First trailer hits for Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story!

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Gareth Edwards Felicity Jones Mads Mikkelsen Donnie Yen Banner

As promised yesterday, the first trailer has been released for ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, and while it is obviously still a Star Wars flick, it seems like the film is going to have a different feel to it compared to the previous movies.

Directed by GODZILLA and MONSTERS helmer Gareth Edwards and starring Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, and Alan Tudyk, ROGUE ONE takes place shortly before the event in A NEW HOPE, and will follow "a rogue band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans."

"What will you do when they catch you?

Great trailer

like the ones for FORCE AWAKENS, it did the job it was supposed to: give us the barest details while getting us pumped for the eventual film. ROGUE ONE is definitely on my must-see list.

As for the female lead thing, it takes a strong man to not feel threatened by a strong woman. It's not hard to see the weaklings in this forum.

Except that there is no female lead issue.

Rather, the issue instead, is that the specific lead in TFA was poorly written, likely leading to this particular female lead being poorly written as well.

Uneducated indeed.

First, I don't agree that Rey was poorly written. That's not a objective fact.

Second, there are different writers here, and the final polish was done by Christopher McQuarrie, who wrote a very compelling female lead in Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation. Even if I don't agree with you, you can't make judgements based on a different writer. And if there is a problem with the writing of a character, studios have shown that they can listen to the fans, even if they don't always do it.

Misogyny Wars

Anyone daft enough to raise a gender issue over these, or any other film, should be force choked.
Women have been stuffed down the proverbial Sarlaac Pit for centuries... I think resetting the balance in any way we can is not only the right thing to do, but the only thing to do.
Funny thing is, most of the dudes who are up in arms over females playing larger and more fleshed out roles in film franchises, probably isn't getting laid. Like, ever. This argument is being waged from the damp

Women are the strongest species, no doubt about it. Is high time we saw this reflected on the big screen.
Go girl!

Whilst I completely appreciate your pro-equality stance, don't then follow that up by making generalised accusations about the living states of misogynists. Sexists aren't all 'parents basement dwelling' sexless folk. Some have done extremely well with their lives professionally or personally, others are married and have kids. You can't generalise people who generalise people. Those kind of narrow minded folk are, sadly, everywhere.

The problem you're having here is that no one is raising a gender issue here. Rather, the issue that they are raising instead, is that these particular female leads in Star Wars since Disney's takeover are poorly written and really just silly, as opposed to the plethora of female leads that have been great over the course of the last 40 years or more.

This whole hating on women thing...

I definitely have an issue with her casting...but it has nothing to do with being a women. My issue is that they made her a young white British woman... seeing as the new trilogy that just kicked off 4 months ago already has a young white British female lead...make her spanish, Black, asian, whatever...or at the VERY LEAST a different accent... it seems redundant...it's not a deal breaker, just sort of a missed opportunity to diversify more...which is ironic because by trying to diversify more

...that said I think the movie looks solid...but it's damn near impossible to touch the hype monster that was episode 7 (which is one rare time that expectations so high were beyond met)... Either way looks like a goodtime!

Looks good. It's lacking the visual flare of The Force Awakens, aesthetically this looks more like the Prequels. Not saying it will be bad like the prequels, the story looks like a great time at the movies, but visually I was expecting more.

Yawn

It looks like any other recent YA movie i.e Hunger Games. This story doesn't need telling except for the cash cow in the corner of the room that needs feeding. The cow's name is Disney.

This looks really cool. It's like a view from the trenches. I'm hoping we get to see Vader dole out some punishment. I mean in the beginning of Star Wars he was fucking pissed so I can't wait to see the look on his face when he finds out about the plans being stolen. Everybody gets a force choke.

I got chills.....

Nice trailer. I hadn't had much interest (other than obviously I'll see it because it's Star Wars related), but now I'm starting to think this could really be cool. It will be great to see a completely different story from that universe.

holy crap that was a great trailer! It feels like a darker tone, maybe less hollywood than some of the previous films. I'm loving what I see so far!

I liked the music at the end because depending on what you are listening for you can hear the Imperial March or the basic Star Wars theme or BOTH.

Looks great, have no problem with the female lead, glad Forest Whittaker and Donnie Yen are in this, that Edwards is directing, and I have no problem with the CGI AT-AT's either. My question is how will they be approaching the title cards for this movie? Will we get the scroll of the previous films, or something different?

