Ford for Indy 5

09.14.2009

Didn't want the last film for Indy to be CRYSTAL SKULL? Well it won't be. Harrison Ford will take on the role again for INDIANA JONES 5.

Well, as long as it's good of course, "The story for the new Indiana Jones is in the process of taking form. Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and myself are agreed on what the fifth adventure will concern, and George is actively at work. If the script is good, I'll be very happy to put the costume on again." Honestly, I've been scared to watch the last JONES film. When I was younger, I adored Indy, especially TEMPLE OF DOOM. I know that one day I'll get bored and watch it on Netflix though.

What's insane is that Ford will be seventy years old in the next three years. It just doesn't seem like he's that old. Indy's son Mutt played by Shia LaBouef has only just begun he says, "Steven [Spielberg]'s just said that he's cracked the story."

Can you imagine Shia doing solo Indy's after Harrison Ford steps down? It's strange imagining anyone else cracking that whip. As for JONES 5, will we get the opportunity to have Connery back? Man, I hope so.

Extra Tidbit: Nick Nolte, Steve Martin, Chevy Chase and Jack Nicholson all turned down the role of Indiana Jones.

just as long as george and spielberg leave E.T at home

im up for another indy so long as it doesnt have aliens and sticks to the original formula of having a relic with some unexplained/ kinda mythical property sourounding it. indy 4 was good but i didnt need to see the aliens, their ship, or have indy's old friend explain everthing to the Nth degree. shia im ok with so long as he stays as a support and doesnt over shadow indy. give him a shovel or something and let indy do his thing because he may be getting older, but he still knows his stuff.

No Shia, and I'm down.

This would be great if Shia wasn't coming back. Whatever happened to having seperate adventures? Doing an Indy V that had nothing to do with Crystal Skull would the best and traditional way to go. Don't think it should be another father/son story again. It'll probably be the last film, so why not Indy by himself, similiar to how it was in Raiders? Bring it all full circle?

I'm in favor of a separate adventure. As much as I like Marion, it would be better if this wasn't a "family adventure."

Agreed. That's why it's always confused me that people refer to it as a trilogy. To me, a trilogy is one story spread out over three films. Each Indy was, like you said, a separate adventure. It'd be blasphemy to make it a straight up sequel.

That is another thing I didn't like about Crystal Skull. I didn't like how it connected the story to the other films. I just rolled my eyes when they showed the ark at area 51.

Brer B8A, I thought the Ark was a cool reference because it had no importance to the story. Just like when you see a drawing of it on the wall of the catacombs and Crusade and they just comment on it.

Common Knowledge

The odd number indys are awesome Nazis boulders and sean connery. The Even numbered ones had short round, shia and UFO's. This one is going to be awesome. Count me in.

I agree with Short Round, it should be set before KOTCS. I remember being sat in the cinema, and that part where they talk about Indy's awesome war record I just thought "man, I wish I was watching that movie!"

I don't think Lucas was entirely to blame for KOTCS. His original pitch was an all-out alien invasion movie starring Indiana Jones, which personally I think would have rocked, but Spielberg claimed he was done with alien-themed movies, and we didn't need another alien invasion movie

So they compromised. And then Spielberg goes and makes an alien-invasion movie called 'War of the Worlds'! He must have a short memory...

Maybe if it really is a good script they can coax Connery out of retirement. Let's face it, we now know why he turned the last film down: the script sucked and his part was merely a cameo. Connery was a gentleman about it and issued a statement for fans saying he was enjoying his retirement too much to do it. If they wrote him a really good part perhaps he could be persuaded.

Before would be cool, because I would actually like to see more of the Mac character. Why not get Mac and Sallah in the same flick?

