Trailer for Red Dawn remake with Chris Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson begins the invasion

Aug. 10, 2012by:

Well, it's only taken three years to see the light of day, but today we finally have our first look at the remake of RED DAWN, starring Chris Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Adrianne Palicki, Josh Peck, Isabel Lucas, Connor Cruise, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Edwin Hodge. Directed by veteran stunt coordinator Dan Bradley, the film follows the pattern set forth by the 1984 cold war classic starring Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen, with an invasion of the United States by a foreign country.

The invaders of the original film were the Russians, which kind of made sense back then. The remake sees the U.S. facing off against North Koreans, who may be a threat, but certainly not for an invasion. The original "invaders" for the remake were the Chinese, which is actually the most realistic, but seeing as there's a lot of money trading hands, especially in Hollywood, the filmmakers opted to change it up. Ah, politics.

Check it out:

It looks pretty decent and could possibly recapture a little bit of the original's spirit, but it's just so damn unnecessary. Just as I said yesterday with the poster premiere, the cast is an ace in the hole for the studio, since Hemsworth and Hutcherson especially have made names for themselves with two of the biggest franchises in Hollywood. It doesn't hurt RED DAWN's chances of being successful, but it's not a shoe-in, either.

Also, whoever decided that it was time to regurgitate Filter's "Hey Man, Nice Shot" song for this trailer needs to pack away their CD collection for good. Talk about making something feel dated.

RED DAWN invades theaters this Thanksgiving on November 21, 2012.

Extra Tidbit: Dear John Milius (writer/director of the original Red Dawn and Conan the Barbarian)...would it kill you to make another movie?

The plausible part is where the country gets shut down by an emp. An emp blast 5 miles into the atmosphere over the US would essentially shut down the entire countries infrastructure. Thats why we get nervous every time someone besides us decides to launch a rocket into outerspace. The unrealistic part is no country would ever be able to invade the US like is shown. Our military on top of its citizens exercising its 2nd Amendment rights would tear any invading army to pieces. Besides

Another remake that will tank. N. Korea invade US? Really? Did somebody forget to tell the director that this is the most heavily armed country in the world with the most powerful military in the history of mankind? This was the alternative to China? Wow.

LOL @ 2:20 Tech 9. "The most popular gun in American crime. Do you believe that shit? It actually says that in the little book that comes with it: the most popular gun in American crime. Like they're actually proud of that shit. "

Again, having North Korea invade anywhere is just laughable. Look at a satellite image map of that area of the world taken at night. That dark spot on the map with no lights? Thats North Korea. A stone-age economy in the middle of the most booming region on

It would be like the Tusken Raiders taking over Coruscant. Actually wait, I just got an idea for a Star Wars EU novel...

Super Suspension of Disbelief

LoL at U.S. fighting for their freedom and being invaded by North Korea. I couldn't sit through this movie because it's just so mind numbingly implausible. It might have worked with Australia in Tomorrow When The War Began but not the "super power" America. Come on Hollywood, the US underdog angle is getting a little old. This movie is just so unconvincing. They should have just left this one on the shelf.

I hate impossibly ridiculous movies. Like Terminator, The Dark Knight Rises, or Jurassic Park. When i watch a war movie, i dont want the war to be fighting in a place that looks like my home town. When i watch a movie i only want to see something that could actually happen.

The original was not plausible either, and it was pretty popular. Transformers aren't real but they come from outer space to smash major cities. There's no such thing as Thor, Iron Man, Captain America or The Incredible Hulk. Men can't fly...then why even imagine making something called a "Superman".

The truth is, none of those things above are realistic and neither is half the crap that comes out in theaters, but you still watch them because they are entertaining. If you don't want to

And if you are going to read this and be like -- "That's all made up comic-book stuff! They get to make it like that for our entertainment" -- just note that there are many other movies such as The Italian Job or The Oceans series that could happen, but were never realistic and were made purely for entertainment. Hell, that's what movies are, entertainment!

Better yet, look up SOD and read the definition on wiki of who coined the term and what he meant by it. Now think about the movies you listed, compared to the Red Dawn remake and you might see why it fails so drastically. Hint: Red Dawn concept is based on real countries and real military power. It's common belief the US military is one of the super powers. So Red Dawn is leaving it up to the audience to suspend disbelief, whereas it's the filmmakers responsibility to accomplish this task. Thus, SOD isn't achieved and it's the reason for the negative reaction you see on the site.

