Fraggle Rock is still in the works, will feature music from Scissor Sisters' Jake Shears and Babydaddy

Jun. 14, 2011by: George Merchan

It's been nearly a year since we last reported on the feature film version of FRAGGLE ROCK. Director Cory Edwards (HOODWINKED!) went on a very understandable rant last June, upset about the fact that super producer siblings the Weinsteins felt his FRAGGLE ROCK script wasn't quite "edgy" enough.

The future of the project was then called into question as Edwards had the following to say on his website a few months ago:

"Many, many, many of you have repeatedly asked for some kind of update on the Fraggle Rock movie. The truth is, I got nothin. Theres nothing to report except that The Weinstein Company has everything they need to move forward, and the ball is in their court. Theyve talked about getting a new writer, which Im willing to do. Theyve talked about starting over from scratch, which Im willing to do. But I have not heard a peep from their camp in almost a year. I completely sympathize with all of you that are waiting for a movie, but lets all remember that the next best thing to making a Fraggle movie is avoiding making a BAD ONE. So at least were doing that. Until something new happens to awaken the project from its deep coma, we can at least enjoy the untainted TV series on DVD and The Hub Network."

It appears now, though, that FRAGGLE ROCK has finally awaken from that coma, perhaps even with that "edge" the Weinsteins so desperately wanted. According to Music Week, the film is back in the works, featuring a fresh new deal with Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears and guitarist Babydaddy, both of whom have been brought in to work on the soundtrack for the developing feature. About that "edge" again: the Scissor Sisters are a glam rock band that, according to Wikipedia, were "spawned by the scuzzy, gay nightlife scene of New York" and "who took their name from a sexual position between two women." Scissor me timbers!

Odd as that all may sound, the Scissor Sisters and the Jim Henson team have actually worked together before. According to Celluloid & Cigarette Burns, the puppeteering maestros created stage creatures for the band's live performances some years back. You can see some of that below.

Extra Tidbit: At one point back in late 2006, Ahmet Zappa - younger brother of guitarist Frank Zappa - was commissioned by The Jim Henson Company to develop FRAGGLE ROCK.

The Trash Heap has Spoken!

not sure if I trust the guy who did Hoodwinked to direct this. It's not that I hated Hoodwinked, it's just that it was pretty mediocre to me. Did he have anything to do with the new one? The trailer for that just screamed of direct to dvd, so I have no idea how it made it to the theaters.

I'm not sure this show can be pulled out of the 80s. The charm was in the production.