Im a bit shocked that this whole female lead thing is hurting some people. There can only be 2 possible leads to a movie - a male or female. Well i guess a droid or alien can be a lead, but then they will be male or female too. There isnt like 30 genders to chose from. Race can play a part i guess, but this cast looks pretty diverse - or is that a problem too.
Anyway this looks like a cool movie so thats it.

It's incredibly ridiculous that people's first thought when seeing a woman as a lead in a franchise movie is "they are cramming feminism down our throats."

Do you have mommy issues? Is that what it is? By your comments you must be early twenties, anyone this stupid has got to be young

RobKong, you're an idiot. Plain and simple.

TFA was clearly a feminist diatribe, Kathleen Kennedy herself went around and bragged about how her story development team was mostly women. And guess what? The result shows. Because we know have little girls punching out stormtroopers that are wearing combat helmets, and that's really, really stupid without regard to the gender of the lead character.

Female leads have been great. Alien and Terminator were awesome, and are 40 years old.

Look, I understand that progressive pea-brains such as yours can't wrap your heads around the notion that strong female lead characters are capable of being poorly written, as in the case of TFA, but then, what can we expect from idiots such as yourself?

Do you have any idea how stupid that actually is? The reason having a strong lead female character is important is BECAUSE OF YOU and similarly small minded children!

They really are trying to hammer in this girl power thing.

The best parts of the trailer are the building of the Death Star, old school Storm Troopers, and the AT-AT's. But this whole thing of forcing a female lead down our throats is not a coincidence. So far, that's two movies of this new generation of Star Wars that wants us to believe women are better at physical combat and mentally stronger than men. Too bad if you don't like my opinion. I don't think all women are weak, I just don't like girl power being inserted in to scenarios that a man

It's weird that you even thought to notice this. It hadn't occurred to me in the slightest that a female lead was a connotation for anything. I didn't even 'realise' it was a "female lead". I just saw a person.

So just having a female lead now equates to girl power? Is this 1950? Are you going to see this movie and scream "get back in the kitchen" the whole time? I love that you think women can't "strategize war theater" and that physical combat and hand-to-hand combat are two different things. Not the sharpest tool in the chauvinist shed are you?

@Bob_Loblaw - It's not odd. I watched the trailer from beginning to end and at no point stopped to think that the lead character was a female, what that might represent, that this is a trend, etc. I just saw a character on a screen, was intrigued what they're story was and what the plot of the movie was, etc. The fact that it was a woman hadn't entered into my thought process, the same way seeing a man leading a movie doesn't make my mind go "This is a male lead, what does that mean?"

Impressive, most impressive....with one complaint

I like what I see so far and think the Cast is probably the best for any Star Wars movie thus far. Hopefully this will clean my palate of Forced Remaken. One complaint. So we're 2 Disney SW films in, and the both have Women as the main Protagonist...I worry that super liberal Disney is going to continue this trend and we'll end up with Bruce Jenner brandishing a light saber before too long. Thumb me down, I must be a sexist, but really I'm a guy and I would just relate better to a male lead

On one hand, this is probably the best cast so far assembled for a Star Wars movie, just in quality and variety. But at the same time, I hope most of these characters meet an untimely end so we don't get a spin-off of a spin-off. Still wish they went with Tatiana Maslany for this.

But I'm still not sure about Edwards... and honestly, little tired of Star Wars hype after living through the daily bombardment last year

Thank you! This is what I've been saying. It's only going to get worse. A Star Wars film EVERY YEAR, this is Disney's plan in making Star Wars a forever franchise. Disney is giving Star Wars the bullshit Marvel treatment by releasing pretty much the same films yearly!

Looks good, but that Death Star alarm siren is incredibly irritating for that length of time. Could have been used more sparingly.

Spoiler: They steal the Death Star plans.

I can already see one of the many Disney spin-off films being "Attack of the Bothans: A Star Wars Story". Spoiler: Many Bothans die!
I love Star Wars, and this does look great, but I fear for the future of Star Wars with Disney making it a "forever franchise". Meaning a Star Wars film every year. Yes, EVERY year. Star Wars will get the Marvel treatment, which will kill off Star Wars for most.

Right. Because releasing an average of TWO movies a year for the past eight years has really killed off Marvel. Those films aren't doing well *at all.* /sarcasm

MrScreenAddict: Clearly your not understanding my point. I'm not talking about the money they rake in. I use to love seeing movies like Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Captain America, but now I'm tired of all of them. Prior to the Force Awakens release, I was excited, but it was EVERYWHERE from September through December. TV, grocery stores, malls, billboards, car ads. It was suffocating. Got to a point where I wanted the film to be release just so things would quiet down. A Star Wars film every year, means this treatment every year. EVERY YEAR until Disney decides to stop, which may never happen! Disney will do what George Lucas never did, they are going to drain out all the life and love people have for Star Wars until people get sick of it.
Just look at bigkevink's comment shortly after mine own. This is what I'm talking about!

