Fox says they are still committed to Fantastic Four franchise

08.10.2015

Fantastic Four Josh Trank Jamie Bell Michael B. Jordan Kate Mara Miles Teller Banner

Sorry, Marvel Studio fans, but it doesn't sound like Fox is going to relinquish its rights to the Fantastic Four any time soon. The Josh Trank-directed reboot had an abysmal showing in its opening weekend and received extremely negative reviews from critics (you can read ours here), however Fox distribution chief Chris Aronson tells THR that the studio still wants to make more movies featuring Marvel's first family.

While we're disappointed, we remain committed to these characters and we have a lot to look forward to in our Marvel universe.

Aronson declined to comment on the sequel that is scheduled to open in June of 2017, but the rumor is the studio might be considering swapping out the FANTASTIC FOUR follow-up with a DEADPOOL sequel.

There's a lot of blame to go around for how bad FF turned out, both critically and financially. Trank's comments last week certainly didn't help though, and analysts believe his tweet may have cost the film as much as $10 million. Besides the obvious and likely most popular answer (selling/giving the rights back to Marvel), what do you think Fox should do with the Fantastic Four?

That a boy! What a way to persevere! Don't ever give up on a possible franchise when Hollywood is all out of new ideas, Hey, maybe third time's a charm.....Oh wait, this was a third time. Shit. Now he is just delusional. Do yourself a favor and give them back to Marvel, they know what they are doing.

Because it hasn't premiered internationally yet. The movie may still sell well overseas.

Fox has to be one of the most selfish studio in the business, they won't give up the rights to any of their comic book franchises, yet put out half ass movies at the same time. Sure they redeemed the X-Men & gave fans an R rated Deadpool, but at least Sony gave in & gave up most of the rights to Spider-Man. You have given fans 3 half-assed Fantastic Four movies, you gotta know when to throw in the towel FOX.

Speilberg or bust...

Could you imagine the absolute wonder and adventure he would bring the franchise like this? But you can't get him, so let it go. Unless you can... I'M ALLOWED TO DREAM OK!!

You can't salvage this.....

They could make the greatest sequel in the history of sequels and it would lose 1/4-1/3 of it's potential income immediately because people see these characters and this "universe" as a failure, no matter what the reviews and ad campaign say. It's a superhero movie, so it needs a budget in the mid to upper 100 million range just to be in the game.

They are better off leaving it for later or letting the rights go back to Marvel.

Those first 100 or so Jack Kirby issues is what I want to see on screen. I loved the mystery of those stories. Raiders of the Lost Ark is the correct template.

They should just make a fucking adaptation of the material. None of this bullshit about making it gritty and realistic. It's about 4 people who have crazy powers and do shit to save the planet from global destruction. I haven't seen FF, but from the plot description, I don't mind the change in going to an alternate dimension to get their powers. Keep that if you want or change it back to space exploration. But whatever they choose, they should go on a mission, get their powers and then

But whatever they choose, they should go on a mission, get their powers and then jump the story ahead a few years. The Fantastic Four are established, they run private science research out of the Baxter Building. And they take on missions to save the planet. They find out that Victor Von Doom, a member of their team where they go powers whom they thought were dead has re-emerged in Latveria and has slowly taken it over as a dictator. He's planning something to take over the world and the FF come to save the world. Make it colourful, make it out-there, make it humourous, get the characters right. And just have fun with it and stop over-thinking it. That's how you solve this problem.

Well... On the bright side... Maybe they can learn from the mistakes of the previous movie. We know Fox can make decent superhero movies with the right director. Even though that's only been proven with two directors (Matthew Vaughn and Bryan Singer). I'd much prefer Fox just gives up and works out a deal with Marvel, but if not then at least make more of an effort to give us something worthwhile...

I'm not too sure Fox will give these characters a fourth film now and are probably trying to play hardball as they're backed in to a corner with spikes coming out of it. They'll probably happily give it back to Marvel so long as they can get something out of it.

Posturing

That's all this is. They might try to reboot it again in a few years, but they won't make a direct sequel to this POS.

How about getting a director who respects the source material?

This FANTASTIC FOUR had several things wrong with it: a lousy script, a director who simply wasn't ready for prime time and a studio that didn't care enough the material to do it justice.

The worst part in all of this is that some talented actors are likely going to have their careers hurt by this movie. The cast deserved better.

Perhaps hiring a director after only his FIRST movie was a bad idea?

Josh Trank had only done Chronicle prior to directing F4.... perhaps he wasn't ready fir that much responsibility?
he's a rookie... so was Gareth Edwards...

Trank is such an idiot. Instead of tweeting how excited he is for Fant4stic, how proud he is of his product and his hard work, he immediately throws the studio under the bus over the bad reviews and pretty much confirming the movie sucks to anybody on the fence about seeing it in the theater. Honestly I would be surprised if any studio hires him for years to come.

Hey Fox, if you're just going to throw away another $150 million, can I barrow $5 bucks for lunch? McDonalds has some good deals going on right now and I'm a little tapped for cash.

Just give the rights back to Marvel. After the abysmal problems and box office of the first one, what makes them think doing a sequel would be a good idea? Or the fact that it would do any better (I mean this is Amazing Spider Man all over again). Would love to see the Avengers face off against Doom, Silver Surfer, and Galactus. And what better time to introduce all of them while building up to Infinity Wars.

I didn't see anything all that wrong...

with the 2005 & 2007 versions. The Thing needed to be re-tooled, wasn't big enough but like them or not
were still faithful to the source material...

Yeah, but they needed better scripts and Doom was still all wrong. More faithful though yes.

Keep the cast and try again. This time with people that know what they're doing. I mean you had the casts of all three movies round up for a selfie at SDCC. Would be ridiculous to begin recasting.

It's likely a business move. If they cave and give back the rights for Fantastic Four, it would undermine their negotiating ability if they ever wanted to do an X-Men crossover. They've probably only just realized (with Deadpool) that if they honor the source material that they're likely to make money. This Fantastic Four is to Fox what Green Lantern was to DC. Their learning curve for how serious / original / faithful to be to the comics. Although, they should've learned this with X-Men

Your argument doesn't really work. The xmen movies stick very little to the source but make decent box office returns. I mean the last one took the name of a story and changed a hell of alot but no one noticed or complained about that so no wonder they went this way with FF.

Any Chance they are bluffing?

I mean, wasn't Sony committed to their Spider-Man franchise even after the sequel to the reboot stumbled in its opening and got terrible reviews? It took them weeks to reconsider and shelve everything. If FOX is truly serious about this, then they are incredibly stupid and we will continue to laugh at audiences refusing their product.

You fumbled the ball big time, Fox. Get a director who actually cares about the story and characters rather than revamp its entire existence. Directors like Jon Favreau and The Russo Brothers. Better yet, give the rights back to Marvel. Fantastic Four is their properties in the first place. I'm sure they know what to do with it.

Get a director that actually gives a sh!t about the source material. I'm down for an original story and all but let your actors get into the comics so they know about their characters background and history. Don't try and make it so original that its only the FF by name. Or the obvious answer give the rights back to Marvel / Disney already, I'm tired of Fox's version's of the FF. One last note to add, this is of course my own opinion, and I know this will not be shared by everyone here, but

Awful news

Other than giving Marvel the rights back, there's nothing to be done here. Fox had plenty of chances to make a good FF movie and they didn't. If anyone at the studio truly cared about the property, the latest abomination wouldn't have happened.
