Gareth Edwards' Star Wars film titled Rogue One; Ep. VIII hits in May 2017

03.12.2015

Starting this December, we're going to get 3 Star Wars films in less than two years, so buckle up! Just recently announced is that the Gareth Edwards (GODZILLA) spin-off has been given an official title: ROGUE ONE. The concept for the story came from John Knoll, the Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. The script, as previously reported, will be penned by Chris Weitz (CINDERELLA, ABOUT A BOY). No other plot points have been shared, except for the fact that Felicity Jones (THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING) has been the first official person to join the cast.

All speculation about the plot has previously pointed towards a group of bounty hunters. However, Rogue One is the callsign for the leader of Rogue Squadron, which is the elite starfighter group for the Rebel Alliance. Whether or not bounty hunters will be a factor, we'll have to wait and see. Also confirmed is that the Rian Johnson (LOOPER) written/directed STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII will be released in May of 2017, returning the "official" Star Wars movies to the month they usually open. Now how do you like them space apples?

Gareth Edwards' ROGUE ONE will start shooting this summer in London and will hit theaters on December 16, 2016.

This is a very, very good thing.

Frankly I think some spin off film trying to detail the adolescence of Han Solo or Boba Fett would have been dreadfully boring if not predictable.

This way we get entirely new movies with new characters whose fate we won't be entirely certain of. I'm really looking forward to this.

I'm amazed with the hiring of Rian Johnson for Episode VIII & Gareth Edwards directing Rogue One. Great choices!

I will say that this whole thing feels completely rushed, like a lame TV spin off. Which are usually not as good when being a spin off of a film. JJ warned Disney of rushing these projects and despite giving JJ more time, they seem to be way too eager to wanting to bank off of these films.

I will watch everything Star Wars related, but...

I NEED Disney to start building ASAP an entire Star Wars Theme Park in Orlando, at least the same size as Epcot Center... I don't want only a new ride, or an expansion to the existing area at Hollywood Studios, I am talking about a place where I can spend 10 full days and pretend I am living inside my favorite movies of all time!!

2016: Dawn Of Justice, Civil War, Alice In Wonderland 2 (ok, just me), Apocalypse,

I'm excited to see what the Rogue Squadron are up to after Battle of Endor in the newly established canon.

I like that they're giving Rogue Squadron their own movie.

I can see a lot of cool action going on in there. I guess a depiction of the squadron's formation is out since it would have to feature the younger Luke, Han and Leia, and I suspect Disney has quietly erased Denis Lawson's phone number from their files.

This news sounds cool. I find it odd that the studio made such a big deal about December being a good time to release Episode 7 instead of May like every other Star Wars movie, and now Episode 8 gets a May release date. My guess is this is probably to avoid conflicts with other Marvel, Pixar, or Disney animated films.

maybe both?

a group of bounty hunters trying to take out Rogue One? or maybe bounty hunters that become rogue squadron? given GotG, Suicide Squad, and Sinister Six, seems like a group of anti-heroes is pretty popular these days.

If the movie is indeed about Rogue Squadron, then I'll definitely like that more than a movie about bounty hunters.

Bounty hunters have been done to death the Star Wars EU. Hell, even in the canon movies they've been used a lot. It would be cool to see a movie focus on this elite squad. Hopefully we'll see the return of Wedge Antilles and Porkins.

GREAT NEWS INDEED

Also, since Dinsey is dying t get their money back, 4.5 billion, Iit all mans star wars galore for the next 10 years!!!!
IN CLOSING I think episode 9 should have been done by someone else ... in this manner, you have 3 diffetent directors with their own spin on each of them movies.

Episode 9 does not have a director. There were conflicting reports when Rian Johnson was announced in the summer, but Abrams confirmed in an interview last month that Johnson, as of now, is only writing and directing 8 and writing a treatment for 9. He may end up directing it, but nothing is official or announced.

It does sound like the spinoff is a Rogue Squadron movie. Which means lots of X-Wing space battles in 3D. I'm keeping my expectations low, since a movie like this could easily go into Wing Commander territory. But at least it sounds like they won't need to recast Han Solo with a younger actor, which was my main concern with this spinoff. Frankly, as long as they get 7, 8 and 9 right (and it looks like they will), I'm not too concerned about how good the spinoff movies are.
