Fox and Marvel swapped characters between Guardians 2 and Deadpool

So there's been a lot of bad blood between FOX and Marvel, what with FOX holding onto the FANTASTIC FOUR and X-MEN rights to dear life. Many fans (and Marvel, I assume) I'm sure are hoping that one day FOX will finally give them up and let Marvel give everyone a proper version. Hell, no one thought Sony would cough up SPIDER-MAN, and look what happened! We've already seen a definitive Spider-Man in CIVIL WAR, who'll also be getting his own film next summer to the profit of both Marvel and Sony. Why, fanboys cry, can't FOX just do the same and just share?

Well, funny enough, that has already happened! Apparently, according to co-screenwriter of FOX's DEADPOOL Paul Wernick, they had to ask Marvel if they could change Negasonic Teenage Warhead's power (chosen because everyone loved the name) from being a psychic to shooting explosive blasts. Marvel agreed with the change, under one condition: that FOX let them use Ego the Living Planet for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2. This was corroborated by James Gunn himself on his Facebook page, where he expanded on the situation:

When I first pitched Ego as Quill’s father, I THOUGHT we owned the character. After I had worked out a very elaborate story with Ego the Living Planet as a very important part of the Marvel cosmic universe, I learned that we actually didn’t own the character. I had no back up plan, and it would be nearly impossible to just drop another character in. Thank God Fox came to us and wanted to make a trade.

This is an awesome story! And, who knows, maybe in a few years we'll see more of this kind of sharing. Hell, maybe FANTASTIC FOUR will finally be in the MCU? The mind reels.

DEADPOOL is already out on Blu-Ray/DVD while the sequel will break the fourth wall again January 12th, 2018. Meanwhile GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 will blast into theaters May 5, 2017

Extra Tidbit: Peter Quill's real father is just some space emperor named J'son of Spartax, and not in fact Ego.

Sony did not give Marvel back Spider-Man. They made a deal to allow their films to share a universe. Marvel's take on Spider-Man was fun, but now it's Sony's turn to run with the character. We are going to have wait until the movie to see what Sony does with it. They've already fucked the character over twice, rebooted twice, in the past ten years. There is no reason to call this the definitive Spider-Man before seeing one film starring Spider-Man under Sony's direction.

That's actually not true. While Sony retains the rights to distribute the Spider-Man solo films, they are being co-produced by both Marvel and Sony, with creative oversight by Kevin Feige himself. Spider-Man: Homecoming will effectively be a Sony movie in name only.

Something about this doesn't ring true. Since when does Marvel have creative control over X-Men movies?

Oh, and P.S. - Spoiler Alert.
I know that Ego/Father news may have broken out a while ago, but I had already gone this long without hearing it. Thanks for the heads up.
I suppose the rest of that news is cool, though.

The real question is when will WB and Disney make a deal to get a DC vs Marvel movie happening. I say in about 20 years. By that time the comic book movie craze will have died down and they will need some stunt to keep people interested.

Let's wait to see the Spider-Man movie before we annoint it...

Plus, the first two Raimi/Spider Man movies were great. It will be hard to top those.
But Marvel has released their share of duds. The Thor movies are nothing more than average, same with Avengers 2, Iron Man 2 and 3, the firs Captain America, Incredible Hulk, Ant Man and Civil War (I'm sure I'll get hate for the Civil War comment). I know there's an intense love affair that most people have with Marvel, but imo rarely do their films ascend to anything more than "That was an OK way to kill

I'm hoping not too long in the future Fox and Marvel will come to an agreement in sharing FF team with MCU (or just give up the rights all together, its not like we'll see another FF film very soon) maybe some parts of X-Men-verse too, and after Phase Four Marvel can do something along the line of the recent Secret Wars storyline (where Reed Richards and Doom were VERY important), which will then make kind of a soft reboot of the universe, while still building onward from the same continuity of

That will give Marvel a chance in casting younger new actors to the roles (let's face it, after four long phases new cast is inevitable), going to newer directions and also without bogging down too much with massive continuity issues (which happened way too much in the comics for the last ten years or so).

I would rather Marvel have the Fantastic Four rights back before the X-Men. Would love to see Dr Doom and Galatacus be involved with Phase Four of Marvel's plans.
