Frank Darabont, Frank Marshall deny Indiana Jones reboot rumors

Mar. 28, 2014by:

A couple of days ago, the Internet raged against the prospect of an INDIANA JONES reboot, possibly with Bradley Cooper in the lead. While we will eventually be reaching the inevitable point of the famous archeaologist character needing to be retired completely if not recast, Harrison Ford has already expressed his desire to don the fedora at least once more. Well, it looks like we have some news from those involved with INDIANA JONES who want to clarify these rumors.

First up is Frank Darabont, longtime friend and associate of George Lucas, who wrote several entries in the YOUNG INDIANA JONES CHRONICLES television series as well as an early draft of INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL. The reboot rumor listed Darabont as a potential scripter for the fifth film to which he offered this response via Ain't It Cool News:

This is an internet rumor with not a shred of truth in it. I have not pitched an idea for a proposed Indiana Jones movie, nor has anybody approached me with such an idea. The inaccurate report on Latino Review was the first Id heard of it.

While that sounds pretty definitive, producer Frank Marshall refused to dignify the rumors calling them "ridiculous" and "agent pipe dreams". Marshall also said he will not comment further until there is real news to acknowledge. He did confirm one bit of casting for us:

INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL premiered almost 6 years ago and did show the wear and tear on the Lucasfilm franchise. But, much like how STAR WARS is receiving an influx of support since the Disney buyout, INDIANA JONES could easily benefit from the same. While Harrison Ford is still presumably locked in for the new trilogy of STAR WARS movies in some capacity, I wouldn't hold my breath to see him portray Dr. Jones again any time soon.

I don't think we'll see another Indy film with Harrison at this point. Too much time has passed and is passing with everyday they don't get this film into production.

He's going to be real embarrassed when Katy Perry is in fact cast as the new Indiana Jones.

Nah. They'll cast Michael B Jordan instead, pissing everyone off in the process.

This is a very tricky situation because we can't picture ANYONE else as the Indy we love beside Ford....but like the article says recasting is inevitable. It would take some getting used to seeing someone else as Indy but there are so many possibilities to explore. What if they still have Ford as an old Indy looking back on his past? Sort of how Old Bilbo book ends the Hobbit, but done much better and with much more purpose! It could really work to at least kick start a new series of films with

Neeson is 62yrs old and Ford is 72yrs old. I think the point of a reboot is going with someone younger, and although technically Neeson is younger, he's not that much younger. In 3 years he'll be a senior citizen.

Come on guys christ are we forever gonna be hung up on 'Indy will be forever Harrison Ford' - if there is room for a story and a decent flick comes out of it then recast and move on, it's the same will all these wieners moaning about ghostbusters stop living in the past and if the right person or people are there then just do it. I find it amazing how TASM rebooted after just a few years and we all love Garfield yet Indy 4 showed us Ford is well, well past it. I do think Bradley Cooper would

I do think Bradley Cooper would make for a great Indy and having him carry his own film series is just what he deserves. Recasting is fine - people move on anyone seen James Bond flicks from time to time ???

This is @ The Soloist..."I wouldn't want to see Bradley Cooper play Indiana Jones in a rebooted franchise. He's too good for it and the material is beneath him at this point in his career." What an asinine thing to say, he's above Indiana Jones??? GTFO...

Whoa, what do you mean we all love Garfield? I thought TASM was terrible, and I did care for Garfield at all. A lot of people didn't.

I'm not saying Cooper would do a bad job. He would be fine, and has all the right characteristics and qualities for the role, but I I just think he's too great of an actor to be spending him time on this.

I could see maybe Chris Pine or Jensen Ackles doing a good job as the new Indy. Or even Ackles as the lead in a Uncharted film.

I just think Cooper has the same charm and ruggedness Ford had, there must be loads if great story lines out there for a good Indy set of films. If not Cooper who else ?

don't reboot, continue.

Indy 6 starts with Indy waking up in bed. Marian Ravenwood has been dead for years. their son and the aliens were all a horrible nightmare.

But he is getting just as old, he would have to be recast after one film.

Fact: Disney Loves Money
Fact: Disney paid $4 Billion for all LucasFilm properties including Indiana Jones
Fact: Crystal Skull, however terrible, made over $750 million in global box office.

It might not be until after Star Wars VII has been in theaters, but rest assured: There will be more Indiana Jones movies, with or without Harrison Ford.
