Former ER actress Ming-Na Wen to co-star in Joss Whedons SHIELD series for Marvel

Oct. 24, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Ming Na-Wen, best known for her roles on the shows ER, Stargate Universe, and Eureka, has signed on to co-star with Clark Gregg on Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series for Marvel. The actress will play Agent Melinda May, who is described as:

Soulful and slightly damaged by her combat experiences, Melinda is an ace pilot, a weapons expert and a soldier who can — and has — gone beyond the call of duty.

Whedon is co-writing the pilot with his brother, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen with Marvel’s TV’s Jeph Loeb joining them as executive producer. From the pages (and screen) of THE AVENGERS, Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. is based on the long-existing spy and peacekeeping agency that engages supervillain threats from all over the world.

So, that’s two castmembers down, with no word on how many more will be added, but one thing is for sure; with those already involved this is sure to be one of the hottest shows to hit TV when it debuts, likely sometime in 2013-14 on ABC.

Extra Tidbit: Ming-Na Wen also voiced Mulan in both Disney films

Hey All...

read somewhere that Agent Coulson would be in the new show? What gives? Typical comic book death and resurrection?

These are my concerns with a Shield series:

1) I just don't understand American TV Executives - they seem to make decisions at whim - will this series last more than one season (and is this why shows seem to have very short first seasons now?)? Whedon's last two shows were not given a chance. I never saw Firefly (though I have the box set sitting on my bookshelf, still shrinked wrapped for the best part of two years) and Doll House but by all accounts they were good. I have seen

I have seen Serenity and loved it - had all the Whedon hallmarks!

2) Will this be a Shield prequel. The Son of Coul being in it might suggest so (I prefer that to the idea of him coming back from the dead). If not, will it tie in to the movies? If it's cancelled...will that affect the direction the movies are going in?

3) I guess we'll see no A list heros or villains in this show. If not, how can this tie in to the movies which again suggest they might go the prequel route.

4) Perhaps Im confused over nothing - have they already said this is a prequel and I missed it?

5) Can they actually call the show Shield isnt there another show with that name?

Sure, I worry too much about these things...but what can I do...it's who I am.

She's still hot ! I think she recently played a judge on two and half men and damn, she was looking good. Now all we need is Summer Glau, do it Joss!

Where the heck has she been? I used to be a big fan, kind of forgot about her. Still a good looking woman. This is good casting.

Yes, I'm all for more Asian stars on American TV! She was also Chun Li in the Street Fighter film with van Damme, if I'm not wrong, and the voice of Detective Ellen Yin in 'The Batman'. Great addition to the cast!

Mulan was awesome.

Seriously, it was. The animation style was really good, right up there with Emperor's New Groove for me.

Oh yeah, the Avengers thing should be pretty good too.