The biggest problem with KOTCS was, and I'm pretty sure most of us already know this, George Lucas. If you watch the special features on the DVD it's very evident that Lucas was not going to budge on using the Crystal Skulls and having aliens in the flick, even despite Spielberg's reluctance to include them (I was also disheartened to learn it was Spielberg who shot down the idea of Indy having a daughter), which is basically what happened with Temple of Doom. Don't get me wrong, I love

Don't get me wrong, I love Temple of Doom and I don't despise KOTCS, but they are definitely the weaker of the films (TOD is above KOTCS in my book, for the record). But, I'm hopeful that Spielberg will give us another Last Crusade to follow KOTCS, or Temple of Doom Part Deux if you will.

That said, I do have some ideas for Indy 5:

--Set the story a few years before KOTCS, thereby solving the problems of including Mutt and Marion again. I love Marion, but I didn't like how she was reduced to a grinning idiot in 4. And Mutt, well, I'm not a Shia hater but the only recurring sidekick Indy should have is Sallah. Plus, they had already done the father/son thing in Last Crusade. Even though it was Indy in Henry Sr.'s shoes this time, it still felt rather redundant.

--As previously mentioned, bring Sallah back. And you know, I actually wouldn't mind seeing Short Round again.

--Let the film focus mainly on Indy. I agree with Brer B8a, there were too many useless characters in KOTCS.

--Don't be reluctant to let Indy crack his whip. In fact, I'd like to see a fight sequence where he uses the whip. Like they originally intended to do with the Swordsman in Raiders.

--Go back to using practical effects. Save the CGI for the artifact showcase at the end, and ONLY THEN.

--Bring back Lawrence Kasdan to write the screenplay. Keep David Koepp FAR away from this.

--This was suggested to me by a friend of mine: Gary Oldman as the baddie, Jean Reno as Indy's main sidekick.

There's my two cents.

I'm always down for more Indy even after the last one. What killed the last one for me was that there was too much Mutt and not enough Indy and of course the cgi. I think I'm in the minority when it comes to the alien thing. I always thought that it didn't matter what Indy was going after or what it had to do with, it has always been about the character so the aliens didn't bother me at all.

My philosophy on the alien issue is "are aliens any more ridiculous than the power of God?" The only real criteria for the force at the end it is it powerful and kills the bad guy. Doesn't matter if it is aliens, God, or Khali mah (or whatever).

They'll learn...

...from their mistakes I hope. I will never turn down another Indiana Jones movie. Everybody knows Lucas was responsible for Crystal Skull and that is why it was so sub-par. If he can just take the back seat and compromise with Spielberg (like the original 3) then it'll be fantastic! I've even heard rumors of animated films which I think would be great as long as it had Ford doing the voice-overs. Hate to say it but if done right; that would be great IMO.

From Doom's Temple To Doom Town, Indy Rocks!

Indiana Jones is my favorite film character of all time. It's popular to throw hate on the second and fourth films, but I love 'em all. In fact, Temple of Doom is not only my favorite Indy adventure, it is my favorite film period. I think the 'Doom' adventure best represents what the character and film series is all about: An action hero molded after the great B-action serials of the 1930's and 1940's. I've never understood how film critics and audiences alike can dismiss such a fun, dark, and action-packed film. Still, the negative reaction is hardly surprising considering the film's own director, executive producer, and star throw it under the bus every chance they get. Such a shame that Spielberg called 'Last Crusade' his apology for 'Temple of Doom'. Well, while you are my favorite director and a cinematic rockstar, Mr. Spielberg, apology not accepted. Never apologize for your work, especially a masterpiece in dark pulpy fun like 'Doom'.
As for Indy 5, I can not wait! News like this is why I visit sites like the always awesome joblo. I enjoyed 'Crystal Skull' immensely and hope the three amigos will give us a full trilogy of Indy's adventures in his later years. It is awesome to watch the character grow from his first adventures as a child and teenager in 'The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones' all the way through his 30's, 40's, 50's, and 60's. Thank you, George Lucas, for giving the world its ultimate action hero!

i dont think people dismiss TOD, they just say it ws theyre least favorite of the original 3. and i do think people say they dont like simply because spielberg says it was his least favorite. i think its the most entertaining as it never stops with adventure after adventure, and not a lot of discussions.

