Deadline is reporting that Gael Garcia Bernal has been cast in the title role of Jonas Cuaron's futuristic Zorro reboot Z. If you're getting some déjà vu, it's because the ROSEWATER and THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES actor was previously attached to play the masked swashbuckler back in 2012 when the project was still titled ZORRO REBORN. Cuaron and Bernal recently worked together on the upcoming drama/thriller DESIERTO.

In a statement, producer Mark Amin of Sobini Films said, "I have always loved Gael for this role. Zorro is a hero who is charming, witty and clever. Gael possesses all those characteristic and he’s able to deliver them with a modern spin to introduce the Zorro character to a new audience."

In addition to directing, Cuaron is also writing the script for Z, which is aiming for a fall production start date. What are your thoughts on Bernal as the new Zorro?

If his dna is any indication I'm sure the kid will do just fine directing. Plus, maybe his dad can give him a few on set pointers since he's already worked with Gael before.

I don't see him in the role. However, since the setting will be different, maybe the character's personality will change too.

Bernal is cool, but it's gonna take some impressive work to sell me on the Zorro of the future thing.

Gael Garcia Bernal is a fine choice, but to me, Banderas always will be THE Zorro.

Hahaha... Douglas Fairbanks, Tyrone Power and Guy Williams all win as Zorro for me, followed by Banderas and if course Anthony Hopkins brief cameo as old Zorro.

When I was a kid, I was watching the Zorro series with Guy Williams, but I found 1998's Mask of Zorro to be my defenitive favourite. Campbell's direction, Horner's music, and the cast: Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Anthony Hopkins, Stuart Wilson, and the very-very underrated Matt Letscher.
And Banderas shines in that role. He was born to play it. It's his best character. I know for some, it's the Mariachi, but for me, it's Zorro.

Banderas' best character is and will always be Puss in Boots.
Who talk exactly like Zorro. But with more attitude.
