First trailer for Les Miserables with Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman, and Anne Hathaway

May. 30, 2012by: Paul Shirey

The first trailer for LES MISERABLES, an adaptation of the renowned stage play by Victor Hugo, has sung its way online.  Starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham-Carter, and Sacha Baron Cohen, the film is directed by Tom Hooper (THE KING'S SPEECH).

Dream a Dream:

I'm not a huge fan of musicals, but every now and again one slips by.  Tom Hooper is the big sell here, as he has an exceptional visual flair, which you can see in the trailer.  Anyone who can turn a film about a guy giving a speech into an Oscar-winning visual treat is a talent to be reckoned with and it looks like he'll be doing the same with LES MISERABLES.  And I guess the cast isn't too bad, either.

Here's a synopsis:

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption–a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. Jackman plays ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.

LES MISERABLES is set to open on December 14, 2012.

Extra Tidbit: What's your favorite movie musical? I lean towards Chicago or Sweeney Todd, personally.

Holy. Crap.

I got waves and waves of chills while watching this. The Les Mis musical has always had a special place in my heart and I'll be damned if I'm not looking forward to this as much as The Dark Knight Rises.

Wow.

Looks fantastic

Hathaway has a great voice. I think Crowe will surprise a lot of people with his singing, he seems perfect as Javert
Fave musical? "Singing in the Rain", it never fails to cheer me up

I'm liking the visuals so far, especially some of the angles used and Anne Hathaway's vocals actually got me a little emotional. Still wondering if Crowe can hit that low F... and as for the tidbit: Little Shop of Horrors and Rocky Horror Picture Show. Guess I have a thing for horror.

I was so dissapointed with that one, the music was forgettable (overall), the acting was terrible, and the plot was predictable

I agree with Jekkie, Anthony Steward Head's songs were downright inspiring, and I really enjoyed the movie as a whole.

I love how gritty and real this looks. Also, judging from Hathaway's singing it seems like they're getting away from the over-dramatic theatrical-style singing, which I think is a smart move.

Best to distance the singing from the theatrical version as much as you can, since that's what everyone has heard a thousand times. Man, people are gonna be bawling like babies in the theaters. Jackman will be amazing, same with Crowe. Can't wait!

Extra Tidbit: Reefer Madness...it's just perfect and the writers had full creative control.

Wow!

This look pretty spectacular. I know some people had issues with Anne Hathaway's voice but I think it's perfect for this. I like the raw and emotional tone it has. Great for film. I feel this is going to be a stunning piece of work.
Extra tidbit: I did love Moulin Rouge and Woody Allen's Everyone Says I Love You. But I love the old musicals as well as all the new musicals that came out.

Awesome

I love muscials, having songs in it is a great medium to express emotion and joy in a way thats visually and acoustically pleasing. As long as Tom Hoopers at the helm, this can't be bad.

EXTRA TIDBIT: Reefer Madness, Mary Poppins, Lion King

That movie gets a lot of hate, but I really don't mind it all that much. It's a little overblown and self-indulgent and sure Gerard Butler can't sing, but it was lavishly produced and felt grand and operatic.

Not sure if Les Misrables is gonna be a success in America but it is a classic story in France and Europe. And it's a musical to boot. I'll watch on dvd to compare but the 2000 TV series with Depardieux ranks as my favorite so far

HA! One of Broadway's longest running shows and has had like 8 tours in the US. Each theatre seating about 500 a night, SOLD OUT. I think a movie will do just fine in America.

And that's 500 people paying $125 or more. A mere 12 dollar movie ticket won't stop me or many from seeing this and the Hobbit twice each on December 14th.

oh if we're counting animated, Hunchback of Notre Dame. That music is amazing and the German version of the show that made it to the stage has to go to Broadway and then be adapted into a live action movie.

Horrible cinematography. It feels like a TV Movie. Does Hooper not have enough faith in the cast or material? Why all the forced camera work?

As little faith as I have in Hooper as a director - if all the cast sing with as much rawness and power as Hathaway just did, then we may have a winner on our hands.

I'm sure this will be good, though it'll probably end up being the annual obvious Oscary movie I pray doesn't win everything, but inevitably does (see: English Patient, Shakespeare in Love, The King's Speech, Chicago, a million others)

Yeah, but . . .

I am skeptical of one thing, and one thing only: Russell Crowe. Doesn't have the voice for Javert. Yes, he can sing, but he can't growl his way through this one like Gerard Butler did in "Phantom". Go deep resonant bass, or go home.

I totally disagree. You can growl through Javert. Phantom you gotta sing. Butler was a let down, but Crowe will do fine.
