First trailer for The Big Year doesn't want you to know this movie's about birdwatching

09.07.2011

This trailer for THE BIG YEAR is weird for a couple of reasons. One, what's with the random intro from the film's three main leads? Two, for a film about those three entering what's widely known to bird enthusiasts as an informal birdwatching competition, the trailer sure goes out of its way to never explicitly tell you it's about birdwatching. I mean, I get that birdwatching isn't exactly the most scintillating of topics to turn into a film, but selling it as another BUCKET LIST, or worse, a "profound life lessons" movie is somehow infinitely more boring and insulting.

THE BIG YEAR, starring Steve Martin, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson, opens October 14th.

Synopsis: Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson are at a crossroads -- one is experiencing a mid-life crisis, another a late-life crisis, and the third, a far from ordinary no-life crisis. From David Frankel, the director of The Devil Wears Prada and Marley & Me, comes a sophisticated comedy about three friendly rivals who, tired of being ruled by obligations and responsibilities, dedicate a year of their lives to following their dreams. Their big year takes them on a cross-country journey of wild and life-changing adventures.

It's a film for people over the age of 63...that's what this trailer tells me.

UNFUNNY TRAILER

It is always alarming when a feature comedy can't manage to find a single truly humorous moment to share via its trailer.

I thought the line "Bird fall-out." was a pretty clear indicator as to it being a bird laden movie. And maybe uhm... the thousands of birds shown flying amuck.
I don't know, it's not a total nightmare. Could be good fun.

Yeah, the intro doesn't do anything but take up more space being unfunny. I'd understand a hilarious pre-trailer beat to spice up what may not be the most exciting preview, but this is just dead air.

The intro is actually surprisingly funny, as I usually hate those things. The movie doesn't look exceptional in any way right now, but gotta say, JackBlack and brian dennehy do look like they're related (and not just the waistband).

If I could rewind one actor's career and start over it would def be Jack Black right after High Fidelity.

As for Owen Wilson..im still confused why he is still a draw. I didn't see Midnight in Paris but with the exception of the Wes Anderson films (same film most of the time) and I guess Wedding Crashers, this dude produces shit.

Wont touch Steve Martin because all his past work is better then half the shit coming out these days
