Gary Oldman says "they've called" about him joining Star Wars: Episode VII

Feb. 6, 2014by:

Gary Oldman has starred in huge blockbuster movies like HARRY POTTER and Christopher Nolan's Batman movies (as well as the upcoming ROBOCOP AND PLANET OF THE APES), but will he be adding another giant franchise to his filmography? Like Star Wars, perhaps?

In an interview with Sky Movies, the actor was asked if there has been any interest in him joining STAR WARS: EPISODE VII. Of course Gary Oldman couldn't reveal too much, however he did say, "They've called." Oldman goes on to say, "I'm more cynical about it now. I'll believe it when I'm on the plane home. The deal isn't done. So yeah, they've inquired." In the interview Oldman also doesn't seem that sure about signing up for another big franchise.

Gary Oldman in the new Star Wars almost sounds too good to be true...which means he'll probably pass on the project or a deal won't get made. Seriously though, who here thinks Gary Oldman joining STAR WARS: EPISODE VII would be a bad thing? What I really want to know is what role he's being considered for. Obviously he'd make a fantastic Sith, but I also think he could be an excellent Jedi. We'll have to wait and see if Gary Oldman actually does sign on for STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, or if this will become another famous casting "What Ifs."

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII will be released on December 18th, 2015.

Gary Oldman in Star Wars would be as awesome as Gary Oldman starring as Jim Gordon in a Batman movie. It's that awesome. While many here thinks that he would make an excellent Sith Lord, which of course he would, I would much prefer him playing as someone important to the saga but not necessarily a Force user. Maybe as a prominent general of the Empire, maybe even as Grand Admiral Thrawn.

If he says no to Star Wars after being in this needless Robocop remake, he needs to rethink his agenda.

YES

PLEASE bring Scary Gary into the mix. Of all the casting possibilities and rumors floating around, this one excites me the most. Sith lord. No brainer.

Wow

Maybe he will play the ghost of Obi won. He could do that or any role for that matter.

Gary Oldman can be in anything and I'll go see it. So yea, I very much hope he joins the cast of Star Wars. Here's hoping it comes true.

All of that said, I think when dreaming up casting decisions for Star Wars, people need to start branching out beyond Jedi or Sith. Part of what made the original trilogy so appealing is that there were only two Jedi's in the whole story - Luke and Vader, I know Obi wan, Yoda, and the Emperor but aside from one movie each they didn't really do anything

Part of what made the original trilogy so appealing is that there were only two Jedi's in the whole story - Luke and Vader, I know Obi wan, Yoda, and the Emperor but aside from one movie each they didn't really do anything too Jedi-ish (well maybe Obi Wan as a force ghost counts). One of the reasons for me that the prequels weren't as good is because it was like Jedi overload the whole time. Everyone was a damn Jedi, they never fleshed out the universe beyond Jedi and Sith. So it would be cool if the in this new trilogy, they bring in more non-Jedi characters, have maybe 3-5 Jedi characters and reduce the rest of them to the background for fight scenes or something. And on that note, Gary Oldman would make an awesome military general on either the good or bad side of the conflict.

I also miss Oldman's wonderful combustible villains! I would love to see him in any capacity or species, he might be tired of being a villain for all I know. But whatever he might play hopefully he gets to explode in anger once in a while.

Gary Oldman is one of those rare actors who

elevates everyone around him - everyone brings their A-game when he's on set. Whatever role he's cast in, he'll be a huge asset to STAR WARS.

This is pure gold. Gary Oldman is great and everything he is in is better because of him.

I'd love to see him as a Sith lord, its been too long since he's done an all out villian, i'm starting to miss it and hope it comes true sooner or later.

It would amazing if he were to sign up for this, but until there's conformation that he has, I won't get too excited just yet. I mean I would love for him, Cumberbatch, Strong, Day Lewis, etc. all to sign up for something in this film since they have all been rumored, but I can't get excited because nothing, NOTHING has come of any of these rumors as of yet.

Dude. There is NO rumour here. Unlike Benedict and Strong and Day Lewis, who none have confirmed theyve been approached, Gary Oldman HAS been approached and he HAS confirmed that. Whether he is a successfull candidate and accepts the role is something entirely different.

I agree with what you mean. There are too many rumors, news, and general possibilities floating around. It's like as soon as the press gets wind of a British actor they're immediately "Maybe he'll be in Star Wars". It's hard to get excited about any of these possibilities when nothing is confirmed and nothing is being mentioned to fans other than production start dates and that JJ Abrams is still working really hard on pre-production.

Seems like a no brainer

Oldman has been in a lot of major franchises, but Star Wars could truly test his ability to be a chameleon. He could easily work as a Jedi, Sith, bounty hunter, imperial guard, wookie, etc. When the cast finally gets announced, I hope he and Cumberbatch are both featured in some capacity.

It could definitely work. But I feel like this trilogy will benefit from it's main cast being relative unknowns. I mean with the original trilogy Hamill, Ford, and Fisher weren't hugely popular stars. I think Ford got his audition because he was on the painting crew at Lucas' office and was asked to fill in for a table read. But look at how well that cast turned out, they didn't bring the baggage of an entire career with them (whether successful or unsuccessful). So if Oldman were to come

So if Oldman were to come on for the new Trilogy it would be cool to see him as either a standard villain like Grand Moff Tarkin or if he's a good guy have him be a lead general or a Lando Calrissian type character.

Adding Gary Oldman to the Star Wars series would be the best decision "they" could make.

You know what they should do to mix things up? Have DeHaan be the master and Oldman as his apprentice. Think about it.......

Gary Oldman in any movie is a must watch for me. He even makes TV ads worth watching. He was great in that Nokia N93 TV ad about six years ago.