It'll probably happen

i mean, the only thing it needs is a "good script"... and they all though KOTCS was a "good script" so i guess the bar isn't that high.

on the fence

no aliens, no jokes every 2 minutes, and no shia lebouf. When you think of great action stars, you think of arnold, ford, stallone, willis, statham, etc. since when has shia lebouf become this generation's action star. what a pussy way to describe our generation of movies.

Jokes every two minutes? I'd say Crusade was the most joke heavy of all 4 and its my second favorite. If Indy 4 had issues, I don't think humor was one of them.

For a writer here, you sure have NOT seen a lot of films. Jeez. Anyway, I'm down for another Indy depending on story as well. I really feel this last Indy flick was a good adventure movie even with sci-fi undertones b/c they pay homage to the era it takes place in. KOTCS is a solid flick, minus maybe 3 little bits it can go without.

I'm all for another Indy movie as long as
Ford is in it (Another Indy franchise with LaBouef as the lead is a terrible idea). I actually really digged the last one. Sure I had a few complaints (the aliens, swinging monkeys, fridge, etc.), but overall it really had the feel and excitement of an Indy flick. I thought it was a lot of fun.

Frankly, I'm always down with watching Harrison Ford do Indiana Jones. I was really let down by the last one, but it had more to do with a lack of inventiveness, as I kept seeing deja vu from prior entries, and from lesser films like "The Mummy." But Ford still brought it. And so it wasn't a complete waste.

Do we need another? No, but I will forever believe there are still adventures to be had with the good Doctor Jones.

So this comes after the Crystal Skull - and we all know what happened at the end of that one - Which leads me to believe that we will all finally know how he became Han Solo in this new one.
Brilliant

Not THAT bad

Crystal Skull was not as bad as people made it out. Harrison was still awesome as Indy, I never thought twice about his age or anything. With the removal/adjustment of just a couple scenes (Shia and the Monkeys, CGI Ants) it would have been a real solid movie. The biggest complaint I heard was the Aliens - either you bought into that or not. They should send Indy back after a religious artifact and it'll work.

Sure, it was a shitty movie but you still should have seen it since it's basically your freaking job!

Oh - and spoiler alert - Sean Connery's character is dead. At least according to INDY IV.

1. being an expert in something does not require you have a perfectly exhaustive knowledge in that entire field. That's absurd.

2. Sean Connery was shown in an old photograph with wistful music in the background and an ambiguous comment from a side character. That's not "dead" that's "Sean Connery didn't want to be in this one, and probably won't be in any of the others, but if the script is good and he's in the right mood, there's still room for him to change his mind"

Hell yes, bring on more Indiana Jones.

Crystal Skull was awesome, and on par with Temple of Doom, but not as good as Raiders or Last Crusade.

Although it was probably thrown out there with a list of other potential issues, the notion of Shia "taking over" the Indi flicks is ridiculous.

As for another movie - hey, they already broke the seal with 4, might as well go out better than Crystal Skull: spend less time "perfecting" and just kick some ass. Give us another TOD, just a good time at the pictures.

first of all..

make shit more practical this time around. the only part in crystal skull that felt like an indy movie was the motorcycle chase scene. ignore cgi and go old school on our asses.

second of all, BRING SHORT ROUND BACK ALREADY!

I hate the 3rd act of The Kingdom of Skull but after a couple of viewings, the movie itself isn't that bad - just not as good as I was at first expected. Besides, my favorite role of Ford is Indiana Jones. Happy to see the 5th. This time we have "nuke the fridge". Wondering what they can nuke in the 5th, hehe.

Indy 4 is only awesome if you're high. Any other time, I have a syringe filled with air next to me in a case with a glass front that says (break glass if you start to think Indy 4 is a good movie).