Could be good but North Korea invading is still laughable. At least with China it would have been more believable.

That being said though it looks pretty action packed.

Excellent tidbit. John Milius is responsible for some pretty awesome cinematic moments. He wrote the Quint Jaws speech about the USS Indianapolis. He wrote pieces of Apocalypse Now, Dirty Harry, and Geronimo: An American Legend. It's also said that Walter from the Big Lebowski is loosely based on him. Pretty awesome. You know what's not pretty awesome? This trailer...

Why is this rated PG-13? And there's no Chinese? [link]

but it actually didn't look half bad.
Possibly unnecessary, but at this point it could go either way.
But it's pretty unanimous that North Korea couldn't do shit here.

North Korea isn't communist. So why is it called "Red Dawn"? Not only that, but communism isn't even a supposed threat to the world. Why did they remake this?

Although we all know that North Korea couldn't do jack-shit here -- the trailer looked good.

People may give me a thumbs down for saying this but I think that it could have the potential to compete with the original. Of course, you can't beat Swayze and Sheen and that's obvious.

I am just happy they cut out the scene where the enemy lands behind the school and the teacher walks out and is like "What's going on here?", before getting shot. That was the worst scene from the original movie

You're all missing the point of the movie

When you watch a Zombie movie, whats the first thing you think of when you walk out of the theater? "What would i do?" How would i survive, what weapons would i use, where would i go, how protected am i in this town if this happened tomorrow? This is the same thing but with a war. Yes it's incredibly implausible, but that what a movie is, it takes the impossible and asks what if it were possible. Its a fantasy i know i've had, and so few movies are about homeland warzones. Most war movies

Most war movies follow soldiers who are trained and organized in a far away land. This movie is about a group of average americans fighting here. Thats something alot more relatable. I was never a big fan of the original because they completely missed that point. The original relied on personal drama and internal group conflict (with a downer ending) and it did it well enough, but not good enough to seperate itself from any other movie that has the same theme. It dropped the ball with the homeland war parts and it made the film generic. This new movie looks like a solid action film. It doesnt have to be perfect in it's set up but as long as the action is good and the story on the whole isnt fill with plot holes (like TDKR) i'll be perfectly fine with it.

First of all zombies ARE.NOT.REAL. If your first instinct is how you are going to arm yourself after watching a zombie flick then you have serious issues. Zombies are basic/lazy symbolism of the 'mindless' masses e.g. when people rush to buy the new iPhone when its released, how everyone spends so much time on [insert: social network] and bug you with invites, etc.

You mentioned there few homeland warzone movies and for a good reason..plausibility. The only reason the first one worked was

The idea of young kids with no proper training fighting but handling weapons against this evil military machine for their country captured the American imagination.

"Hey Man, Nice Shot"

Great song, but still...am I the only one that thinks this needs to be retired from movie trailers? To preserve the sanctity of it? Just my two cents. Also, the trailer doesn't look half bad. If anything, I can't wait to see what Cruise's kid brings to the table. I just hope he isn't as annoying as Jaden Smith.

Sold on Hemsworth. He's proven to be a solid likeable actor, and he makes this look tolerable. As far as Josh Peck is concerned, he'll always be fat on the inside.

Though if there is a scene with a huge crowd of people shouting 'USA, USA' then I may switch off. You never ever the Portuguese yelling 'Portugal, Portugal.' ;o)

Oh Sweet Irony!

On the one hand, this jingoistic, politically incorrect pulp was and remains ill-conceived and shortsighted in today's political climate. On the other hand, I'm a sucker for bad ass patriotic heroics set to manipulative power rock. I'm sold, even if I find it unintentionally hilarious.

Ugh.

Filter? That song is like 15 years OLD!!!!! It's as old as some of the people acting in it!!!

As per the Tech 9 they do shoot well for a little gun and fast too but you get as much of a burst as it takes you to say the word burst. That shot of them firing it would empty the gun. Not very good for anything other than shooting it and running away.

Hmm...I'm still gonna see it, but mainly because of Josh Peck. I believe he has the potential to become a really good actor, but needs more roles. I grew up watching him on Drake and Josh on Nickledon then years later, I saw him in the movie, The Wackness with Ben Kingsley which was actually a decent flick. Josh Peck is definitely a better actor than Josh Hutcherson.
