Fox is developing a Magic: The Gathering movie with Simon Kinberg

01.14.2014

So I don't know that much about the popular trading card game Magic: The Gathering. I played a Marvel version for a while in middle school, and my brother use to play quite a bit, but I'm really not that familiar with the game. It was just something I never got into. But a movie based on the game? That could be interesting.

THR has learned Fox has acquired the film rights for Magic: The Gathering, and Simon Kinberg has been tapped to produce. Kinberg is also building a comic book movie universe for Fox, and is working on a few other projects, so he's going to be one very busy dude. THR says Fox hopes to launch a new movie franchise with MAGIC: THE GATHERING, and they want it to be as big as the HARRY POTTER and LORD OF THE RINGS films.

A movie version of Magic: The Gathering could be great, however I think Fox is aiming a little too high by comparing it to HARRY POTTER and LORD OF THE RINGS. I know plenty of people still play Magic, and most people are probably aware of the game, but I don't think it has had the same mainstream success lately as the Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings books. I have the same feeling about Duncan Jones' WARCRAFT movie: most people probably know the name, but they don't know anything about the game.

Magic: The Gathering fans: do you want to see a movie based on your beloved game? Sound off below!

I could care...

This seems like a terrible idea to me, but to all the people who think Magic faded into obscurity, more people buy, and play now than ever have.

High potential...

MtG is STILL a very well played game, and has a HUGE amount to draw a script from. Hollywood (and especially Fox) always takes the easy way out: they'll go to the books for the meat of the script. Which books? The non-cycle books are out; too hard to get a sequel if it does well. So that leaves the cycle books and anthologies, but which? My guess they will go with Rath and Storm/Mercadian Masques. It has alot of things going for it: It's almost Avengers-esque with people and creatures of

It has monsters. It has colorful characters. It pulls the [link] strings. It's a medieval Avengers! Wonder who they'll cast for Gerrard and the others...

It's a very well played game? Can anyone tell me what the fuck that means? That everyone plays the game very well? That is one of the stupidest sentences I've ever read. Seriously, I cringed. Is anyone with me on branching off on a site where you have to submit just your high school diploma to become a member? Just a high school diploma? I'd rather watch the new Hercules movie then read comments like that...well, maybe that's a bit much

I think i've seen something similar...

its suffering from the same ordeal that The Simpsons movie suffered.

...Overly Delayed Launch Syndrome.

only the 2000's truly knows about this cards. pokemon came and went...this wouldve been a good investment then.

Skeptical..

I haven't read any of the MTG books (I'm told some are quite good though) so I would think there is plenty of material to adapt. The cards themselves even hint at a rich backstory with their flavor text. That being said, I'm just skeptical that this would turn out well. I didn't watch the D&D movie (heard it was godawful) but this could be almost as bad in the wrong hands. I would be hip to seeing what kind of team they put together on this but I can't get over thinking it will be

Oh, and to the guy who said that MTG had faded into obscurity 15yrs ago, this is from BuzzFEED Business, July 2013:
"Hasbro executives say Magic is the biggest brand in its $1.2 billion games portfolio, without drilling into specifics, and said in its annual report that 2012 marked Magicís fourth straight year growing revenue by 25% or more."

I'm with Netforce, Dungeons and Dragons was the first thing that popped into my head. Such a glorious misfire and Jeremy Irons at his hammy best.

I'm afraid it might end up like Dungeon & Dragons movie - so much potential but the actual movie turned out so bad. I hope this is not the case.

About 15 years too late...

MTG was popular in the early 1990's and faded into obscurity by around 2000. Sure it's still around but who plays it still? Pass.
