From Leprechauns to games Zach Lipovsky will direct the Dead Rising movie

LEPRECHAUN: ORIGINS director Zach Lipovsky is ready for his next project, a DEAD RISING movie based on the Capcom survival horror video game series. It’s definitely sounds like a step up from the WWE produced bargain bin fare as this one is being produced by Legendary Pictures' new Legendary Digital Media division and TRANSFORMERS producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura.

Here is the official description from Capcom:

Dead Rising follows the harrowing tale of Frank West, a freelance photojournalist after the scoop of a lifetime. In a small suburban town that’s overrun by zombies, he escapes to the local shopping mall, thinking it will be safe. Now it’s a standoff, with zombies unable to get Frank, but him unable to get out & escape. Fortunately, he’s got an entire mall at his disposal. Utilize everything you can find to fight off the flesh-hungry mob and search for the truth behind the horrendous epidemic.

The script was written by Tim Carter who penned the great Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series. DEAD RISING will premier as a 90-minute digital feature film exclusively on Crackle in the US and will later be distributed internationally and released on SVOD, DVD, VOD and TV. Considering the success of the game series I’m a little surprised it’s not getting a run in the theaters but I’m sure it will find its audience this way too. I only ever played the first game in the series and loved exploring the mall and killing zombies, talk about a great stress reliever. Perhaps part of the reason it’s not going to theaters is that it’s a little hard to differentiate a lot of these zombie/outbreak movies these days which all basically inspired the game in the first place.

Meanwhile, WWE Studios will release LEPRECHAUN: ORIGINS on VOD on August 26th, 2014.
