Five young ladies vie for the hacker role of Salander in David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

07.22.2010by:

Just a couple of days ago, we reported on the newly announced release date for David Fincher's upcoming remake of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, the first story based on the novels - the "Millenium Trilogy" - by Stieg Larsson. In that report, there was some hearsay on the part of Deadline's Mike Fleming that a handful of relative unknowns were supposedly in the mix for the key role of tough and complex computer hacker Lisbeth Salander.

Today, Anne Thompson of indieWIRE is confirming that report, saying that Sony, producer Scott Rudin, and director David Fincher are currently screen-testing their final five: Emily Browning (SUCKER PUNCH, SLEEPING BEAUTY), Sophie Lowe (BLAME, ROAD KILL), Sarah Snook (SISTERS OF WAR, "All Saints"), Rooney "younger sister of Kate" Mara (THE SOCIAL NETWORK, A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET), and an unidentified French actress. Deadline was right in their initial report; They seem to be going the SPIDER-MAN route with their casting of the Salander role. How do you guys feel about these choices?

Thompson also adds, in regards to the role of journalist Mikael Blomkvist: "Daniel Craig, who is the studio’s first choice to play muckraking journalist Mikael Blomkvist, could fall out if the studio can’t live with his availability issues. Both Craig’s still-delayed James Bond sequel and Cowboys & Aliens can demand his services whenever they want him. And he needs to be ready and able if The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo does well enough to spur two swift back-to-back shooting of The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest."

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO opens December 21, 2011.
Extra Tidbit: Ironically, actress Sarah Snook also stars with Emily Browning in Julia Leigh's upcoming sex-drama SLEEPING BEAUTY, a film we reported on back in February.

Browning, Browning, Browning

Assuming they actually want someone with a modicum of acting ability, that is pretty much THE choice they have (out of that list)

Her 15 year old self stood out as one of the very few redeeming qualities of A Series of Unfortunate Events.

I honestly just hope Fincher can turn out a better film than the original. That film was so overhyped it's disgusting. That film has the cheesiest dialogue and the plot of a Law & Order episode. Fincher's light years ahead as a filmmaker than the people behind the original. I'm usually weary of American remakes, but this is one where there's definite room for improvement.

I must not watch enough crap tv because i thought it was brilliant.

And while we're talking overhyped and disgusting, how about your clear love for Breaking Bad ... Holy crap that second season was the worst protracted cock tease and let down (with the "incident" at their house) ... so tangential, so stupid to tease it all season ... THOSE are the writers that should be ashamed.

Furthermore, did it occur to you that the translation might be the cause of the "cheesiest dialogue" in your mind

Finally, the only good thing about it was the girl? Actors arent only good because they are playing badasses ... the cast is flawless, just like the direction, photography and lighting. You seem to have good taste in your movie lists, but im sorry, holy crap you missed the ball on this one.

And thats not even mentioning its dense-as-fuck, 100 percent flawless mystery, and the immensely seedy world it revels in....

I love Fincher, but how can this be a good idea? With as many scripts as has jammed underneath his office door, I wish he would tackle something that hasn't been adapted well to the screen only the previous year and all 3 of the books being already made. If they weren't good, I could understand, but they're decent movies. And it's not a mindbendingly good story to warrant a redo. It's "Hard Candy" vengeance with a dose of emo female empowerment and political intrigue.

I kind of agree, while it is surely a road to success as many american audiences dont watch foreign films, and this is a great property, I would like to see him doing tackle something thats hasnt been adapted to film, let alone adapted so well.

If America would rid itself of the (generalised) "I go to the movies to watch, not read" issue, then i'd agree.

Sadly even none American English language films suffer in the US, except a few stand out examples. They remade the British movie Death At A Funeral only three years after it came out!!

I would also say Noomi Rapace, if

she was willing, but Emily Browning seems like the best choice of this bunch. Gotta say that Dakota Fanning's been impressive in her last several outings, Coraline and Push in particular.

Anyone but Rooney Mara. This chick needs to retire from "acting" right now. She's the cinematic equivalent of a bag of rice. They need to cast someone that draws people in, because as interesting as this book series sounds or whatever (and the film) I just don't see it having DaVinci Code-like appeal.

Eww... none of them. They all look like runway models. They wouldn't be convincing as the emo-lesbian-biker Lisbeth.

I'd like to know if any of these girls have even seen the original film and still want the role. Unless major compromises have been made with the character, that would separate the wheat from the chaff in fairly short order.

Browning!

If I had my way, I'd like Natalie Portman or Kiera Knightly. I say Kiera as she has the right build (see Domino)
I love the Original (watched it this weekend) It'll be a demanding role for whoever gets it.

I'm all for Rooney Mara, say what you will about her acting in the nightmare remake, but i thought she pulled it off. and the social network looks good so i think she will be great in this

Emily Browning would be good

Hopefully they don't go with the girl who played Nancy in the terrible Nighmate on Elm Street remake, she was god awful in that. Don't think she can handle a more complicated character like Lisbeth.

Ideally it would be Noomi Rapace, but she doesn't want it. Frankly I'm unmoved by this list, except to say... for the love of all that is holy, not Rooney Mara. Did anyone see the NOES remake?

Yep.

She certainly acted…If acting is considered talking in a monotone voice for an entire film with no emotion.
