Fox CEO says Buffy the Vampire Slayer is ripe for a reboot

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

20th Century Fox TV is getting a bit of a reputation for rebooting their old TV shows for the new generation. Take, for instance, PRISON BREAK, 24, THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO and, of course, THE X-FILES. But what about BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER?

Fox Chairman and CEO Gary Newman recently spoke about just that to Deadline and his answers are more than a little optimistic. That said, as you can imagine, the final decision to resurrect the series will always lie with creator Joss Whedon.

Fox Chairman and CEO Gary Newman:

[Buffy] is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back. It’s something we talk about frequently. Joss Whedon is one of the greatest creators we’ve ever worked for. When Joss decides it’s time, we’ll do it.

Newman then went on to talk a bit about reboots in general, which I don't know about you but I find particularly interesting; especially coming from such a high-ranking executive at such as a prestigious studio.

Newman on reboots:

Reboots aren’t actually a focus for us. Most of the time it starts with a creator coming in. Admittedly, we chased The X-Files for a while. But when we first brought it back it was Chris and David and Gillian. The 24 franchise… we’ll always want it.

In this world with nearly 500 scripted series, getting a leg up on marketing is an opportunity. If you do it cynically, if you don’t have a great creative reason to do it, I don’t think it’s going to work.

Interesting stuff all around, I say. What do you think? Make sure to hit us up and let us know how excited you are about the possibility of a BUFFY reboot in the comments below or on social media!

Synopsis:

Sarah Michelle Gellar takes on the role of Buffy Summers in this TV version of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," based on the film of the same title, which starred Kristy Swanson. Buffy is a Slayer, one in a long line of young women chosen for a specific mission: to seek out and destroy vampires, demons and other forces of darkness. Unlike her predecessors, Buffy establishes a group of supportive friends who aids her in her battles with evil, including Willow, Xander and Cordelia. Her battles with evil are frequent, since Sunnydale, where Buffy and friends live, sits atop a gateway to the realm of the demons.
