Frank Darabont will direct The Huntsman; release date and cast announced

07.31.2014

Late last month we learned that Frank Darabont was in talks to direct THE SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN sequel. It has now been made official as Universal released an official press release which confirms Darabont and announced the new title: THE HUNTSMAN. Darabont also wrote the current draft of the screenplay which will in fact be a prequel to the first film with some returning cast members.

The fantastical world of 2012’s global hit SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN expands to reveal how the fates of two characters, The Huntsman Eric and Ravenna, intersected before they met Snow White. Chris Hemsworth and Oscar® winner Charlize Theron return to their roles in a new epic action-adventure, THE HUNTSMAN. Three-time Oscar® nominee Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile) directs and wrote the current draft of the screenplay, with earlier drafts by Craig Mazin and Evan Spiliotopoulos. Producer Joe Roth (Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland) once again leads the team in a breathtaking new tale from the legendary saga.

They also announced the release date of April 22nd, 2016 for the movie. This pushes Alex Kurtzman's present-day adaptation of THE MUMMY to June 24, 2016. While I had no interest in a movie based on THE HUNTSMAN character, I’m definitely more open and interested to the idea now that Darabont seems to have immersed himself in the project. Maybe he see’s potential in this story after all.

All in favour of a Charlize Theron leading prequel instead?

Fed up with prequels ! I'll avoid it. Darabond deserves better.

Seems like out-of-left-field choice for a director, but Frank Darabont is a damn good one, so consider my interest piqued.

It's a good Thor fix inbetween Thor movies.

I enjoyed the first one a lot more than most it seems around here. I watched Mirror Mirror shortly before seeing SW & The Huntsman so that might have made it seem better than it was, but I remember it being one of the best big budget fantasy movies in the last decade that wasn't LOTR related. So I'm down for more, and I'm a big fan of the director who seems to be really hands on with this project ;)

Darabont selected the best parts of the last movie

and got rid of Kristen Stewart's character - a plus in my book. Darabont's a freakin' genius so I'm interested to see what he creates here.

Well, they were the two very best parts of the film, so why not?

Hard to imagine a more unnecessary prequel in recent years. I like the actors and Darabont, but nothing about this story interests me, and I doubt it will interest anyone else.

OK, but... who is gonna care about a film where we KNOW both the good and bad guy survive?

I suppose it depends on whether they can create any new characters that we can invest in. Problem is, how obvious will it be that they're going to die? Lol.
