Fox pulls Fantastic Four sequel from its release schedule

11.24.2015

Fantastic Four Josh Trank Michael B. Jordan Miles Teller Kate Mara Banner

Although a couple of months FANTASTIC FOUR co-writer and producer Simon Kinberg said he was "really focused" on the sequel, it looks like Fox has pulled the planned film from its release schedule. The follow-up was originally set to hit theaters on June 9, 2017, however it was recently changed to "TBD" over at Box Office Mojo. WORLD WAR Z 2 is now the only movie currently scheduled to open on that date.

Fox hasn't officially announced that the sequel has been cancelled, but with FANTASTIC FOUR bombing with critics and at the box office, obviously the studio needs to figure out what the want to do next with Marvel's first family. I don't know if the studio will want to do another reboot with a new cast of actors playing the foursome, but some seem to think reintroducing the superhero team in a future X-Men flick before giving them another movie could be a good move. Besides giving the film rights back to Marvel (which I doubt is going to happen anytime soon), what do you think Fox should do with franchise?

FANTASTIC FOUR will arrive on Blu-ray and DVD on December 15th.

Fox

Really has no options, either do another movie or the rights go back to marvel. They arent able to just sit on the license and do nothing with it. This is how Marvel got Daredevil, Fox had a choice greenlight a F4 or greenlight a DD movie, they chose F4. I still think the rights going back to Marvel that was rumored a month or so ago is still true.Fox/Marvel just didnt want to officially announce it yet.

Fantastic. Now pull Simon Kinberg from your schedule and you'll right many future wrongs.

Fine by me.

When it ended, there was nothing that made me say "I want to see more of the 4 of them". Say what you want about the 2005 movie, but at least the 4 actors had a lot of chemistry with one another. That made me say "I wouldn't mind seeing them banter for another 90/100 minutes".

I could be misinterpreting something I read a while back, but I thought Fox doesn't actually have the right to merge FF with Xmen. Don't they just have the rights to each property independently? Trying to merge the two into one film would probably screw up/void their contracts... So, if that IS the case, Fox should totally go through with it so Marvel can get their properties back by default!

Just give it back to Marvel Fox. It's apparent you have no idea what you're doing with this property, with the past films or this recent one. Merging it with the X-Men would completely ruin any ounce of good work you've done with that franchise.

It's a matter of when and not if for the rights going back to Marvel. Hopefully Deadpool is successful enough to warrant a sequel.

This happens when ....

You change the characters relationship.... and when you neglect to do intensive research! A black dude for the sake to attract the black audience ... just dump --- I grew up in the hood, and guys don't go to the movies because there's a black dude or Hispanic ... we go to see great storytelling .... which there is none here!

I appreciate what you're trying to say here but I think you're off the mark dude. I don't think they cast Michael B. Jordan simply to attract black audiences. They know they don't need to do that. I seriously doubt anyone at Fox said "We're not making enough money because we're not getting the blacks to come out to our movies enough." What you said at the end is true in general: people go to the movies to see good storytelling (though I'd make it even more general and say they go to be

What you said at the end is true in general: people go to the movies to see good storytelling (though I'd make it even more general and say they go to be entertained but storytelling is definitely an element of that). However, representation of diversity in hollywood is a problem. The industry is criticized on it pretty regularly. The problem with Fantastic Four wasn't that MBJ was cast in it. The problem was that it was a shit movie.

I think it would be naive to say that they didn't cast Michael B. Jordan to attract black audiences. Probably not the only reason, but it's a major reason nonetheless.

No surprise, I think they only left it on the schedule to save face and also wait till they had something to throw in in it's place.
They've got time for another reboot now anyway.
As to Marvel. if they cared anything for the characters they'd have made the same offer they did for Sony with Spider-Man where the other company keeps ownership of the character and Marvel gets to use them.

Who said they haven't made that offer? The rivalry between Marvel and Fox escalated big time the last few years. Negotiations turning sour would explain why that happened.

It should go back to Marvel, but we all know that the piece of shits over at Fox will never do that. They'll released a crappy ass reboot just to keep the rights. Fox is actually hurting their numbers and wallet with making Fantastic Four. It would be in their best interest to never make a FF film again and just give the rights back to Marvel.

Good

Yes to sharing with Marvel.
No to merging with X-Men.
Whatever happens, if you try another please research Doom properly. This character could make your movie! Why are you so afraid of him?!?!?

Wait another 5-10 years

Tonally, that movie just looked bad from the jump. Fantastic Four has no business trying to go the "gritty dark" route, that works for Batman & other characters, but FF should be slick and retro, like an Incredibles style aesthetic

I honestly think they should reboot it again. No one saw the last attempt at FF, so it's not like it's super fresh in everyone's mind.
They need to bring in people from Marvel, or at least people familiar with the property to write the script. No offense to Simon Kinberg b/c he did an excellent job with X-Men, but he should not be allowed to work on this one. Make it something fresh by steering clear of the dark/gritty tone (just doesn't work for the property). Their best bet is to just

Their best bet is to just adapt the comics or at the very least keep the story simple to what these comics are all about: scientific discovery and adventure. The movies don't need to focus on someone trying to take over the world - with the exception of Dr. Doom they never encounter those kinds of stories outside of the massive Marvel crossovers.

I'm guessing instead of a sequel we'd get another reboot which probably deny the existence of this flopped reboot.

It's clear Fox has no idea how to handle Fantastic Four

The previous films made some money, but no one's looking back at them with any fondness. This last film looks like a bad combination of Josh Trank in over his head, and Fox's interference. If the hype around CREED is realized, then Michael B. Jordan will want to forget FANTASTIC FOUR ever happened - plus, he'll be too expensive.

Make a deal with Marvel/Disney, Fox. A piece of a hit is better than a whole lot of nothing.

What a bunch of whiny man-children. FOX is acting like it's going to be terrible, and is going to flop at the box office. FOX has no idea if a sequel will be good (the track record of those involved is pretty solid). I hope this is a hit, just to watch all of you people have a meltdown over a them making a sequel.
