Fox wants James Cameron and Sam Worthington to make a huge sci-fi movie that isn't an Avatar sequel

Jun. 14, 2011by:

After the box office domination of AVATAR, it's no surprise Fox wants another sci-fi epic.

Who better to chase than Sam Worthington and James Cameron, two of the guys who made the reigning moneymaking movie? How about another ticket-selling machine, TRANSFORMERS producer Lorenzo di Boniventura?

Not enough? Then how about... um, Will Staples, a writer on the CALL OF DUTY video games?

Apparently Staples has an idea called MYTH that the studio and (presumably) the filmmakers went bonkers for. In fact, it's so juicy that nobody can talk about it -- Heat Vision says "Nothing is known about MYTH other than it’s big, it’s sci-fi, and it’s got lots of action."

So how did Staples (who also has several scripts in circulation) draw the attention of such top-shelf talent? We could make the leap that he and Worthington got chummy on the recent CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS, in which the actor voiced the lead character.

If or when MYTH would actually happen with these people (UPDATE: they are all only attached in producer capacities at this stage) is the biggest question -- Cameron and Worthington will most likely be on (or around) Pandora for the next few years making AVATAR sequels, and the director could move on to BATTLE ANGEL after that.

Extra Tidbit: Worthington obviously has his eye to the sky -- he's also been attached to an untitled space war movie, a sci-fi version of fictional hunter Allan Quatermain, and an adaptation of spacefaring comic hero Dan Dare. Guy loves him some outer space.

This is pretty pathetic, Mr. 'Blo

JoBlo seems to have come under attack recently for being a bit more, dare I say, "tabloidish" and inundated with advertisements and spam links in front of videos -- and I've defended the site through all of this -- but repeatedly witnessing articles like this is stifling my faith. Something like this is not just distorting a soft story; it's creating a headline -- it's poor journalism and you guys need to kinda re-evaluate what you're doing here, in my opinion. The article you link to CLEARLY

Something like this is not just distorting a soft story; it's creating a headline -- it's poor journalism and you guys need to kinda re-evaluate what you're doing here, in my opinion. The article you link to CLEARLY states that Cameron will NOT direct the film, yet your article implies otherwise; and, as of now, there is nothing to imply that Worthington would even star in the film (he's attached, tentatively, as a mere producer). Do you see how embarrassing this is for you?

I say this with much love and only constructive criticism, because I love the site. But please get better soon, because you've been in the doldrums lately. Much love.

This article is super biased as well. Not just saying that as somebody who loved Avatar...

For the record, Heat Vision's original article did NOT state their roles, only that they were "attached". They have updated their article since my post. As to the rest of your criticisms, I guess you're entitled to your opinion.

Dave adequately defended his story below (the original details from which he wrote up this article didn't clarify the involvement of either Cameron or Worthington and the source article, as well as this report, have since been updated), so let's address your other point(s).

What do you find "tabloidish" about the site? We, as we always have, run the occasional side story that we consider "fun." We're not alone amongst movie web sites in doing this. If you're looking for just posters,

If you're looking for just posters, trailers and casting blurbs, may I recommend Yahoo! Movies? We hope that you come to JoBlo.com (and continue coming back) for a little bit of personality, irreverence and levity with your entertainment news.

As for reports of "spam links" in front of videos, I'm not sure what you're referring to but, yes, we do have advertisements before our videos. They, like the banner ads on the site, help pay for all this free content you see. I believe we have a talented and experienced staff and they deserve to be compensated for their hard work and advertising revenue is how we're able to do that.

I realize there have been some technical issues with ads on the site in the past week or so and we've addressed that with our provider. They've assured us it won't happen again so I encourage anyone who's having repeated issues with advertisements interfering with their enjoyment of the site to send either Berge or me an e-mail with your specific complaint. (Also ad-blocking software is free and quite helpful.)

If you have issue with an article here or an article there, I hope you can continue to find plenty of other fresh, original and interested content across the JoBlo.com network. Jim Law has a brand new 10 Spot up today and Jason Adams has a special "live" version of Awfully Good running on the Digital Dorm.

If you, FilmAddict, or any other readers have any questions or concerns about the site, its staff or our content, my e-mail door is always open.

@Mike: my comments came across way "bitchier" than I intended. I suppose that's one of the ill effects of alcohol consumption. I didn't intend to insult you or the staff -- I was just in kind of a pissy mood and chose to rant about something rather trivial. I do stand by my comments that some of the content across this site has changed a bit (and not for the better) lately but I appreciate the reply and respect that.

With all the money he's making... maybe Sam can afford to buy some charisma.

too bad

the writing in Call of Duty is horrible.

I mean really, out of all the brilliantly written video games with wonderful stories... you instead pick Call of Duty's writer? Wow.

however ;)

I'm interested in the project, simply because I have faith in Cameron and faith that he'll do as many rewrites or changes as he needs to make it into a great film.

The only thing I'm a bit confused about, even though I really do like the guy as an actor, is the Sam Worthington choice... I'm not against it at all but it just seems a bit weird that they're like 'must haves: James Cameron, Sam Worthington'.

James Cameron is undeniably a master director and movie maker. What ends up on screen is always vivid, engrossing, and brilliantly paced. But he's a bad writer who makes amateurish story-telling decisions. He should avoid dialog altogether and allow someone else to help him come up with stories to tell.

That's funny that you say he sucks at dialog considering he is responsible for some of the most memorable & quoted dialog in movie history.

I was hoping this was about a terminator sequel. Also, do a lot of people really want an Avatar seqeul? I know it'll make money, and I enjoyed the first one to an extent, but aside from giving Cameron another chance to shove 3D down people's throats I'm not sure what we need a sequel for.

So in other words...

it's going to fuck suck. Whenever nobody tells us about movies it's because they don't know what the fuck it's about yet and their figuring it out. And chances are it'll suck. Avatar yeah it was awesome the 2 times I saw in theaters, it did 3D a real number. The first REAL 3D movie. but look what it did it created an unstoppable wave of shitty 3D movies to follow. I saw some good ones. But Avatar seeing it again on TV was shit and seeing it on every damn channel is annoying. It manage to rip

It became a mess. I say if this movie happens. DO REAL action, no 3D, and make a really good plot. Please.

This won't happen.
But hats off to JoBlo for getting a few extra hits piggybacking on Cameron's name in the article title.
