Face-Off: Batman Begins vs. Casino Royale

11.04.2015by: Brian Bitner
SPECTRE hits theaters this weekend, and while not all the reviews are stellar, most people are having fun with 007's latest adventure. After the last couple Pierce Brosnan movies, the Bond franchise sorely needed a makeover, which we got in the form of Daniel Craig and CASINO ROYALE. Similarly, Batman had become a punchline in the late 90's after Joel Schumacher's BATMAN & ROBIN... that is until Christopher Nolan helped change the face of comic book movies with the impressive BATMAN BEGINS. Between the second season of Gotham, Batman: Arkham Knight, and hype increasing for both SUICIDE SQUAD and BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE, it seems you can't go a day without hearing Batman related news. Whether you're on the side of spies or superheroes, there's no doubt CASINO ROYALE and BATMAN BEGINS revitalized two suffering franchises, so this week it's the battle of the gritty origin story reboots. Begin!
LEAD
Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne aka Batman
Daniel Craig as James Bond aka 007

Okay, I'm not even going to try to choose between these two. The characters are two of the most iconic heroes to come out of the 20th century, and hopefully we can all agree that both actors were very good choices and delivered solid performances.
SUPPORTING CAST
Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth
Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox
Gary Oldman as Jim Gordon
Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes
Liam Neeson as Ducard / Ra's Al Ghul
Cillian Murphy as Dr. Jonathan Crane / Scarecrow
Tom Wilkinson as Carmine Falcone
Judi Dench as M
Giancarlo Giannini as Rene Mathis
Jeffrey Wright as Felix Leiter
Eva Green as Vesper Lynd
Mads Mikkelsen as Le Chiffre
Simon Abkarian as Alex Dimitrios
Caterina Murino as Solange
LOVE INTEREST
Rachel isn't so much a love interest as a constant thread throughout the story keeping Bruce's conscience in check and helping to ground him in reality. She's a solid character, and her refusal to take things further with Bruce until Gotham no longer needs Batman is a nice touch.
Vesper Lynd is the linchpin of the Bond reboot. Not only do her wit, prowess, and fragility cause James to lose all interest in MI6, but the truth of who she is gives us an incredible amount of insight into Bond's character (say what you will about QUANTUM OF SOLACE, but I love that it's a movie dedicated to Bond dealing with his emotions rather than just ignoring Vesper ever happened).
ORIGIN STORY
BATMAN BEGINS takes an incredible amount of care to explain how and why a person could become a masked vigilante. The scenes with Bruce as a young boy are contrived and not terribly well-acted, but the trial with Joe Chill and the conversation with Rachel afterward, the League of Shadows, and Bruce's relationship with Lucius Fox go to great lengths to believably show the source of the no-kill rule, fear as a weapon, the batsuit, the gadgets, and the need for an alternate form of justice.
As above, CASINO ROYALE gets a ton of points for giving us an origin story we didn't know we needed. James Bond has become so famous for his cold and promiscuous nature that it was just an accepted part of the 007 mythos. Showing a Bond truly in love and stripped of his armor- and then taking it away from him in a particularly scathing move- allows us to empathize with a character in a more significant way than ever before.
DIRECTING
Christopher Nolan went from acclaimed auteur to master filmmaker with this film, raising the bar and setting a new tone for comic book movies and action movies in general.
Martin Campbell's direction is solid here, but the action hits some over-the-top moments, and the "hey look it's a James Bond movie" moments can be a little grating.
QUOTES
"I'm Batman."

"Why do we fall sir? So that we can learn to pick ourselves up."

"A vigilante is just a man lost in the scramble for his own gratification. He can be destroyed, or locked up. But if you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to an ideal, and if they can't stop you, then you become something else entirely."

"I know the rage that drives you. That impossible anger strangling the grief, until the memory of your loved one is just... poison in your veins. And one day, you catch yourself wishing the person you loved had never existed, so you would be spared your pain."

"It's not who you are underneath, it's what you do that defines you."

"Bats frighten me. It's time my enemies shared my dread."

"I won't kill you... but I don't have to save you."

"Does it come in black?"

"This is your mask. Your real face is the one that criminals now fear. The man I loved - the man who vanished - he never came back at all. But maybe he's still out there, somewhere. Maybe some day, when Gotham no longer needs Batman, I'll see him again."
"The name's Bond. James Bond."

"Made you feel it, did he? Well, you needn't worry. The second is-"
"Yes... considerably."

"So you want me to be half-monk, half-hitman."

"You think of women as disposable pleasures, rather than meaningful pursuits. So as charming as you are, Mr. Bond, I will be keeping my eye on our government's money - and off your perfectly-formed arse."

"I'm sorry. That last hand nearly killed me."

"Vodka-martini."
"Shaken or stirred?"
"Do I look like I give a damn?"

"I'm afraid that your friend Mathis... is really my friend Mathis."

"Now the whole world's gonna know that you died scratching my balls!"

"I have no armor left. You've stripped it from me. Whatever is left of me... whatever is left of me, whatever I am, I'm yours."

