Patty Jenkins had been hired, at the suggestion of star Natalie Portman, to direct Marvel's THOR 2. But as Jenkins and Marvel had continuing script discussions it became clear that Jenkins, who hasn't directed a film since 2003's MONSTER, was in over her head. So despite Portman's protests, Marvel and Jenkins parted ways and the search for a new director was on. Enter "Game of Thrones."

Marvel was looking at two directors who had been working on the popular HBO series - Alan Taylor and Brian Kirk. Well over the holidays, it was confirmed that Taylor has gotten the gig and will begin directing THOR 2 (which I'm sure will have a fancy subtitle) next year.

How happy that makes Portman, who was reportedly "furious" when Jenkins was fired, remains to be seen. It also remains to be seen whether Marvel gives a shit. Let's all be honest and admit that the Jane Foster storyline was the least interesting part of the original THOR. More Asgard please.

Another good question to ask regards who the villain will be in THOR 2. Loki will be the main villain in THE AVENGERS and audiences will likely need something fresh for the THOR sequel. Maybe Enchantress?

sounds good
I mean she hasnt directed a movie in 8 years and he is directing one of the best shows on TV, thats in the same wheel house of THOR. I love portman, but if she wasnt in the next one it wouldnt matter at all and would only save/make marvel more money

No offense to Natalie
There are plenty of actresses who would like to play Jane Foster if Natalie pulls out.

Monster was interesting, but if she wasn't up for the challenge then I'm glad they moved on. In comic movies (unless the story is about the love interest) the love interest is pretty expendable anyway. I doubt it would be a big loss if they focused more on Thor and less on Portman's character, though there should be some focus on her character.

Good News
good choice of director, i think experience with similar genre is important when making films, you need to know they can pull off the epic scale.

my choice of villain for thor 2 is the absorbing man!

THOR GOD OF THUNDER!
If Portman doesn't work out, I say they scratch the Jane Foster storyline and make Lady Sif the main love intrest.

I say if Portman gives them any shit about the new director, replace her with Alison Brie and be done with it.

Honestly, as much as I like Natalie Portman, this news about her interference with the choice of director is not doing her any favours. Who on earth does she think she is, the star? She phoned in her performance in Thor, any decent attractive actress could have replaced her. If this did get out of control, I would have been perfectly happy to see her dropped from the sequel entirely, she is in...

If this did get out of control, I would have been perfectly happy to see her dropped from the sequel entirely, she is in no way an essential part of it.

A HUGE upgrade over Jenkins IMO. Great news all the way around! Can't wait to see where they go from here.

Sounds good.
I am glad they are giving this guy a chance. I haven't seen any game of throne episodes but now I will. I am glad they are giving this to someone with a fresh outlook.
