Fox announces title for Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel and release dates for First Class sequel, Robopocalypse and more!

05.31.2012

20th Century Fox has officially titled the sequel to RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. The Scott Z. Burns (CONTAGION) scripted sequel will now be known as DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. An appropriate name considering the plot elements in the first film. They also locked in the release date as May 23, 2014.

In other release date news, the still untitled sequel to X-MEN: FIRST CLASS will be released on July 18. 2014. Steven Spielberg's ROBOPOCALYPSE will be changing release dates, moving from July 3, 2013 to April 25, 2014. Seeing as we have not heard much movement on ROBOPOCALYPSE, that is the likely reason for moving it. But, what will take it's place over the Fourth of July weekend in 2013?

Fox also announced their plans to convert INDEPENDENCE DAY (ID4, for the cool kids) into 3D for release in theaters on July 3, 2013. I am trying to roll my eyes at this news, but I loved INDEPENDENCE DAY when I saw it when it first came out in 1996. Granted, I was fifteen, but it was still an awesome movie at the time. I doubt I will shell out to see it in 3D, but at least Fox has the right idea and are converting more than four weeks before they plan to release it (ahem, Paramount).

Extra Tidbit: That speech still gives me goosebumps.

Re: Planet of the Apes
The title is ok, though I wish they use some other words beside "Dawn" or "Rise". Maybe "Birth" or "Age" of the Planet of the Apes.

Re: ID4
I remember playing the ID4 Playstation game back then. Freakin' hard but fun to play.

Planet of the Apes Title

I don't understand the complaints regarding the titles for the recent films in this franchise. They may be long, but this is a common trait that exists throughout the films in this series, and the prequels are merely maintaining a consistency with those older entries:

Beneath the Planet of the Apes
Escape from the Planet of the Apes
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes
Battle for the Planet of the Apes

This has been a thread among all the movies in this franchise, and the recent movies
I don't understand the complaints regarding the titles for the recent films in this franchise. They may be long, but this is a common trait that exists throughout the films in this series, and the prequels are merely maintaining a consistency with those older entries:

Beneath the Planet of the Apes
Escape from the Planet of the Apes
Conquest of the Planet of the Apes
Battle for the Planet of the Apes

This has been a thread among all the movies in this franchise, and the recent movies are continuing that trend. The name of the series exists in every title in the same way that every Indiana Jones film starts with "Indiana Jones and the . . ." It's a trademark of all the movies, not just these.

Removing "Planet of" from the titles does not benefit it in any way other than to make it easier to say. Rise of the Planet of the Apes is not only about the ascension of the apes, but the decline of humanity leading to the rise of a planet ruled by apes, so the title fits. "Dawn of the Apes" makes even less sense, because the word "dawn" signifies the beginning, and apes have existed for a long time. This movie will be about the dawn of an earth that now belongs to the apes, a new civilization, so, again, the long title matches the film and follows the pattern of previous entries.

It's funny how we complain about long titles, but when studios shorten titles for unnecessary reasons (see: John Carter), we hear an equal outcry. Just as "of Mars" belonged in that title because of its role in the series on which it was based, the new installments of the Planet of the Apes series should follow the tradition established in past films. Taking out "Planet of" is just unnecessary. We as fans can call the movie whatever we want, but the studio should keep the titles consistent. There is no need for change.

I agree with your point - but come on man, you used repetition of your argument to turn 3 sentences and bullet list into a Russian novel.

Really liked Rise of the Planet of the Apes so I am very glad for this news on the next one. I don't really mind the title doesn't sound bad to me.

I'd rather see a sequel to Independance Day than a 3D version, but maybe this is their way to see if people are still interested in the film before making a sequel.

Bring on First Class 2! I can't wait.

I wonder what REAL film is going to jump to July 4th 2013? Maybe The Wolverine???

ID4

I wouldn't mind seeing ID4 on the big screen, but I'd rather see where they would've gone with the sequel, even though it's probably a bit late for that at this point. Still, I tend to think that half the reason for re-releasing it is to test the interest of audiences to see if the long-rumoured sequel is still viable.

Would have been better to name it Rise of the Apes, and this one should be titled Dawn of the apes. But at the same time it resembles George A. Romero's titles.

That's a crappy title.

It should only be Dawn Of The Apes like Rise should have been called Rise Of The Apes.

I would be interested to see what they could do with a First Class sequel since they kinda shot themselves in the foot by paralyzing Charles and having Magneto form the Brotherhood already.

I don't know what more they could do with Charles and Erik because X1 basically picks up where this one left off...And if they did a 'reluctant team-up against a greater threat' storyline, that would feel too much like a rehash of X2.

Not at all. One of the complaints they had for the first movie was that Scott and Jean were not in it. Well, they could have Scott, Jean and Storm in First Class part 2 because in X1 it was said that they were among Xavier's "first students". So having Beast, Banshee, Havok, Scott, Jean Storm and either Polaris or Dazzler (or both) would make First Class Part 2 different from both First Class and X2. You would just need another villain. People are asking for Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse for

People are asking for Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse for a second sequel and that's probably what we are going to see because the studios try to give fans what they want even if it means second guessing the director (cf Venom and Spiderman 3

To be honest (even tho I hate 3D) I will probably be seeing Independence Day in Theaters. I was too young to see it in 1995 and when I first saw it home on a VHS I wondered how cool it would be to experience this movie in theaters.

I liked First Class, but I have a hard time getting excited for a sequel. I'd prefer to get an X-Men movie with the classic x-men. There's going to be more x-men prequel movies than actual x-men movies.

Apes and First Class

Were both huge surprises, especially considering their ridiculously rushed production schedules and they were both coming off lousy previous movies. Now that the filmmakers have time, hope they can one-up themselves and really deliver some great stuff.
