First trailer for the platonic parenting comedy Friends with Kids has been released

01.12.2012

I guess I should read the plot breakdowns of films more often, as I had no idea FRIENDS WITH KIDS was a relationship comedy about platonic friends having a baby. I also didn't know this was a thing that people were actually doing in real life.

Anyway, the first trailer for the Jennifer Westfeldt-directed/written/starring film has been released and it immediately feels like a cousin to BRIDESMAIDS thanks to a cast that includes Kristen Wiig, Jon Hamm, Maya Rudolph, and Chris O’Dowd (along with lead Adam Scott, Megan Fox, and Edward Burns). It's also giving off sort of a James L. Brooks vibe, which I like. What do you guys think?

FRIENDS WITH KIDS opens March 9th.

Synopsis: Friends with Kids is a daring and poignant ensemble comedy about a close-knit circle of friends at that moment in life when children arrive and everything changes. The last two singles in the group observe the effect that kids have had on their friends’ relationships and wonder if there’s a better way. They decide to have a kid together – and date other people.

There are big laughs and unexpected emotional truths as this unconventional ‘experiment’ leads everyone in the group to question the nature of friendship, family and, finally, true love.

The name of the movie is perfect.

It literally looks like "Friends" with kids. A little too "nicey-nice" for me, but maybe a renter

I think has potential. It's a very good cast, and the trailer had some funny parts.

And I don't understand what is so hard to understand about the premise. It's pretty simple, two friends are getting older and who want to have a kid but just can't seem to find the "right person" to do that with, so they decide to have one together. I can understand that the plot may seem outlandish to some, but it does happen. I promise it does.

it's like there was a list of romantic comedy plots, and they've reached the end of the book.

... I don't get it

I like the cast, but with 4 of them from Bridesmaids, it kinda looks like a continuation of that in a way. I don't really understand the main plot though, 2 friends have a kid? that's pretty stupid, but Adam Scott is the most underrated straight man of the decade imo.

Agree with comments about Jennifer Westfeldt as an actress but sadly I did like Kissing Jessica Stein so maybe this won't be half bad

Thoughts from someone who saw it

I'm a big Adam Scott fan. Loved him on "Party Down," love him in bit roles like "Eastbound and Down," and am glad to see him getting the lead in a romantic comedy.

Problem is, this movie sucks! The reason they got such a great supporting cast (Jon Hamm, Kristin Wiig, and multiple other co-stars from BRIDESMAIDS) is because the film was written and directed by Jennifer Westfeldt, who unwisely also cast herself in the lead role. She happens to be Hamm's girlfriend/longtime partner.

She happens to be Hamm's girlfriend/longtime partner.

Her acting is robotic; she shares absolutely zero chemistry with Scott (who tries to make the best of a poorly written character); and quite frankly, she's sort of irritating to watch. I also thought she looked a fair bit older than the role.

The whole premise just comes across as completely contrived and unrealistic. Expect to see the Bridesmaids connections fully exploited by the marketing department when this thing finally comes out (it's been in post-production a while) -- but they're just kinda there for no reason. Wiig in particular isn't utilized AT ALL -- at least Hamm has a couple scenes that display good acting chops.

Overall, given the talent involved: a real disappointment. The smugness and wannabe-hip attitude of the film actually sort of grated on me -- I think, surprisingly, one of the only good things about this movie was the fact that Megan Fox actually turned in a decent performance! (For what that's worth...)

Trailer needed to stop

because it is giving the entire movie away. Just give us up to they have a baby together. It does look great - but I wanted to see it already once the first half of the movie was revealed. I had when they do this.

Movie looks like a good dramedy.

The cast is also fantastic, especially Hamm and Scott who need to be in more movies.

Wow....Chris O'Dowds American accent is something eh?....

Still love that man. Movie looks like ass but then I'm not the audience.

Sounds like a stupid premise, and it looks very... amateurish? Hope I'm wrong, because I like all those people a lot.
