premieres in January, and any movie-goer wants to see something at least decent in January.

Looks surprisingly good. Plus David Oyelowo a.k.a Danny Hunter from Spooks (MI-5) is in it, and anything he's in is solid.

Saw the one that came out in 1997(?) long ago and it was damn good. Don't think this will be as good, due to the dialogue. But other than that, it looks as though Lucas has made a decent film.

It's Cuba Gooding and Terrence Howard and Method Man on screen, but all I'm hearing is Luke Skywalker, Biggs Darklighter, and Wedge Antilles

And without studio demanded rewrites, and a lot of Lucas' friends saying his script was nonsensical, we wouldn't have Star Wars either. Lucas came up with a great idea, but it took people like Irvin Kershner is make it truly cinematic. My friend Antarius makes a great point.

Nice to see Lucas doing something Non-SW related. This looks decent enough, and I don't mind a bit of cheese with my films, :P As many of them do have that element and can still be enjoyable.

It is good to see Cuba again in something other than a straight to DVD flick.

So much of the focus is on Lucas, but lets point out that the director is 'Wire' veteran Anthony Hemingway, and I count no less than four 'Wire' regulars in the cast. Michael, Bubbles, Cheese, and Wallace. We get to watch B'more kick Hitler's ass! Throw in Omar, Snoop, Chris and Brother Mouzone I'll start thinking Dirty Dozen remake.

I'll give this a shot. considering lucas took a lot of inspiration from world war II movies when making star wars (especially when it came to dog fights) im sure this will be visually satisfying and entertaining at the very least. If anything this not being another star wars movie should give people hope considering lucas wont try to squeeze as much money from merchandizing out of this movie as possible.

that was unexpected

I'll be the first to admit that Lucas hasnt been at the top of his game for awhile.... but those dogfights look epic! I had 0 interest in this movie before but that trailer has sold me for sure. They can count on my ticket purchase!

As someone has come to hate George Lucas, I have to say this looks really good. It's nice to see something that has sets, and actors and not just CGI & greenscreen.