Every single MCU movie has been loved by critics and audiences alike, but because you're tired of them that means Disney has officially killed the franchise? Sorry, but your opinion and anecdotal evidence is not proof. I can guarantee you that, outside of your little social circle, both the MCU and Star Wars are doing just fine with the general public.

I can relate to your point. And no, Marvel is not doing everything right, just take Iron Man 2 or Avengers 2 for example. There is a danger that the producers are just spinning their wheel with those franchises, and they go on forever and ever... I´m affraid there will be no overall satisfying experience after a while or the desire to make an actual movie but just one set up after another. Let´s do a spinoff to this and let´s make a prequel to that and so on. There was a closure to this

MrScreenAddict: "Every single MCU movie has been loved by critics and audiences alike" HUH?

"When the battles kicked in, semi-yawn. We've seen it all before". Ebert & Roeper on Thor 2

"Too many tacky 3D effects. And then there's the hard fact that everything old isn't necessarily new again just because the bottom line wishes it so." Rolling Stone Magazine on Thor 2

"The story might perhaps be adequate for an animated film for children, with Thor, Odin and the others played by piglets.

"The story might perhaps be adequate for an animated film for children, with Thor, Odin and the others played by piglets. In the arena of movies about comic book superheroes, it is a desolate vastation." Roger Ebert on Thor

"The lightly derisive, live-action-cartoon tone robs the movie of any majesty, even of the comic-book type, and the many violent deaths of their suitable gravity" Time Magazine on Guardians of the Galaxy

"A film that will surely be popular, given Marvel's marketing might, but one that's woefully short on coherence and originality" Wall Street Journal on Ant-Man.

Marvel films are liked at best. Loved? Hell no! Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, Back to The Future, Jaws, Stanley Kubrick films, The Godfather I and II are all LOVED. Because they did not continue on and on and on and on as an endless series. When the day came that I had to watch spin-off Marvel TV shows (Agents of F**king Shield) to know what the hell was going on in their movies I said "fuck that and fuck Marvel/Disney Studios!".

Of course not EVERY SINGLE critic loves every Marvel movie. I never tried to claim that. But the MCU has yet to have one movie designated "Rotten" on RT, unlike DC or other non-Disney Marvel movies - yes, even Iron Man 2 and Thor: The Dark World are considered "Fresh."

And if you really can't understand what's going on in the MCU movies without watching the TV shows, then I'm sorry but you must be an idiot. They're really not that co-dependent.

Yeah but going back to the original comment, it is somewhat excessive. There's no evidence to suggest things are going downhill at Marvel at this time. Don't think I know anyone personally who was into it at the start who isn't into it now as far as the films and Netflix shows are concerned. Civil War seems to have the majority of people excited from.what I've seen.

No offence but I think the people who are tired of the movies are not true fans and never were to begin with.
To me avengers, superman, Spider-Man, batman etc was part of my whole life. I collected literally 20 comics a month. I never got tired of reading. I don't get tired of watching. It's like soap operas go on forever and the fans of it don't get tired. I still read a comic a day. Not exaggerating.
I don't see much of a difference here.

They have less time to make these "spin off" films. This is what happens when you rush film, after film, after film. Force Awakens started filming in February of 2014, a year and 10 months prior to it's release, not to mention the months prior to 02/14 which were used for writing the screenplay. Force Awakens had the right amount of time needed to do the practical effects. Rogue One will get about a year and 3 months from the time filming started to it's December release. Less time to work on

The Force for Change Ad

How has no one commented about Mark Hamill in the short ad at the end of the trailer? He looks like he is being held captive against his will. He should be blinking code to us to tell us where he is so he can be rescued.

Okay...some cool shots, sure...but does anyone else think that for the first minute, Felicity Jones and the rebel leaders are giving bad performances? It just seems to me that up until the "This December" title card, every line seems so forced. Still hoping for good things from this one, though.

That shot of the tips of the white cape gliding on the water as he(I don't know who that is, haven't looked into it) strides toward the wreckage is rather beautiful.

#StarWarsSoHuman

I thought there was something distinctly "un-Star Wars-y" about this trailer when I watched it, and I think I might have put my finger on at least part of it: Um... where are all the aliens?? Like, am I missing something? I don't see a single non-human character (other than the droids) ... which, I don't know, is just kind of odd for Star Wars.