"You don't trust anyone, do you?"
"No."
"Then you've learned your lesson."
FINALE
Gotham is overrun by fear while Batman tries to defeat Ra's Al Ghul and stop the train from carrying the microwave emitter to Wayne Tower. Scarecrow rides around on a horse, Rachels protects King Joffrey from thugs, and Batman takes care of the train and Al Ghul in one fell swoop. It's a solid finale, and the moments depicting how people see each other through fear goggles are particularly noteworthy, but it's just not as memorable or impressive as many of the earlier moments in the film.
In a Shakespearean twist, the main villain Le Chiffre is unceremoniously shot by Mr. White, leaving James and Vesper free to travel the world. The real finale hits when Bond learns Vesper's secret, and the ensuing shootout, building collapse, attempted rescue, and subsequent suicide leave Bond a changed man. The action itself is fairly standard, but this one gets the edge for disposing of the villain early and letting the tragic love story become the real catharsis of the film.
ACCOLADES
IMDB: 8.3
Rotten Tomatoes: 85% (audience score: 94%)
Metacritic: 70 (user score: 8.6)
IMDB: 8.0
Rotten Tomatoes: 95% (audience score: 89%)
Metacritic: 81 (user score: 8.3)
IT'S A TIE!
This really comes down to whether you're a Bond person or a Batman person. BATMAN BEGINS is darker and probably the better film from a technical perspective, but CASINO ROYALE is more fun and watchable while still being impressively sobering for a Bond film. I'm interested to hear whether any of you consider yourself more of a Bond fan but prefer BATMAN BEGINS or vice versa. The same goes for those of you who like both characters equally- which film was better for you? Are you more excited to see SPECTRE this weekend or BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE in March?

Agree? Disagree? Which do you prefer?

Casino Royale by a landslide

I really, really, really like Batman Begins. I grew up a huge Marvel fan and while I liked some DC characters I was never a Batman fan and didn't like any of the movies in the original series. As a result, I didn't see Batman Begins until one of my friends dragged me to the dollar theater to see it a few months after it came out. As soon as I say the Joker card at the end I couldn't wait for the sequel and then I realized that Nolan had done the neigh impossible... he had made a movie that I

As soon as I say the Joker card at the end I couldn't wait for the sequel and then I realized that Nolan had done the neigh impossible... he had made a movie that I immensely liked about a franchise that I was completely biased against. So yeah, I like Batman Begins a lot, I quite possibly even like it more than Casino Royale but holy smokes, I have rewatched the entire Bond series the last few times a new movie has come out and it blows my mind how anyone could ever feel that anything but Casino Royale is the best Bond film. It is serious The Dark Knight of that franchise -- the absolute epitome of what I think that franchise is capable of. Every time a new a Batman film is announced I always hope that it will top The Dark Knight, even though I honestly don't expect one ever will (although I hope that some day another one may match it). I feel the same way about Bond and Casino Royale.

Bond.

Been awhile since I've been able to comment on here. Casino Royale for me is the better movie. I guess I may just be more of a James Bond guy even though I do love Batman. Batman Begins is a solid movie, however I can never manage to make it all the way through without falling asleep. Casino Royale for me brought Bond back to the center stage.

I saw the two movies involved and my first thought was "There's no way I'd be able to choose." They're both iconic characters, both origin stories, both have great stories and action, and while BB rebooted its franchise, CR revitalized its own. Both great movies; two which I've seen countless times since their release.

Batman Begins had a bigger influence

The Dark Knight often get credited as one of the most important superhero movie ever but Begins is where it started and its influence is undeniable. While Bryan Singer had to keep the X-Men franchise real because of a small budget, Nolan clearly did it by design, which changed how many people viewed the genre.

If I may have issues with the movies that followed, I agree that Casino Royale was a great film but let's be honest: the real game-changer of its genre was the Bourne Identity. CR did

Casino Royale- By far and large- Easy

I like Batman Begins a lot. I love Casino Royale. And when they're on TV I never turn Batman Begins on, maybe every once in a while. But when Casino Royale comes on I can almost always watch it. I just feel Craig is a better Bond than Bale is a Batman. Eva Green is as sexy as any woman especially in that purple dress OMG! Batman has Morgan Freeman and other notable actors but Casino Royale is constantly debated as the greatest Bond of all time as well as Craig the best Bond. So for me its an

If you're more a Batman franchise fan in general than I can see your point because they're both good but then again I'm usually right so there is that. Thumb me down it makes me smile and even more negative comments do too!

Also the opening chase scene in Casino Royale beats any action sequence in Batman by far. Just another reason.

Casino Royale - EASY

Batman Begins was a pretty bland movie overall. I left the theater feeling pretty underwhelmed however when I watched Casino Royale I was blown away by the sheer grittiness and visceral fully immersive film I had just watched.

Sure Begins had a pretty decent cast, but so did Casino. Bond wins this hands down.

Batman Begins by a large margin. It was a game-changer in the comic book genre, and everything about it is perfect. Casino Royale, while a good film, is not even the best Craig Bond film [Skyfall].

