Gangs of NY delayed
In another blow to the already troubled GANGS OF NEW YORK, Miramax has pushed the film's release back to fourth quarter 2002 from a planned summer release. The move comes in the wake of heavy layoffs at Miramax that saw approximately 15% of the workforce (primarily folks in the marketing/publicity department) pink-slipped. This is the latest in a long line of issues for Martin Scorcese's next film. GANGS was originally to open in December of 2001 to qualify for the Academy Awards. It became clear the film wouldn't be ready in time and it was delayed to an unspecified 2002 date. There has been much press lately about how Scorcese and Miramax head Harvey Weinstein battled over the film's length among other issues. No telling whether or not the film will continue to be tinkered with while waiting for release.
