First trailer for the fantasy flick Seventh Son starring Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, and Ben Barnes

Jul. 10, 2013by: Paul Shirey

The first trailer for SEVENTH SON, the new fantasy/action pic based on The Wardstone Chronicles series of books by author Joseph Delaney, has arrived. Starring Jeff Bridges, Ben Barnes, Julianne Moore, Djimon Hounsou, Olivia Williams, Kit Harington, and MAN OF STEEL's Antje Traue, the pic is helmed by Russian filmmaker Sergey Bodrov (MONGOL: THE RISE OF GENGHIS KHAN) and looks to be like a cooler version of THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE with Bridges in the Nicolas Cage role and Ben Barnes in the Jay Baruchel role.

Check it out:

Here's the synopsis:

In a time long past, an evil is about to be unleashed that will reignite the war between the forces of the supernatural and humankind once more. Master Gregory (Jeff Bridges) is a knight who had imprisoned the malevolently powerful witch, Mother Malkin (Julianne Moore), centuries ago. But now she has escaped and is seeking vengeance. Summoning her followers of every incarnation, Mother Malkin is preparing to unleash her terrible wrath on an unsuspecting world. Only one thing stands in her way: Master Gregory.

In a deadly reunion, Gregory comes face to face with the evil he always feared would someday return. Now he has only until the next full moon to do what usually takes years: train his new apprentice, Tom Ward (Ben Barnes) to fight a dark magic unlike any other. Man's only hope lies in the seventh son of a seventh son.

Looks pretty cool to me. It's got shades of many different genre pics/shows, including CLASH OF THE TITANS, HBO's Game of Thrones, and even a little CONAN THE BARBARIAN for good measure. Could be fun or derivative, but from the looks of it, I'm leaning toward the former.

SEVENTH SON will be a Comic Con this month, so look for more details soon, and will debut in theaters on January 17, 2014.

I don't think it will be a success but it's something I like to see on screen!

Could be good. Visually at least it's quite striking. Some good actors in there too. I'm looking forward to more of Antje the warrior woman, and Alicia Vikander is also gorgeous.. Looks more promising than Ripd to me.

Looks beautiful but also like it has great potential to suck. And what's up with Jeff Bridges donning the same facial hair and similar, unintelligble accent from RIPD?

On a sidenote; this reminded me of a slightly similar movie which I absolutely did not expect to like but was quite great (and ripe for the Best Movie You Never Saw column): Solomon Kane.

I still have yet to see Solomon Kane, but I'm dying to catch it. Looks really sweet. Could very well be a contender...

Oh man, definitely give it a go. I am by no means a fantasy fan but I really dug that one. It has a perfect mix of fantasy elements and (tongue-in-cheek) humour, and James Purefoy's "straight" performance is the cherry on top.
I can not believe the lack of love for it; 6.0 on IMDb, 5,9 average on RT.

Purefoy is awesomely underrated. Loved him in Rome. He's criminally underutilized.

I'm going to have to make a mental note to track down Solomon Kane this week...

I'm with everyone here on not knowing what to think. Not familiar with the source material, but it looks like a ton of going on here. Could be a more suited film to teenagers.

No idea what to think. Great cast, looks like it has plenty of good fantasy action, but I honestly cannot gauge the quality of the film. It didn't do a very good job of getting me enthused for it, but who knows, could be a decent fantasy action film. Reuniting Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore also helps. Love that Jeff Bridges is doing all these different kinds of characters lately.

I love a good fantasy film, however, the problem is that *good* fantasy films seem to be rarities. I'm unfamiliar with the books, but this movie seems to have too much going on.

I think in most of these films the fantasy, scale, and action gets so crammed down our throats, it loses its sense of wonder. And too much CGI also contributes to a disconnection between the viewers and the movie. I'll admit I'm a sucker for Ray Harryhausen stop motion creatures! They always seemed to be more

This is getting ridiculous

Jeff Bridges and his old-timey facial hair team up with a rookie to fight supernatural forces? RIPD was already a rip-off of Men in Black and now this is a rip-off of that rip-off. Next, I'd like to see him train Andrew Garfield to fight vampires while sporting a burly Jerry Garcia beard.

No. Just no. This is why people can't take the Action Fantasy movie genre seriously. And can Jeff Bridges do any other voice?

Jeff Bridges seems an odd fit for this kind of movie (unless you count "The Last Unicorn"), but it does have a sort of campy, fun quality judging by the trailer. And Mongol was a visual feast. Coming in January means it likely won't inspire deep philosophical conversations among sober people, but I can't deny the eclectic cast and cool visual effects don't have me at least a little curious.