Hopefully that's not representative of the movie as a whole, but still, weird, right?

Donnie Yen, Donnie Yen, Donnie Yen!

He was the Boba Fett of Blade II. I remember wanting to know so much more about his character. I've been a fan ever since. He can be fantastical with his martial arts, or powerful and brutal. I'm curious which one we will see in this. It is just so cool to see these directors get to play with these toys. George Lucas giving up his universe is the best thing for all of us.

Looks Great!

Awesome! super excited for this, looks great - hope it fares better than Godzilla, although I thought that was a pretty decent movie in itself. The war/battle scenes look fantastic from the glimpse we got.
I've seen some spoilery theories popping up this morning that the Felicity Jones character will end up being Rey's mother who leaves her on Jaaku - pretty interesting, as they definitely look alike and seem to share some space badassery genes

While I'll admit it does look like the "Star Wars Suicide Squad", it looks badass. I'm wondering who was in the bacta tank type thing at 1:18. Seeing as how he/she is guarded by Imperial Guards I'm thinking it has to be someone of importance. Ben Mendelsohn looks pretty amazing the Grand Admiral garb. It was also nice to see Mon Mothma in the beginning and they did a great job of making her look like Caroline Blakiston. Not like I needed any not reason to be there opening night, but this just

First thing I thought: Mon Mothma, cool!!! Then I thought "this feels like a fan film", cinematography and sfx wise. Weren't they going to keep using practical? That Death Star with the laser plate being attached to it, just looked wrong, and don't get me started on the AT-ATs bit.
I went from being really excited to being cautiously optimistic. Hopefully the second trailer will get my hopes up high again.

They're going to use practical on inconsequential background mis-en-scene and minor characters just so they can get street cred on using practical with fanboys. But it'll never be front and center. I sense they've lost the skill to pull off believable practical characters in the modern era.

Awesome and ...

Teaser did it's job --- plain and simple!!!
On a side note, I always laugh at the negative comments .. especailly since it doesn't make sense!

This movie looks great. And for a standalone film in the Star Wars saga, they definitely didn't hold back. Overall, It looks like they captured that old school aesthetic from A New Hope. The cast looks great, particularly Felicity Jones and Diego Luna as our two heroes. Interested to see who the other characters are, particularly Ben Mendelson as the white Imperial Admiral and whoever Forest Whitaker is supposed to be.

As a side, and not to take away from how great this looks, I'm

As a side, and not to take away from how great this looks, I'm interested if there will be any hints dropped in the movie that might tie this back to the new trilogy (i.e. clues to Snoke's identity? laying the ground work for the Knights of Ren, etc.)

okay im gonna be roasted and downvoted like a mofo but.....other than a few awesome shots (Ben Mendehlson as a Grand Admiral)

this looked embarassingly bad. Almost like a Fan Film. I'm usually not an effects or cinematography snob, but alot about this looked "wrong" and "cheap" and i don't mean gritty. I can't place my finger on it.

I will STILL be there day 1 though and I am taking into account that its a teaser.

Also, why is the idea of a "Strong empowered" female character. Someone

Also, why is the idea of a "Strong empowered" female character. Someone who is sassy and want to punch in the face?

Ep7/Elektra/Wonder Woman were all done right.

Jessica Jones / Katniss /This. all done wrong. they just come off as insufferable.

I agree with you completely. And I love Star Wars, including TFA.

The reason that idea of a strong empowered female character is sassy and wants to punch someone in the face, is because that's how modern feminists think men act like, even though in reality they don't.

God forbid that there are enough characters in movies to have women with different personalities in the comic book world. If they aren't at least trying to be sexy, GTFO, right?

Only a couple minor quibbles. But this could be fun as shit.

I hate the slowed down dramatic theme trend so effing much.
Felicity Jones' arrest record seems too realistic and very un-Star-Wars-y.
Her character's age being mentioned in years (because years doesn't make sense in Star Wars, don't give me that BBY shit).
Also some shots look too slick and modern and fan-film-ish.
But I am so down for Ben Mendelsohn as Imperial White Superman, and Forest Whitaker as a crazy person.

Glad I'm not the only one annoyed with the slowed down music trend. Jurassic World and the new Ghostbusters did the same thing.

Oh hell yes! Loved that battlefield shot at the end. This time it's war!!!! The tone feels fresh too. Like we're about to see a new kind of Star Wars. I'm in and then some!

Sweet fucking Jesus...I'm so goddamn excited for this. Even more than I was for The Force Awakens. It has an old-school look and feel to it.
