Funeral Gets Cast

It always thrills me when kings of comedy get together to make a film. One great comedian is awesome. But, three great comedians just take the f*cking cake. Last year it was reported that Chris Rock would remake the 2007 British film DEATH AT A FUNERAL with Neil LaBute directing. Well the black comedy just got a whole lot blacker with the casting of Tracy Morgan and Martin Lawrence. All you fans of “30 Rock” don’t need me to explain the comedic genius that is Tracy Morgan, but after a string of flops, Lawrence must prove to us that he can still bring the funny. Still, the man is a legend, and with a Rock-penned script coupled with LaBute’s biting sensibilities, this could be a return to form for the beleaguered star.

The film revolves around a dysfunctional family that gathers for the patriarch’s funeral. Things are bad enough with old conflicts flaring, and only get worse when a man arrives saying he’s the dead man’s gay lover and threatens blackmail. Danny Glover, Regina Hall, James Marsden, Zoe Saldana, Columbus Short, Loretta Devine and Ron Glass round out the cast. Chris Rock’s film career has never been quite as good as it could have been, so my fingers are crossed that this will be the long awaited classic that the legendary comedian deserves.