I would love to see another Indy, but with some grounded story line to it. (climbing a broken rope ladder to escape man eating alligators-yes; swinging from vine to vine with monkeys at the same speed as a high speed car chase-no) I don't think steve would want another mess like indy 4, so I

I realize I'm in the vast minority, but I've grown to like Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Is the weakest in the franchise? Sure, but it's still Indiana.

Sean Connery made The Rock when he was 66. I believe Harrison Ford can still wear the hat at 67. If they set this movie back a few years and bring back Henry Jones Senior, Sahla, and Marcus Brody's Son, and that would help. Also, get a biblical mcguffin. I didn't love Crystal Skull, but more Indy can't hurt.

Sallah definitely needs to be back. Still not sure why he wasn't in Crystal Skull. Doubt Connery would come back though.

Indiana Jones and the Quest for the Apple Sauce

Unless they put him in a bionic exo-suit, I won't buy into any of the action sequences.

Indy deserves a better last film than part 4.

Bring on part 5, and do it right this time. No more silly CGI and keep Indiana Jones in the spotlight this time.

yes... Yes... YES!!!

I sure hope this movie comes together before Ford gets too old. And I hope they learned from their mistakes in 4 (even though 4 was still pretty, preeeeetty good).

What don't people understand about Indiana Jones? There is no Indy without Harrison Ford. Nobody cares about the "Indy universe" without Ford in it. Shia Lebouf would just be running around trying to be like Indy getting into similiar adventures while he reaches for his gun like Indy did to shoot a sword wielding ninja (slight look into the camera)... COME ON!!

Indy dies when Harrison Ford is done doing them. That's it... there is no other way.

I'm pretty sure Connery won't be back since he was dead in KOTCS.

That's what I was thinking, but they can always do flashbacks... Hopefully, they won't resort to time travel, but after the last one, who knows!

Let's be honest here, what else has Ford got going on movie-wise? When was his last hit? Air Force One? Of course he's going to put the Fedora back on for the paycheck. I'll be skipping this Indy adventure this time. Especially if Lucas is writing the script again.

Uhhh... Lucas has never written an Indy script. And I doubt very much he's writing this one. He's just story guy.

Story-guy, smory-guy, he still has final say over the script, and we all know after the last four movies the guy has been involved in that he wouldn't know a good script if it came up, unzipped his pants, and rubbed his sterile penis raw.

Not sure sure about that extra tidbit

I remember watching the making of features on the box set and Spielberg said that Tom Selleck was their fist choice, but the terms of his Magnum P.I. contract prevented him from accepting. He really made it sound like Harrison Ford was their backup choice from the get go, though. He certainly didn't mention any of those other actors at all.

Then again, he could've been leaving out some of the details for the sake of brevity.

I could also be wrong, but I'm fairly certain the extra tidbit isn't true. Based on the DVD box set and the extensive making of book which goes into even greater detail about casting, I don't think the role of Jones was offered to anyone but Selleck and then Ford. In fact, there is a list in that book of people considered and I'm not even sure any of those people are on that list. I'm not saying you made it up, I just think you should triple check yer source.

I was thinking the same thing. It's probably more like they all tried out for the role and didn't make the cut.

I was thinking the same thing. Speilberg said his first choice for Indy was Ford. But Lucas initially shot that down because he didn't want to be like Scorsese and use the same actor in all his movies. But after Tom Selleck couldn't do it Spielberg went back to Ford and Lucas gave in. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and myself are agreed on what the fifth adventure will concern, and "GEORGE IS ACTIVELY AT WORK."

Crystal Skull

I had no problems with LaBeauf as a "sidekick" or anything (Short Round was far more irritating). The movie itself sucked. If they get a better script, I'm all for it. Let's not kid ourselves, though -- the only reason Ford took on KOCS was because he hadn't had a hit in years, so his concerns with quality are false.

These type of movies always entertain me so bring it on

and i doubt that mutt would ever take over and wed see him starring in indiana jones 6/7, itd probably be his own spin off film series. shia can probably do a film series that doesnt involve giant robots pretty well, so im not too worried about him starring in his own "son of jones" series someday.