Casino Royale won RT Critics, Metacritic Critics.
So based on the criteria you chose to use for accolades, this point should have gone to Batman Begins.
Then again, if you add up all the scores on each side (turning IMDB and MetUsers into percentages) and take an average, Casino Royale

Yeah, I look less at at who won each category and more at how much they won by, so while BB wins IMDB and the user scores by a small margin, CR wins the other two by a large margin. Open to suggestions of other ways of handling this category, though!

The users' scores aren't as reliable as the critics' scores. Since C.R. won the critics' scores, I'd say it's fair that it won the Accolades section.

I enjoyed both, but I definitely preferred Batman Begins. Casino Royale was a good film, but Skyfall was a better film which could easily crush Batman Begins.

CASINO ROYALE: 8/10
BATMAN BEGINS: 9/10

By the way, I thought that the Accolades section had to include award wins and nominations.

-BB: Golden Schmoe and MTV wins; Oscar, BAFTA, Empire, People's Choice, Razzie and Teen Choice nominations
-CR: BAFTA, Empire, Golden Schmoe and Saturn wins; Grammy nomination.

The public voting awards aren't as prestigious, but if they're popular and/or televised, they're relevant. Actually, BB won the MTV Movie Award the year before it started to become a joke (awarding average and bad movies). Since 2013, it's been a good award show again.

It depends on the movies. If we're doing Oscar-y movies, then awards come into play more, but movies like this not so much. Out of curiosity, what kind of stuff would you have included? There are so many awards out there, it's hard to know what to include (other than the huge ones, of course).

Casino Royale for me. While Batman Begins is great, it's nice to see an emotional side of James Bond. He isn't just super spy but also a human being as he cared for Vesper and comforted her in the shower after the fight with some thugs in the hallway. And Casino Royale brought James Bond into a new era after a very over the top Die Another Day.

C'mon it shouldn't be a tie. Choose one.

The reason you have a face-off is to see who really wins, not a tie. Batman Begins wins for me because it's Batman trained by ninjas. Casino Royale is...strange. Most of the scenes involve playing cards, and a torture scene involving... black and blue balls? Is that supposed to explain why he has a lot of women but no offsprings? Why is this movie such a fan favourite?

Batman Begins Hands Down. I remember walking out of the theatre thinking 'yes finally someone gets Batman' I still think it is the best one of the trilogy because of encapsulating what Batman is about.

Yeh , although I appreciate the Tim Burton ones, There are certain scenes in Begins that are in my opinion quintessential Batman. Batman hanging off buildings while doing detective work. The scene where he rappels up the back alley after being burnt, hiding in the shadows, and Cillian Murphy as the scarecrow. Genius.

Both are Amazing BUT

Batman by a landslide for me. I remember being in theatres expecting an ok Batman movie after the underwhelming Batman and Robin (He is my number one comic book hero etc). Halfway through the movie I was pulled out of the movie by how EXCELLENT the movie was. Everything came together perfectly, the story, acting, the music, the direction EVERYTHING. It was so good it BROKE my suspension of disbelief and I thought to myself. "What am I watching here? This is SO SO SO Fking GOOD!" No movie has

These are probably my two favorite heroes from cinema. I got to say though its hard to say which franchise was in more dire straits when these movies came out. Bond had just had a movie with a fucking ice castle and an invisible car. (How the fuck did they waste Rosamund Pike as a Bond Girl on that movie) Batman had come off Batman and Robin - the travesty of fake nipples and Batman credit cards. Spiderman 2 was blowing minds and Bourne dominated the spy genre. I think this is a justified tie.

It wasn't only a comeback but was one of the best in the series. Begins is good, very good, but with how many great Bond movies Casino Royale had to beat out, gotta give it the nod.

Casino Royale

You should compare how good they are in each of their respective series. While Casino Royale, over time, is becoming, arguably, the best Bond film ever made. Batman Begins isn't even regarded as the best in its trilogy and it could be argued that it's 3rd, at best, in the series as a whole.

Very disappointed that you didn't choose one or the other. Seems like a cowardly way out of a face/off. Castor Troy would not approve.

Your argument that BB should lose points because it's not the best of the trilogy doesn't really work. It's all to Christopher Nolan's credit to have made a better follow-up and it doesn't make Begins a lesser film.

Full disclosure: I went into this expecting to give it to Batman. Upon rewatching both and starting to write this column, though, I was impressed by Casino Royale in some ways I hadn't appreciated before, so it genuinely ended up being a tie for me. I agree ties aren't great, and I don't give them lightly.

Of course, since you can't please everyone, when I did Ripley vs. Sarah Connor and gave it to Ripley, at least one person said, "it should've been a tie!" Haha. But duly noted, and I'll be

I liked the idea of comparing two films that revitalized franchises that used to be well regarded but sort of fell off the wagon, plus they came out about the same time. I agree though, should have called a distinctive winner.

Batman Begins

Batman Begins for sure. I remember how refreshing, exciting, and inspiring it was to FINALLY see another great Batman film after the disapponting Batman Forever, and abysmal Batman and Robin.

Plus I love a great origins film and this film did a wonderful job of making Batman relevant again.
